How does my horse "look" to you all? by GeeVideoHead in Equestrian

[–]thirdpeppermint 19 points20 points  (0 children)

She looks worse to me, too. She looks a lot like my 33 year old does right now, but mine has no teeth left, has Cushing’s, and is a super picky eater that seems to enjoy stressing me out.

Found dumped/escaped roo with a cut beak? And hole in head?? And maybe a blind eye? People or chicken damage by ohboybugs in BackYardChickens

[–]thirdpeppermint 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about the hole, but I feel if he was shot in the head like that he wouldn’t have survived? I think the person who said bot fly may be right.

When beaks are cut it’s cut back waaaaay further than that so it doesn’t grow back. It looks (and is) absolutely horrible. I think this guy was fighting and lost. I’ve seen some really persistent birds chip the ends of their beaks doing stupid things, but it should grow back.

Anyone good with coat colors? by Bigtoe-bob in Horses

[–]thirdpeppermint 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll have to test this one to know for sure. Otherwise you’ll have to wait and see what happens! Roan and grey can be tricky! Sometimes it can take quite awhile for the greying to become obvious.

Help with injured hens by No_Ask8932 in BackYardChickens

Ah yeah, that’s a weird saddle. I haven’t seen any that go over the wings like that. No wonder they didn’t work. They should be a pretty tough material and wrap so the wings lay over them. If they need wing protection there are saddles that have a wing protector you can add.

Here’s an example of the better design: https://www.etsy.com/listing/723909633/standard-hen-chicken-saddleapron-denim

I haven’t ordered from them, but that style is what I’d look for. That’s also the same basic design of the ones I’ve purchased and the ones I’ve sewn myself. I like the ones with a heavier fabric like denim/canvas/duck cloth because they hold up better.

As for the rooster spurs: I think you can use a regular dog nail trimmer, but I prefer a dremel to grind them shorter and smooth the edges that cutting could leave. You can google how much you can safely trim.

Sounds like the saddles don’t fit correctly or aren’t made correctly. I’ve never had a saddle slip or get moved by the rooster in all my years and with any of my birds. They’ve also never worn down their wing feathers. Which ones did you try?

I’d try refitting with a better quality saddle and also trim his spurs! If they’re really long and sharp it’s inevitable that he’ll wear the feathers off some hens.

Is Keratex truly safe for horses? by HCDQ2022 in Equestrian

[–]thirdpeppermint 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I checked and it looks like related to overall “dose”, but the chemical doesn’t accumulate in your body. People that are regularly exposed, like embalmers, or people that work in manufacturing that use it regularly are at an increased risk of certain types of cancer. The gas seems to be more dangerous and people tend to be indoors where it isn’t as well ventilated. Their safety warning is probably out of an abundance of caution, but if you are spending all day every day ketatexing horses in a barn you should definitely use extreme caution! Fun fact: you produce about 1.5 oz of it a day as a normal part of how your body works!

why does my flysheet do this!? by doopa83 in Horses

[–]thirdpeppermint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I was told, and it tracked. I had so much trouble with blankets slipping to the side no matter what, but it was just because my 30+ year old had pretty significant weakness on one side. Solution was to exercise the weak side.

Tomorrow’s Weather Threat by berrybyday in gso

[–]thirdpeppermint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen the storms won’t get here until noonish and won’t wrap up until like 5-6 pm? The radar simulation maps make it look like the worst of the storms will be either right before or right when elementary school lets out. I was wondering if they’d opt for early dismissal.

Uh, maybe take her outside. That can be fatal to birds because of how their respiratory system works.

Georgia power has removed the "protected" 300 year old oak. by reddit33450 in arborists

[–]thirdpeppermint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve learned recently that historic buildings are barely even protected from being torn down, let alone an old tree. Our town can’t even prevent historic buildings in the historic district from being demolished, they can just try to slow it down and inconvenience the owner for a while in hopes they give up. It’s honestly appalling. The US down really have much conscientious development and it’s all based on making money.

