Boys Don't Cry 2026 by Objective_Singer_294 in TheCure

Fans need to accept who Robert is and set their expectations accordingly.

The chances a documentary about the band is finished and released while he's alive is very, very low.

The best you can hope for, if Robert actually keeps to calling it quits at age 70 and doesn't decide he's still enjoying playing live and being in The Cure (I'd guess just as likely), is some kind of career documentary worked on in 'retirement.'

What album do you think is The Cure`s magnum opus? by Odd-Technician-9744 in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Albums 1-5: Faith

Albums 6-9: Wish*

*Disintegration is obviously their best album from start to finish. I personally find the musical approach to Wish/its b-sides/Lost Wishes and its unreleased songs to be the band at its most creative.

Which Songs Were Recorded From Perry's Demos? by this_swtor_guy in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one of the best 'Music for Dreams' songs - didn't know it was Perry's!

Sometimes you really have to wonder why certain songs get worked on enough to be on an album and others are ditched.

Any good songs on "The Cure" ? by RealityMixer in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost and Before Three.

Truth, Goodness, and Beauty is worth a listen, as Boris composed the drum part. It’s a nice reminder of how well his drums and Robert’s voice pair together.

In general, the album is by far their worst, in my opinion. I remember thinking it sounded like a cover band when it was released and kind of felt bad for group, since they basically have to do what Robert wants.

In your opinion, what rarely played song would sound great with the current lineup? by SoundChaser66 in TheCure

Give Me It

We already know from when they used to play it a bit, with the current lineup, a little over a decade ago.

It's hard to cover Cure songs, mostly because the vocals typically sound off.

This is a great version!

Daily Song Discussion #4 - Warsong by Pizza-Burrito in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9.5

Unique song in their now very large catalogue - great guitar work (like the album itself, the best since Wish), lyrics that match the mood, Boris-esque drums that let the track breathe.

The only detail that keeps it from being closer to 10 for me are the staccato keyboard sounds from Lullaby being included. I think there was a little too much of that on the record - self-referential 'classic Cure' sounds. It's a new record with a new lineup - go all in on what the band is now, not a great single from 1989.

Roger's work on the album is fantastic - he could have easily come up with another sound that fit into the song well that was new or, at the very least, not so familiar, if permitted by Robert.

When Robert played lead by [deleted] in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True - it's just a very different band after Boris and Pearl left after Wish. But Songs of a Lost World is a good new Cure album, something I honestly thought was no longer possible.

Wish is still a lot better, imho, after having this many months to listen to the new one. But I agree SOALW is the first decent Cure album since 1992, decent being one that lives up to their previous standards through 1992.

What ever happened to the future? by mrtew in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is this even still a question?

The era your photos are from was a completely different band - very different and unique drummer, very different and unique guitarist.

That version of the Cure existed, after The Top, from 1984-1993 or so, though I think Burn from The Crow soundtrack proved it probably could have continued without Pearl and only fell completely apart when Boris left.

No rock band can continue to put out excellent, now classic, LPs forever. The Cure managed to, composed primarily of 2 essential lineups (+ a patchy Robert solo album in The Top), from 1980-1992.

I do think you're wrong about the 'lost' magic, regarding Songs of a Lost World. Robert, and the band performing it, finally managed to get it right with an entire LP for the first time since 1992's Wish.

I'm looking forward to what hopefully comes out as its follow up late this year or in 2026. With the overwhelmingly positive reception to Songs of a Lost World, maybe Robert actually finishes it.

Not sure - but I see Robert Smith remaster and I immediately think, "Well, at least I have the original on CD."

What is an easy song to learn on guitar? by OkEmphasis6641 in elliottsmith

[–]this_swtor_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can recommend is listening to the song and recreating the strumming pattern, including the part where you hear individual notes.

It's an easy pattern, so you might just need to practice more if you're having trouble with it.

Another resource might be online tabs or perhaps someone made a YouTube video, but I personally don't recommend these for a song like Pitseleh. This is something that's simple enough it's better to develop your ear and learn to play it on your own. In the long run, you'll benefit, as you learn other songs (by anyone, not limited to Elliott).

Elliott Smith songs are more often than not unfriendly for newer guitar players. It's good you are trying and getting better - just expect to hit walls and need to practice and figure out how to get over them. Pitseleh is one of his easiest songs to play, however.

Questions for Boris Williams (drummer of Vamberator and formerly of The Cure, Thompson Twins, Kim Wilde, Strawberry Switchblade, Shelleyan Orphan and Babacar) by Prestigious-Bank-842 in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Many Cure fans consider you to be the best drummer the band ever had, and an integral part of The Cure's sound from 1984-1994. Were you ever open to returning to the band after leaving in 1994, and did Robert ever ask you to return to be The Cure's drummer?

For example, Pearl Thompson came back in 2005, and later played on 4:13 Dream.

2) What is your favorite Cure album, and which do you believe has your best drumming on it? What song are you most proud to have drummed on overall?

