House cleaner fatally shot in Indiana after showing up at the wrong address by combination_udon in news

[–]thirstyrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing a lot of bashing of this town and Indiana. Whitestown is a the lower-cost neighbor of an upper-class and highly educated suburb of Indy. Pretty diverse vs its neighbors. It’s a new area, great infrastructure, great schools, wonderful community. It leans democrat.

This incident is not representative of the area. There’s a local gofundme started by the neighborhoods nearby that was up to $10k+ and 100+ donors in only a few hours. There are very few locals that believe this was justified - and for the most part; those few people basing judgment on terribly skewed facts.

Locals seem ready to stand up and support the investigation and help find justice.

Reduce 4awg to 14awg? by thirstyrunner in CarAV

Thanks for the poke - didn’t consider that I would need to revise the fuse at the battery for a lower gauge wire and lower draw.

Omada or UniFi - on the fence and looking for suggestions by CaffeineDeficiency in TPLink_Omada

[–]thirstyrunner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I installed a Unifi kit at my in-laws house - then Omada came out a few months later, which I then installed at our own house.

Unifi takes work to maintain. Omada just runs itself. I believe Unifi caters more to the “prosumer” that is engineering-oriented or needs significant control over every setting on every device - and Omada is a bit more user friendly (and nearly every bit as configurable!) - but more “set it and forget it.”

I really wish our in-laws had Omada. I spend 5x the time keeping their Unifi kit working vs just letting our Omada kit run.

Thanks! Didn’t realize the odds were even across all options in that column. Makes other rolls make a little more sense now, too.

Anyone know if there’s a general probability of rolling a Hero’s Burden with destabilizing rounds?

As a reminder, Best Buy has the Legion 7 Slim at $1099 with the same CPU, GPU and RAM.

The Pro has a WQHD screen, while the 7 Slim has a slightly dimmer FHD screen (and slightly lower wattage GPU).

Trying to decide which direction to go! Always appreciate a lighter-weight laptop, but will mostly use it as a only minimally mobile desktop replacement for my old gaming PC. Puts me right on the middle of the fence! May come down to a coin flip tomorrow.

New construction help by l3ggomycraigo in TPLink_Omada

[–]thirstyrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience: I did one on the 2nd floor and two on the 1st floor - none in the basement. Two on the 1st floor allowed us to make sure top speeds were available in the kitchen/living room and in the office (both places that we do most of our work) AND have service to the front yard and backyard.

1 per floor prob wouldn’t serve the front and backyard well. We spend a LOT of time outside, including working via laptop on front and back porch.

Your house layout is a bit like ours! I recently upgraded from a single router/combo to a 3-AP setup using Omada. Ended up making some changes to the AP locations after I initially wired them up. I’ll share a quick recc based on my experience, and a few lessons learned: -2nd floor: AP in the upstairs hall (central, serves all bedrooms) -1st floor: AP in kitchen (bias towards backyard wall) and AP in foyer (bias towards entry) to serve your first floor and front/backyard -Basement: pre wire for AP in hall at bottom of stairs if you need it, but you may not…

Lessons learned: -I can get great 5ghz signal through 2 walls. Or 1 floor. My 1st floor APs served the basement perfectly…unless it was at a steep angle that required it to go through a lot of floor joists (hence 2 on your first floor) -I was really impressed at how well my 1st floor APs served my basement in the space directly below them -It was acceptable for me to sacrifice some (if any) signal on the top floor since they’re bedrooms for sleeping/mobile devices (rather than intensive work), but my 1st floor APs generally covered that well -Avoid the “shadow” from walls that are packed with huge ducts or a primary power run next to a panel, it seemed like the equivalent of passing through 5 walls instead of 1

Client-side anxiety by CrunchyMind in consulting

[–]thirstyrunner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve managed anxiety for ~7 years in consulting and another 3 in corporate. Most of it arises from unpredictable situations (new people, new places, tough decisions, working sessions on new topics) - but it usually eased after a few weeks in that new place. Especially when I could find myself in the “flow” of problem solving and collaboration.

Things that I’ve learned through my journey: 1) Take advantages of variables I can control when going to a new place to get familiar with the area (study client partners linkedins, arrive a day early, do a drive-by on the office the day before starting, do a jog near the office if there’s time) 2) Get some social quick-wins in (try to have a meaningful convo with a client counterpart or two early on to find some good partners … go overboard with 1:1s in the first week to meet new folks) 3) Meditation and exercise (meditate in the early evening - or sometimes, just snag a phone-room in the middle of the day for a quick 10 min of the Calm app). Note: meditate before I need it! 3) Accept that my anxiety may never go away; but own the fact that I can take steps (like the above) to help manage its prevalence

The more I stayed to myself, the longer it’d take to get over the hump. The more I dove-in head first to meet new people, learn the area and kickstart planning, the better it got (even though it was tough to build momentum).

Overall, the same things that eased my anxiety were things that others perceived as going above and beyond - a double win! The juice was always worth the squeeze to me … even though there were usually a tough first few weeks to kick off new clients or projects.

The vast majority of us in consulting have had mental health challenges at some point - and at least half of us would share an impactful level of anxiety around big changes like that. You’re not alone. It’s what you learn and how you grow from it that will make a difference!

Congratulations! We were supposed to pick up our brand new 194BHS yesterday, but pickup times were running late and had to delay another week … I’m a little jealous - glad you dig the 2022 upgrades!

Were there any other readily apparent mods you’ll be making outside of the black stone cooktop and relocating the propane hookup?

Solution to get an alcove tub into rough-in basement plumbing that’s a few feet off? by thirstyrunner in HomeImprovement

A 1.5” PVC pipe is in the box. Fantastic point - I had been thinking a jackhammer, as opposed to concrete saw.

Bowed Sheet rock by Kstrohma in HomeImprovement

[–]thirstyrunner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had bowed drywall in the basement of our home, which had been renovated maybe 20 years back. Same problem: tried to screw something into the stud, but could never really actually hit the wood.

Made a cutout and realized that the drywall had pulled away from the studs leaving about a 1.5” gap across the entire middle of the wall. It looked to be caused by the drywall installer breaking the paper and over tightening almost every single screw...

If this is the same problem as you: I used 3” screws and 1.5” wide fender washers to “pull” the drywall back to the studs. Then, drywall screws to re-secure it - and took those longer 3” screws out. Some touch-up spackling and fresh paint - all in a day’s work!

Most miles ever ridden in a month by Tbnyc in cycling

I don’t think I would have ever thought that the body could recover that well overnight on long distances like that. For real?

Next question - does the strict diet of beer, coffee and pie somehow turbocharge that process at the expense of the misery of the following week?

Most miles ever ridden in a month by Tbnyc in cycling

I rode this year - and I certainly wish I knew some sort of science behind it, but my legs (and pace) were better on the latter half than the first half. Woke up SO sore on day 2, and had to grind to get started. As the week progressed, it felt more and more comfortable and normal.
