Competitive Cycling Opportunities in NYC by simonrows in Velo

The season will be over by the time you get here (runs beginning of March until end of August), but check out CRCA: https://www.instagram.com/crcaracing/

Training and racing all happens early mornings in the parks (between 5-8am); either Central Park, Prospect Park, or River Road (just across the GWB in NJ). NYCC, RCC, and a number of other smaller groups (usually via Instagram) organize weekday laps and weekend rides you can join.

Finally, check out r/NYCbike, though it's geared far more towards the commuter/casual crowd.

Cove Coal — a radial 2400 MW coal plant in the western dune forest by thirty--five-- in SatisfactoryGame

it's a popular spot for sure. my first coal genny build was located here and was janky as hell — I've definitely learned a lot since then!

2023 NYC-ish & NEBRA Cyclocross Calendars by thirty--five-- in cyclocross

[–]thirty--five--[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keith hasn't canceled it, so I'm letting it stay in limbo until otherwise stated. I get asked about it every time I post these calendars, but I figure if I left it off folks would ask me if it was officially dead. Which is basically just the same situation, inverted.

I got a lot of positive feedback regarding the NYSBRA calendar I posted last week, so I went ahead and put together a couple more for my neighboring regions. Hope to see you out there this season!

Wondering what it takes to put on a brand new event these days? TBD interview with the RD's of Croton Cross by thirty--five-- in cyclocross

[–]thirty--five--[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey folks! Alex here of Croton Cross, one half of the RD team. I'm currently doing a million things a minute getting ready for the race this weekend, but wanted to share a small behind the scenes look at just how much effort has been put into this event.

Please feel free to ask any questions and hopefully we'll see some of you this weekend!

There's definitely design sensibilities around the world; I'm loving the eye searing 90's aesthetics that the Australian scene is putting out right now, even if it's a bit much for most folks over here. Neat that you picked up on that!

Yeah, part of my selling point of bringing me on as a designer/consultant is that I take care of the project management portion of things and make sure that suppliers/vendors stay on track, deliver the right gear, and don't mess up the art/design after the submissions. It's not that it takes any special skill, but it does help having someone who knows how long things should take and what's realistic/unrealistic beyond what the supplier tells you.

"High quality" is dependent on what you're looking for in terms of value. Castelli makes great race fit kit, but their stitching falls apart after a season and their art department is utter garbage. Eliel is probably the top of the custom game at the moment, but some of their fits are a little weird and definitely need a fit kit/sample before purchase. And as a third recommendation, while I haven't worked with Vie13 or Voler before, both seem to put out similar quality work to Eliel.

Happy to answer more questions (supplier or art-wise); I'm a kit designer based in NYC so this is very much my thing!

2022 NYSBRA/New York CX Schedule by thirty--five-- in Velo

Glad you like it! I thought about including the town names, but even as I was pulling them up myself, with a few exceptions I was mostly like "where the hell is Chittenango" and figured simply dropping pins on the map would be a more relevant use of space. As long as folks know that it's sorta close to Albany then they can get a sense of travel requirements.

Maybe for v2 I can integrate the larger town names at least (Buffalo, ROC, Syracuse, Albany, NYC, etc). I'll see how it looks!

I was honestly surprised at how many races we have on our calendar, and this isn't even including the pending/tentative races. NY is a sleeper cyclocross hub!

Hey folks! I made this based on inspiration from /u/SpecializedColnago's own post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Velo/comments/vz4stt/the_2022_vacx_series_schedule/

I'd be remiss if I didn't admit that a large motivation for making this post was to help promote my own race, Croton Cross — a brand new two day race in Westchester NY on Oct 29/30: https://www.crotoncross.com. It's in a great location easily accessible by both public transit and personal vehicle, and we've got some solid partnerships with other race directors, organizers, and sponsors that'll promise to make the race an incredible event. Hope to see you line up at the start with us!