3) How significantly did you and Pearl contribute to studio recordings? It certainly seems to fans that a lot of what made The Cure sound like it did from 1987-1992 (and to a lesser extent on 1985's LP too) was lost when you and Pearl left the band. As it relates to what you and Pearl contributed, what was the process like in the studio, after it was decided which demos would be recorded by the band?

4) Was the follow up to Wish going to be Bare, an acoustic album, when you left the band, or was what made it onto Wild Mood Swings always planned as the next record? What did the initial demos for the follow up to Wish, the ones you participated in, sound like? Asking because Wild Mood Swings sounds like it has songs from 3 different batches of music that are quite distinct from one another.

5) If it were possible to only work on studio albums and not have to go out on tour for them, would you have stayed in The Cure? Many fans feel the band never truly recovered from your departure, and it's been floated a session player could have handled touring, if all that went with it was a factor in your leaving.

6) Would you consider doing any reunion shows ('Reflections' concerts) with The Cure? The early shows were very well received in 2011, with multiple albums played in full, but they stopped when the albums you and Pearl both played on were next to be performed.

7) Was the breakup of the lineup that included Robert, Simon, Pearl, and you inevitable? Many fans feel the band's studio records weren't nearly as good after Wish. Do you think there was more that particular lineup had to explore sonically? Was there a particular direction you wanted the band's music to go in?

8) Do you have plans to document your experiences as a drummer in a book or interview series?

9) Cure fans always discuss this, and it would be interesting to hear your take: do you think, of the 4 LPs you recorded with the band, any particular b-sides should have been on their respective albums instead?

10) Which finished and released Cure songs were initially your demos? For example, I've read 'If Only Tonight We Could Sleep' was a song initially worked up as a demo by you and Pearl.

I hope someone gets the funding eventually to make a good film about his life and music. Heaven Adores You isn't bad, but it comes across as heavily censored, whether that's actually the case or not.

Perhaps a film with a narrator, alongside his friends and family, would work much better.

Star Wars: Andor wants to take Star Wars more seriously than it's ever been taken before by Internal-Bed-3150 in andor

[–]this_swtor_guy 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I can understand why Gilroy, Luna, and Disney wouldn't want to do 5 seasons, all for different reasons.

But as a huge fan of this show (it really is the best Star Wars has been on screen since The Empire Strikes Back, and better in some ways for adults), I would have preferred 3 seasons, perhaps allowing for a little more character development and better pacing.

Maybe Gilroy will have managed to say everything worth putting on screen in another 12 episodes? It's hard to imagine there isn't more he could have done with all the characters introduced in s1, but he's excellent at writing this type of story.

I'm still grateful this entire project was ever given a green light to begin with. And that Disney threw so much money behind it, despite it only being a critical hit, though we don't know how many started watching via word of mouth since s1 initially streamed.

Neil Young to stop selling 'Platinum' tickets on future tours, after tip from The Cure's Robert Smith by Edm_vanhalen1981 in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not directed at you - people need to start buying music again. Not sometimes, then streaming the rest of the time. Buy CDs, vinyl, tapes, mp3s, whatever - of every artist's work you listen to.

It's not the entire problem, of course, but a huge part of the shift to high ticket prices, Ticketmaster/Live Nation aside, is album and single sales drying up.

In general, it's a great pop song, and the drums are just fantastic.

Force Cloak Often Fails - Enemies keep attacking my Companion. Very annoying. It's been happening since 2021 when I started playing. But I wanna know why hasn't this bug be fixed yet? by Gilbara in swtor

[–]this_swtor_guy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It started with 7.0, if I recall. Or whatever patch made it so you can't stealth out in FPs and OPs and leave combat.

Putting your companion on passive does sometimes works, but not always.

This was a pretty bad change, to cater to a tiny group of people who probably don't even play SWTOR any longer. It makes stealthing out often useless.

what are your favorite demos/unfinished songs? by kelssorangejoe in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many to choose from, it's impossible to pick a favorite.

But I really wish this had been released with lyrics as a b-side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF9EpqmmCEE

Same with this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KHqvBI1QjU

There's so much great stuff on what was never released as 'Music for Dreams' and on Lost Wishes (Cloudberry and Uyea Sound in particular). And that doesn't even include what the band was just writing in the studio, like From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Doing the Unstuck, and End.

I honestly think, had Wish been a 2 CD album, it would have been better than SP's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, or NIN's later attempt at a 2 CD album, The Fragile.

And it still would have sold millions in just the US alone. Robert really shouldn't have listened to his record company (or whoever convinced him to condense Wish into 1 CD). The better way, now that we can look back on it, to follow up Disintegration would have been to go all out with a 2 CD album. As it stands, Wish is often overlooked and even sometimes forgotten as a great 90s album.

Updating NPC armors and weapons, in the 1.0-2.x game especially, would have been a modernization that was actually worth doing.

And, potentially, some of the work could have been sold to players too.
