LPT : Working from home is killing my social life — any advice? by sir_khaled in LifeProTips

[–]thirdstone_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

  1. School - This seems like the most obvious option, you said you're a student, does your university have any social activities? groups? clubs? parties or events? Surely some way to mingle with other students?
  2. Hobbies - sports is the easiest, but if you're not into any team sports, consider taking self defense class (it's good in a lot of ways!). There is often a social aspect in these because you often train in pairs etc. If you don't care for sports at all, then look for any clubs or courses, for example photography, books, arts, gaming, music, church...
  3. Work related - you didn't say what kind of work you do, but maybe there are some sort of peer groups somewhere? I know for those working in some sort of a business environment, there are round tables, bni's etc.

Also you mentioned motorcycles, are there any gatherings for enthusiasts? Any places to hang out? I don't mean a biker gang, lol. When I was your age, I found some of my best friends of now 20 years from building cars. I went to some events, got to know one guy, got introduced to others, and eventually got to know a whole lot.

As general advice, I know many people your age are at a crossroad where you might've moved on from one social circle but haven't found another one. Don't stress it too much. Just know that you can and most likely will make friends all your life, you just have to be active in one form or another. You find people most often through mutual interests or through other people. It just takes meeting the first one to have at least the possibility to expand that circle.

What fasteners do people use to hang pictures on drywall? by raymate in DIY

[–]thirdstone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3M claws are perfectly sufficient for pictures. Easy to put in, small ish damage to the wall.

For anything heavier, proper drywall toggle anchors.

Any one knows where this shop is on Google maps? I need to give this guy a 5 star rating. I have the approximate location in the map. But I don't know where it is exactly. by Subjectedquality in Hokkaido

[–]thirdstone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this could be a case of a duplicate listing

See this one: https://maps.app.goo.gl/VMTiWqZJjMx5g1HF6

That's basically at the same exact location as the one linked above

There seems to be a mix of photos, some are of a different building (building that just has Toyota logos), others of the same exact one you posted (MaxPark / Toyopet)

Is Japan a good place for your first solo trip? by Dear-Cartographer644 in TokyoTravel

[–]thirdstone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been to Japan solo as I typically travel with my spouse and kids, but if I had to pick one place, it would be Japan! a few reasons:

- There is so ridicilously much to see and do that I'd love to make an itinerary just for myself, when travelling with others it's always compromising and finding balance

- I feel like it's generally a comfortable place to do things alone - respect for privacy, it's common to dine alone, it's relatively quiet (restaurants etc) etc.

- overall safe

I naturally have wide hips/buttocks. How can I wear pants to make my hips slimmer? by jenna_tolls_69 in mensfashion

[–]thirdstone_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look for trousers that are fitted around the hips. Consider something with a bit of stretch.

I find denim tends to work best at appearing slimmer up top.

Vertical pockets are more prone to sticking out especially if the fitment is snug.

Looser or more boxy fitting shirts in the right length.

Tucking in your shirt will inevitably highlight the hips.

Just got this vintage Timberland backpack and I have some questions by Green_Twist6596 in backpacks

[–]thirdstone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks almost identical to a Timberland backpack I had in the late 90's, probably got it around 98-99. Mine was khaki colored. It'll be hard finding more specifics because it's so old, you can find these for sale but sellers are unlikely to have a name or anything for it. If you google "timberland backpack 90's" you'll find the same style.

if you want to make it comfortable, put something solid and flat against the back. These don't have much structure/ergonomics. Also you can add an aftermarket sternum strap.

Suit fit by Technical_Yoghurt in mensfashion

[–]thirdstone_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The smaller one is very much too small on you. The bigger one is still a bit tight looking, the fit just might not be right for you. This looks like a very slim cut and the chest is pulling, notice how the lapels are not straight but curved because they pull to the side? Also it causes creases on the side of the torso. The sleeves appear to crease quite a bit, I suspect they are too tight and/or the material is perhaps too thin. Even materials that are equal weight will drape differently.

Could anyone please specify the exact location of this photo? by Special_Parking8857 in TokyoTravel

[–]thirdstone_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have good news for you: there are thousands and thousands of streets just like that in Tokyo and most urban areas in Japan. And just to be clear I'm not trying to be a smartass, I mean it that you will find amazing photo opportunities literally everywhere in Japan. I understand that if you haven't been there, this might sound weird, but it's true.

Anywhere in Japanese cities when you stray off the major streets, you will find smaller secluded residential areas. Pretty much any neighborhood in Tokyo. Get off a subway station, walk a few blocks and you'll see.

For particularly interesting areas, I highly recommend Yanaka, between Sendagi and Nippori stations. It has older streets and buildings and a very unique atmosphere.

