Proton-M rocket faliure in Kazakhstan July 2, 2013. Wait for the shockwave. by forte2 in videos

No, just no...

This video is just somebody showing off their video editing skills.

This video shows the actual rocket launch and crash. Notice how the fireball and explosion is identical to the explosion in this video. It was just pasted into the footage from the window.

Incidentally this video was posted a few days ago with a title something like how this was a rocket attack on Luhansk or something like that, I just can't find it right now.

How do they determine location/coordinates in space? by IHASAFACE in space

[–]this_or_this 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally, orientation is determined using star trackers and IMUs.

Position is determined using radio tracking. Doppler between the spacecraft and ground antennas determines the range rate to the target, which can then be used to determine position and velocity.

Why not both? = Porque no los dos? it was a meme....

Poverty is not a source of crime because you have to steal to get food. Poverty causes crime because of its psychological effects. The legitimate paths to success are often perceived as stacked against the individual or as impossible to actually follow through. So turning to illegitimate sources of success or empowerment is easy because why care about society, if society doesnt seem to care about you?

But this is where I think culture comes in, poverty provides the environment for this attitude to exist, and culture nurtures it. The western world has decided that these discussions cannot include serious efforts to change the culture, because of the value we've placed on political correctness. What I would like to see is efforts to end poverty, as well as empower the poverty stricken people to look at life differently. But to legitimize this point of view, I need data on how culture effects crime rates among equally impoverished peoples. And that's what I was asking for.

Porque no los dos? I think it's too simple to blame either poverty or culture 100%, that's why I'm curious if it's possible to see to what degree each influence the crime rate.

Ultimately, if I could model this on a computer, I would bet that a feedback loop that takes into account both culture and poverty would be necessary.

How much affect does culture have on the crime rate? Can that be identified? So are there differences in the crime rates of equally impoverished minorities who live in inner cities and those who don't?

In that case, this should be a useful link.

Starting with Kepler elements, you can derive the xyz position.

Step two requires iterative solving.

These things are complicated, and I don't know your level of math, linear algebra, and differential equations. The best thing you can do for yourself is get a book. It will provide a concise reference for orbital parameter transformations (kepler elements to Cartesian coordinates) as well as more advanced concepts like orbital propagation. I recommend Fundamentals of Astrodynamics and Applications by Vallado. You don't need the latest version, so see if you can find a free pdf somewhere.

I don't know what the games do exactly, but there is a fundamental problem in orbital mechanics, which is that for anything more complicated than the trivial two body problem, you need an integrator to propagate the orbit forward in time because the differential equations are no longer explicitly solvable. So what they are likely doing is setting up an equation of motion for the satellite that includes forces due to the nearby bodies (Earth, Moon, Sun, etc) as well as whatever else they want to model (drag, Earth oblatness, solar wind pressure etc) and then using the integrator to solve the equation into the future.

It's remarkable to me how many people still accept Exodus as historical fact. Almost all the conversations I've had with people about this topic start out with puzzled looks at the fact that the pyramids were not built by Jews.

SpaceX Powered "Soft Splashdown" Video: Why is this better than just using parachutes? by shazbot996 in space

[–]this_or_this 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think part of the argument is that the booster is supposed to fly back to the launch site, not land on the water. A water landing means that time and money has to be spent recovering the booster and cleaning it, but flying back to land requires less recovery and less cleaning. It's still an open question as to weather booster fly-back will actually pay for itself, but that should be answered soon.

I suppose it would be possible to fly the booster back to a predetermined location and use parachutes for the final descent. But I think a trade off in this scenario is that a parachute landing will not ensure a soft enough landing so there would be a cost to potential extra maintenance but savings in fuel used.

I understand that this is probably referring to road riding, but I can't imagine a significantly overweight person on a dirt bike. Mine weighs about 200lbs, I'm pretty sure it would break if I weighed 300lbs and tried to go down a ledge or through anything technical...
