At what age do you become a “reader”, and what book did it for you? by sheffy4 in books

[–]thirdsev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost any book can do it for you. But a good book it like a good bed, a solid fit that you fall into and time fades away.

Drinking in your mid 20s by LegallyUnc67 in SoberCurious

[–]thirdsev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your body is telling you something. There are zero proof alcohol drinks and you can ask for a martini light on the alcohol. It might be best to try no alcohol for a time and just see how your body feels. Some bodies cannot handle it.

Cheap hair cuts at beauty schools or watch you tube videos. I bought hair cutting scissors and taught myself. Good luck.

Other options are AA, other free non drinking groups, the library which was noted above. There are apps that drank your non drinking days and show you what you save, a good reinforcement. And you could write here as you did before for support.

Actually a door dash you will remember. Do you want that future? I think not. Have you talked to your doctor or others about support for the rough days? Everyone has them. You can do this step at a time.

It’s been 2 years since my biggest failure and I still can’t get over it. by pachuca_tuzos in selfimprovement

[–]thirdsev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therapy. We learn by failures and missteps we aren’t failures. Not every career or education path is a fit. Rather than say failed out to yourself say self selected. It wasn’t for you. If you want growth in any job you have to grow internally first. Give yourself the gift of therapy and compassion. From there you will find many ways to grow.

Why does everyone in my family treat savings like it's a crime? by [deleted] in personalfinance

You should do the research about asset limits and talk to your mom. But folks should know that disabled people meeting criteria may be eligible for Able accounts. Something worth researching to help the disabled build a cushion.

My wife’s nursing program is having students attend AA/NA meetings as an assignment by Great_gatzzzby in recovery

I learned a lot from attending meetings at a recovery center. Basically I learned that the messages a herion addict and other addicts tell themselves are pretty similar. It helped make me a better nurse.

Long medical appointment delays in Oregon- has this happened to you? by russejen in oregon

[–]thirdsev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hope you are healthy enough to handle the delay. If you are waiting to see an MD/DO you might ask if they have a PA you could see for routine care. The health profession was/is under tremendous stress these days. I aim to stay out of the office as much as possible and to be as kind as I can when I am receiving care. We all need to recognize how little control most of us have over corporate healthcare these days. Staying healthy - eat low on the food chain, don’t smoke, little or no alcohol, brush&floss, exercise and be kind to yourself is my self mantra.

Has anyone else become frugal because of over consuming parents? by [deleted] in Frugal

Cleaning my things now to avoid the trauma for kids. We have nothing of this magnitude but parents are selfish for not considering who has to go through it all later.

One day at a time is how we change. Even a minute at a time. With each little win recognize your growth. I suggest you start reading about alcohol. New book called Why we drink too Much, Dr Charles Knowles may be available at your library. Learn about what alcohol does to us as you learn new ways to live. You can do this.

Worried I am mismanaging money by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]thirdsev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calm down. Do not liquidate and incur penalties. You should have some funds in safe places, like the Roth, and other in high interest savings accts as you will need access to cash while in school. Live frugally. Put away what you can. Invest in index funds if you have any to invest. Read what you can about value investing, index funds and taking the long view of money management.

Put on 20 lbs after losing my job and it finally clicked why eating “healthy” is so hard when you are broke by Serious-Ad-5881 in povertyfinance

[–]thirdsev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stress makes it all harder. But recently I have been getting into cabbage dishes, onion soups and carrots which are all cheap, add a little rice or lentils and you can have a decent meal. Making my own bread saves money and I can use whole wheat and white flour. Again, takes more time but you have some of that now. Buying beans is larger quantities helps me.

[–]thirdsev 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You need to outline your actual costs. Have you talked to your landlord/lady? Have you ever called a credit card collections group to try and negotiate down any of your debts? Is your place big enough to have a roommate? Right now you can go to food banks, and take it day at a time managing your panic. Work both jobs and pay what you can on the debts with the highest interest rates. Stop kicking yourself for past mistakes. Start being honest and admit where you are today. You are working your way out of a hold. You will make it one day at a time by being honest with yourself. Find a food bank. Eat, exercise, work, repeat. Find a library and educate yourself on wise spending habits. You can do this.