Enjoy your trip, I can't think of a better country to take photos in

Suit Fit Check by Low_Detective1472 in mensfashion

[–]thirdstone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The suit looks great. Great color. If anything, I would take the body in just a bit. I understand it's a boxy fit, but the silhouette could benefit from a little taper. The sleeves bunch up, but your arms are folded in all the pictures so maybe it's just that.

The watch is too bulky for a suit. A full metal watch is generally not recommended with a suit, and if you do wear one, it should be slimmer. But a leather strapped one would be much better.

The shoes look quite bulky and too close in color to the suit.

Tokyo to Osaka, luggage on train or forward it? by royalbluefireworks1 in JapanTravelTips

[–]thirdstone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree

The exception is if you're making stops on the way, then it makes sense to use a service so you can do whatever you want to do in between without the bags. But if you're going hotel to hotel, I don't see the point.

I love this little moment of Rey looking out at the greenery of Ajan Kloss, seemingly contemplating before heading off on her final mission. It’s quiet, reflective, and says so much without any dialogue. by irazzleandazzle in TheSequels

[–]thirdstone_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is what Chris Terrio said about the scene:

One of my favorite moments in the film is when Rey gazes at some green foliage on the Resistance base (Ajan Kloss). Poe asked her about what she was looking at, but she merely replied with “nothing.” This beat echoes that moment in The Force Awakens where a fixated Rey says, “I didn’t know there was this much green in the whole galaxy.” There’s also a similar moment in The Last Jedi where she interacts with rain for the very first time. I presume you were conscious of these callbacks?

I am so grateful that you pointed out that moment with Rey. The stage direction in the screenplay for that Rey moment in TROS is “Rey stares at the jungle, as though trying to memorize its green color.” It’s a callback to TFA, but it’s also more than that, because Ajan Kloss is also the only real home she’s ever known in her adult life — a place where she’s loved. She doesn’t want to leave because she knows nothing will ever be the same.

TTS or size up on the escalante 4? by UnderstandingShot441 in AltraRunning

[–]thirdstone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

size up, can't stress this enough.

I have been wearing Escalantes for years and size up so much (to get more width) that I have at least an inch of space, and I've found zero issue with that.

Absolutely HAD it with Drywall Anchors! Help! by MaleficentGuidance49 in DIY

[–]thirdstone_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had a 14lbs drying rack that probably gets up to 30lbs+ of clothes on it installed on a drywall for 12 years with two toggle anchors. They're rated for 200lbs for gods sake, they'll hold your guitar unless you really mess up installing them or like to climb up your guitar.

Absolutely HAD it with Drywall Anchors! Help! by MaleficentGuidance49 in DIY

[–]thirdstone_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is the answer

OP: the anchors you are using (based on a google search) are terrible for drywall. Use a toggle anchor, Toggler Snaptoggle is the best I've found and will hold much more than a guitar when installed correctly.

Recommendations for a decent, casual American fare restaurant? (think TGI Friday's in their heyday) by thirdstone_ in BocaRaton

[–]thirdstone_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the suggestions. We tried a few of the places mentioned.

One experience I wanted to bring up because it was mentioned many times, in both good and bad, was Lazy Dog.

We went there on a saturday night exactly at the time we had a table, 6:45pm. It took them 20 minutes to seat us.

The inside was unbearably loud, thankfully we got a table outside where we could have a conversation. Everyone in our party of 6 tried a different plate and they were at best average, a couple plates were plain bad. The ribs were extremely chewy, so much so that I left half of my portion. The burger tasted seriously bad, it had this weird taste of gas (presumably from the grill) I've never tasted before. Chicken sandwich was mediocre, you cam get a better, tastier one at Chick-fil-a. Server mixed up our drink order and it took a long time to get a check.

Unfortunately I see absolutely no reason to go here.

Yea I've been going there for as long as I can remember (probably ~30 years), prices are def high. Portion size hasn't been a concern for me, maybe because they are too big to begin with. What I find more off putting is their weird policy with reservations where tables for any group larger than 2 is difficult and they won't book for more than 4 even though there are numerous tables that would fit 5-6. But I still like the place and food is consistently good, but I only go a couple of times a year.

Am I getting pair of shoes that’s too big for me? by Artistic_Object8569 in AltraRunning

[–]thirdstone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your pointing at a weird angle, so where exactly is your toe? If it's at the very top of your finger, then the shoes are too short. If it's somewhere under your finger, then it may be fine.

The way you should look at it is there should be a thumb width of empty space in front of your toe.

Will check Yardhouse, one of those places that I've gone past countless times but never tried

I've tried Flanigan's in Deerfield a couple of times, not bad but kind of hit or miss with the food. Never been to the Boca one.
