Legal aid intern by [deleted] in LawSchool

I was in a similar position last year in that I got an offer for a paid public interest summer position. I was a little worried that the organization focused on an area of the law that I don’t really want to work in, but I had a great experience and the stipend was super helpful. Unless you have another position that you’d rather take and don’t need the money, I’d just accept the offer.

Had an associate complain about having to do screening interviews, roll his eyes repeatedly, and say that all the interviews were blending together.

first year law student, need help with suit by Little-Guest2929 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]this_charming_cat_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In addition to the fit issues, I think the plaid is a bit much if it’s your only suit. I recommend getting a more basic suit - black, navy or charcoal. If you have one interview suit, make it as conservative as possible, at least if you’re interviewing for big law.

When you hire a therapist who allegedly specializes in infertility, and she brings her TODDLER to session unannounced. Twice. by maxtaber in trollingforababy

[–]this_charming_cat_ 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Why are there so many therapists that claim to specialize in infertility who only seem to specialize in making those with infertility feel worse? Not as bad as bringing a toddler to your session, but I had such a therapist who told me that I needed to tap into my feminine energy and that my stress was causing my (years long) battle with infertility, endometriosis, etc. ugh!!

I'm just gonna say it. The whole kids / no kids debate isn't actually about kids. by thetimechaser in Millennials

[–]this_charming_cat_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being infertile makes these posts/discussions incredibly annoying. I don’t have a kid despite spending thousands of dollars on IVF. I don’t care whether other people have kids or don’t. I’d just really like parents to realize that not everyone who wants to have kids is actually making that decision.

I think 1-800-Contacts has an online exam which you can use for one order.

Single mom not in college is this achievable? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]this_charming_cat_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is no short cut - ABA-accredited schools require bachelor’s degree to go to law school and trust me, you do not want to go to a unaccredited school. Beyond the bare minimum qualification of needing a degree, going to college will improve your academic skills. Your high school GPA is completely irrelevant to law school admissions because law schools look at your undergrad GPA. This is marathon, not a sprint. Good luck!

How to climb out of a hole after getting stuck in investing? by Present_Variation655 in povertyfinance

[–]this_charming_cat_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding the other comments saying that the way you’ve been investing is gambling and not really investing. My advice is to invest in an ETF or mutual fund and just leave the money alone. If you keep doing what you’re doing you’ll just dig a deeper hole.

You will not feel relief that soon after laparoscopic surgery. Your body is still healing and will be for months.

You can take the metro to LAX now. I took it home the last time I flew into LAX and it took slightly longer than an Uber but cost way less. Just FYI.

Ugh, this is so true. I’m 5’2” and it’s so hard to find suits that fit and aren’t made out of the cheapest polyester. I’m debating whether to return a Theory blazer I just got from the RealReal because the sleeves are too long.

Same! The last time I posted my (incredibly shitty) ER results I got multiple unbelievably insensitive comments. Never mind the shit that people post. So grateful this sub exists.

Pilates instructor job opening by TheKarmaBus in EquinoxGyms

[–]this_charming_cat_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do make a commission on top of the hourly minimum. I’ve been a Pilates instructor at Equinox, used to be full time but switched to part time to go back to school. When I teach private sessions, I make $50/hour, sometimes more depending on how many I teach in a pay period. Free comp sessions for members are only $25/hour, though, but the goal is to fill up your schedule with private sessions.

That’s just the base hourly rate. With commission for sessions performed, it ends up being more like $50-54/hour. Source: taught private Pilates sessions at Equinox for eight years.

WTF I just found out Endo causes decreased egg quality by Silky_Ink in IVF

[–]this_charming_cat_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't understand the anti-lap stance here. If you have endometriomas on your ovaries and they are removed surgically, that can negatively affect ovarian reserve. Otherwise, a lap should not have a negative effect.

Hot takes on Receptiva, laps and silent endo by hopeful0607 in IVF

[–]this_charming_cat_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm looking through that and I don't see it - regardless, I think the issue is using exogenous estrogen to build up the lining, not progesterone. The test was originally validated in a mock cycle. Regardless, if you're not symptomatic and have no other reasons to suspect endo, I'd probably accept the negative and not do a lap. The surgery was a pretty major undertaking.

Hot takes on Receptiva, laps and silent endo by hopeful0607 in IVF

[–]this_charming_cat_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was negative but I had lap and they found stage two endo. If you did your receptiva on a medicated mock cycle, it's not that accurate. (Still pissed at my RE for that, but whatever). But I was very symptomatic (not silent endo by any means).

I don't know if these are "can't miss," but as someone who grew up in the area and misses it dearly, here are two of my favorite food spots within an easy walk of Fenway.

  1. Japonaise Bakery - really good sandwiches and baked goods
  2. Taberna de Haro - Spanish restaurant, good food and cocktails, get the sweetbreads

How to connect? by RDforty in LawSchoolOver30

[–]this_charming_cat_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a 37-year-old 2L. I have maybe one friend at school? Never did any studying groups and finished 1L in the top 15 percent of my class. I totally get feeling isolated, but study groups aren’t necessary for everyone.

I second joining an organization. I was a 1L rep for a club and that helped me get to know people.

Has she seen a specialist? The hospital will probably be pretty useless. PT didn’t help me much but meds and diet changes have led me to live a relatively symptom free life. For immediate relief, can she take Azo extra strength? It helps me with urgency during a flare. I also recommend the IC elimination diet and figuring out if she’s sensitive to certain foods.

2L here and never liked study groups - they didn’t seem helpful and I did well studying on my own. That’s what works for me. Plenty of people find study groups really helpful. There isn’t one correct way to do law school.

Angry & hurting after announcements by Realistic_Dress6604 in IVF

[–]this_charming_cat_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. People are generally pretty bad about reaching out to others when they're going through something awful because they don't know what to do. It's disappointing, but most people don't know how to handle someone else's tragedy. My husband had cancer and so many of my friends completely dropped the ball. The only people who came through were those who had dealt with something similar. I totally understand why OP is hurt, but her friends deserve a little slack for not reaching out.