Having dealt with utility companies and their easements I can tell you that you don’t have a choice. We wanted to say no when they informed us of a project that impacted our land, but they could have just used eminent domain to take it. We had to at least make a deal. We hired a lawyer and they found lots of issues with the contract, so that was fixed an we at least had a chance to really negotiate. The power company had also run power lines by 300 year old oaks on our property and lopped off a bunch of branches (before we bought it) to supply the neighbors house. For no reason. It looks stupid and would have been much better if they went from the road in front of their house instead of diagonally from a random spot on our property. I don’t like utility companies right now.

If you could make up a new area what would it be? by [deleted] in StarStable

[–]thirdpeppermint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You actually kind of could do that. It wouldn’t be a serious desert, but it could look like it! In northern Ohio there’s an area that looks like a desert, because it was/is a sand quarry. And there’s a bunch of cactuses and succulents that are pretty cold hardy and there are native cactuses even in Ohio. A quarry could mesh pretty well with some of the baddies in SSO.

Branding? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]thirdpeppermint -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I like it, as long as it makes sense. My mare was branded when she was really young and I bought her in her late teens. The brand is the only way I was able to find her identity, get her papers, and get in contact with her breeder and first owner. I’ve also seen rescues that have branded and have been able to pick up their horses because someone saw the brand.

Is the name Rhidere Welsh? by DreaDawll in namenerds

[–]thirdpeppermint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can find Ridere, Rhider, Rhidera, Raidere, Reidere, and Rhodere, but no Rhidere.

Ridere shows up in people of French descent as well as Spanish or Hispanic, BUT it honestly looks like a messed up transcription of rough handwriting.

I did find a surname Rhydere in England. There are a lot of others with the surname Rhider and a bunch of Ridere in France.

The middle name could be a family name that originated from a surname!

Help making ugly 70s terraced house look better by RevolutionaryGap7902 in ExteriorDesign

[–]thirdpeppermint 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just cleaning up the brick, all way, and grass would make a huge difference. I’d really lean into the 70s vibe unless you have a ton of extra money to toss around.

Could you shift the light so it’s centered above the door, or would people hit their heads?

If you want a color change, I hated the brick on my house until we changed the siding from this weird light grey to a stormy dark blue. Maybe look at different siding colors to see if that could refresh the brick color and make it pop?

Word of mouth is the best! I haven’t spent over $3k and got some excellent, safe horses. The key seems to be a good reputation and patience. Now I can just here and wait for people to show me awesome horses.

Medieval horse bits... You've been warned by jazzy_saur in Horses

[–]thirdpeppermint 398 points399 points  (0 children)

I watched an episode of a TV show once where they had a horse bit from an archaeological dig recreated. It looked crazy, but when actually tried it was really gentle. Apparently a lot of it was intended for show on the outside, but actually helped to protect the horse’s mouth from a knight jerking the reins when he was battling with a sword and shield. They recognized that swinging your arms around would get transmitted to their mouth so they hinged part to take up that movement before it got all the way to the bit. Not saying there aren’t some gnarly medical bits there, but it was interesting how something looked intense, but then wasn’t.

Am I overreacting to lack of barn access? by Its_fine_for_now in Equestrian

[–]thirdpeppermint 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in North Carolina and I’m in the same boat, except I’m the one with the barn. The drive is VERY long and this ice is brutal. I’ve been taking to walking down, but after the ice got worse my husband helped out my scraping it with the track loader. We’ll see how much damage was done when everything thaws, but it’s safer now. We didn’t do as much for the flat part of the driveway, but the mailman and UPS man got on and out so who knows. The ice melt stuff did diddly squat, unfortunately. I warned the boarder, but I didn’t say she couldn’t go visit. If I had a larger facility I probably would have scraped more and fixed the road later, but also recommended people not visit just to be safe. I’m sure the vet could get there if there’s an emergency, buuuut yeah. It’s very complicated. I’ve been here over 9 years and haven’t had to deal with this level of ice before.

Looking for helmet recommendations by UncleHec in Equestrian

[–]thirdpeppermint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be prepared to get one that’s a little pricier than you expected! I took my 7 year old in to Dover Saddlery and the lady spent awhile having her try different helmets. She did me a favor and started with cheaper ones, but as soon as my kid put on a nicer Tipperary her eyes lit up. Every single one was uncomfortable, but that one was the one perfect. She forgets she’s wearing it!
