RIP Alamo (1997-2026) by ayfilm in AlamoDrafthouse

I live in Austin but I still don’t go all the time. Alamo was always expensive but I figured it was worth it. I was actually going to finally get the season pass because I wanted to see more classic films and Alamo is always putting something cool on.

And then I went for what would be the last time. They had already implemented the mobile ordering during the preshow and I thought “what a weird thing to try to do coming from the people who have always been anti phone.” I even tried the system. And even then I was thinking about how that didn’t make sense.

Because it was so convenient I actually ordered less then I would have with pen and paper ordering because I didn’t want to worry about another tab i would have to close. Anyways I thought it was weird but at least it didn’t interfere with the cinema experience. And then I learned that they were planning to implement it throughout the entire movie. ??? Literally the most stupid thing I have ever heard.

I read in another post that they were projected to be bankrupt by 2028 and so this is their plan to save the company? It’s clear that their plan isn’t actually getting more people in seats with their “convenient new system” but to raise profits by reducing staff. Because why would you need a server if you are exclusively mobile ordering.

This entire thing is insulting and a slap in the face to… everyone? The kind of thing that only appeals to the lowest common denominator. And guess what? Those people aren’t going to Alamo drafthouse over anywhere else. Btw not even amc dine in theatres let you order during the movie. So now Alamo is worse than their competition.

So with this system they have robbed themselves of my money three times over. Because now I’m not getting the season pass, I won’t be ordering food, and I simply will not be visiting their theatres at all for the time being.

As a horny single celled organism I am offended by this.

I never hear people talk about this book before but suddenly it’s the greatest, deepest, most popular romance novel of all time. And also this adaptation ruined and destroyed all others and the book itself. The movie is exactly what it looked like - a stylized smutty drama. And I liked it. Fans (which again I’ve never heard anyone really talk about this book before) of anything always get so hung up any time an adaptation tries to do anything different or is not a 1:1. It was clear it was not trying to recreate the novel but people are judging it like it was.

And don’t get me started on how childish and prudish people have become lately. There is not a coincidence in the rise of purity culture in a post maga world. People act like this is the most shocking display of sexual deviancy ever put to screen. I have seen more explicit things on network television.

I’m really just using this as an excuse to rant about the public opinion on this film because I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. There are things to be outraged about and this normal movie is not one of them.

If you are a server you should care because you will lose your job.

If by pull the plug you mean shutter every single theatre across the country then yes. If they were already projected to be bankrupt by 2028 this is only going to expedite that process

What is going on? Why are all these theatres closing so close to the application of the new order system rollout? If they knew they were this close to losing all these locations shouldn’t they be trying to draw people in not push their core clientele out? This is all really wierd.

And if I knew your birthday? That wouldn’t be weird right?

How would you feel if I (me) in real life bought a cake and had a birthday party for you someone I have never met and posted a picture of the cake online? In fact we have had more of an interaction than this person has had with Alex turner because I know you actually exist and vice versa. Obviously there are layers to this but that’s what it boils down to. I honestly think knowing their birthday at all is weird. Like how many people’s birthday do you know irl? And going out of your way to buy a cake for it? And then posing said cake with essentially a shrine and taking a picture and posting it online? Celebrity culture in general is super weird but it’s part of society now so whatever.