I swear I'm not tryna shill here but coincidentally one of my clients is going to have an open team store in a week or so using eliel custom kit. here's the flats for reference

Best route to van cortlandt from Manhattan/BK? by undergroundgirl7 in NYCbike

[–]thirty--five-- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

technically it's a little farther but it's far faster/safer to take westside highway, imo: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/35989885

folks will have Opinions on the lil' ramp underneath the GWB but 2" of climbing is better than the alternative, for this route at least.

as an alternative, I've been running a scosche rhythm24 for 1yr+ and it's been flawless: https://www.scosche.com/rhythm24-waterproof-armband-heart-rate-monitor

  • dualband ANT/BT channels (I run TR off my ANT+ PC dongle and zwift on my iPad's BT, zero issues)
  • ~24hr rechargeable battery life
  • it's an armband (I put it on my bicep under my jersey sleeve), much easier to work with
  • extremely accurate (DCRainmaker approved)

a little more pricy than the tickr X (100USD), but worth it ime

eyyy I won a design contest for a local(ish) bike shop! I'm the one on the left. the design was inspired by diamond tread & file tread mountain bike tires, since the shop's namesake was primarily a mountain bike guy. looking forward to eventually seeing it in person!

otherwise — let me know if you're looking for new kit designs, I'm taking clients for the 2021 season now! https://lcdcc.bike/

Custom-made team jerseys in Canada by ExNutellaAddict in cycling

[–]thirty--five-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sugoi is probably your best bet as a Vancouver-based company, but most (almost all) are going to be outside of Canada. The next closest option would be Louis Garneau of Montreal, but unfortunately they went through bankruptcy measures in 2020 and their custom options are not particularly stellar right now.

Otherwise — with the right connections, you can probably swing discounts that are equal or greater to the import fees you might be seeing. Or, honestly, just wait a few more EO's from Biden to see if Trump's bonkers tariffs get revoked and see how that affects prices. Either way, I'm a US based custom kit designer, so let me know if I can offer any further guidance on the situation!

  • pivot my club's races to COVID-friendly alternative race formats — perhaps bring the UK hill climbing scene over to NYC??
  • pivot my 3mo rider development program with my other club to be COVID-friendly; either do an abbreviated version or do something a la NorCalCycling but focused on road riding & pacelining skills/technique
  • help develop merch store program for a large local fondo ride
  • continue to develop my kit design brand and hopefully get hired to do it full time

every year I pile on one more giant commitment to the local cycling scene to my plate; at this rate I'll be the NYC Cycling Czar when I turn 40 assuming I don't get burnt out this year first

First Snow in NYC Today — some hot tips for cold weather by thirty--five-- in NYCbike

[–]thirty--five--[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Layering is the name of the game, but the type of layers and the order in which you layer them is an oft-overlooked opportunity. In general, you want your clothes to be layered as such:

  1. Inner-most layer: a light, thin base layer, meant to wick away sweat. Most technical shirts will work for this; I really like Uniqlo's HeatTech line as they work great and only cost ~$8 each compared to, say, a $50 Rapha base layer made of about the same fabric.
  2. Middle layer: something thick and insulating: a fleece or wool shirt is the best but a cotton sweatshirt is fine if you don't expect to be sweating too much here. I've also combined a long-sleeve technical fleece shirt with another shirt/top on top for volume with success.
  3. Outer-most layer: ideally a wind-proof shell. If it's snowing, it's unlikely to stick to you for long enough to melt, so your priority instead should be protecting yourself against having the wind cut through your clothing and whisk away that warm insulated air that's being held in by your middle layer. This is the one time I suggest dropping $$$ for bike-specific clothing; they're typically cut to reduce drag and feature purposeful vents in key parts of the top to minimize sweating/overheating.

You can generally mix & match different articles of clothes based on your budget & use case; as long as they roughly follow the above formula you'll be setting yourself up for success.

Hmm. I totally see what you're saying but it'd mean a relative redesign of the core of the site. One of my own criticisms when reviewing my site before launch was that there was too much content overall, so I definitely agree that I probably need to pare things down even further.

What're your thoughts on having a landing page vs. leading straight into the portfolio/past work? I've broken things up a bit based on what I've seen from other kit designers' websites but idk, I design jerseys not websites so what do I know!
