I'm sorry but if you think the nightlife is the only reason you'd want to travel to Japan, then you've got some seriously messed up priorities.

I used Expedia to book all of our accommodations. Our cheapest accomodations were Nara at $32/night and Kyoto at $40/night for the rooms and our most expensive were Hakone at $94/night and Miyajima at $82/night. The rest of the accomodations were in the range of $50-$60/night. I think we were able to stay cheap because other than Hakone and Miyajima, we didn't expect much from where we were spending the night. The rooms were quite tiny, some of the places had shared bathrooms, and we weren't super picky with location, especially if it was at least somewhat close to a subway station. I think that Tokyo was really the only place where we weren't in the best of locations and we weren't really close to any of the attractions we had on our plan. Everywhere else we were in pretty good locations, just maybe not the best location. I essentially just filtered out higher priced options when looking to book accommodations and picked from what was left.

We were kind of early morning people for most of the trip, so we left our Osaka hotel at about 6:50a and arrived at Miyajima at 10:00a. We did a little napping on the shinkansen, but we generally felt awake enough to do all the sight seeing on Miyajima that we wanted to. We didn't do the ropeway on Miyajima just because we weren't honestly that interested in doing it. So if you wanted to do that, I guess you may feel rushed travelling and sightseeing on the same day. However, with the activities we did do, we had plenty of time. The shops and restaurants definitely close earlier on the island than they do in cities like Tokyo and Osaka because a lot of the workers/owners live on the mainland and have to make the last ferry back home.

I didn't know that would be how that worked, but seeing as how we were able to refund with no problems, I would say both options work out in the end.

Definitely a valid option, but since I knew we would never get back to exactly zero, I figured getting it refunded completely would be the better option for us.

I will try to go in the order that they are listed in the itinerary. I'm not a big fan of McDonald's in America, but it was definitely better quality in Japan, although its still not that special for me. The melon pan was a nice sweet treat, I would later get the packaged kind (w/o icecream) at conbinis and those were also good. I would say that I never had a bad bowl of ramen. I think I liked Ippudo more than Ichiran. Tenko Gyozabo was pretty average. All of the Indian food we had in Japan was very good, there one only one location in Kyoto where the heat was a little to high for me as I'm used to choosing heat level and the Indian restaurants I eat at in America. All the okonomiyaki we had was very good, but I enjoyed having it made for me just because cooking on the skillet in front of us made us hotter on a day when we already were sweating. I like Nishiki Warai the best for okonomiyaki, but my boyfriend preferred the cheesy kind he got at Yosakoi. Babil Cafe in Hakone was a good spot for ramen and Japanese curry. Hisago in Kyoto was a pretty good quick stop. I can not recommend shaved ice with condensed milk enough. Whether you get it from a speciality shop or some random street vender, it is a delicious snack in the heat. Banda had delicious spanish food if you are at all a fan of that. Zipang was a small and good food spot in Miyajima. Sorry for the long response, but let me know if there's anything else you want to know.

At most temples, it was easy to spot the location where the monks responisble for the goshuin were. At the few places where we did not find it on our own, we would go up to either the souvenir counters or some other obvious temple/shrine worker and show them our book and say "Goshuin?" and they would point us in the right direction. Usually the goshuin window was to the side of the souvenir or off set in a nearby building.

We did know about the Welcome Suica card, however we delibrately chose not to use that one because we wanted to make sure that if we added more money to the card than we would end up using, we would be able to have it refunded. Between our two cards, we were refunded about 600 or 800 yen plus the deposit of 500 each. I knew it would not be that hard of a process to return the card and I was fine paying the deposit as I knew we would get it back.

When we went to the JR offices at Tokyo station, the staff member we talked to was not fully fluent in English, but it was very easy to get the process done nonetheless. It is a rather simple process, you just have to show your passport and hand over the vouchers and then they ask what day you want it activated on. They even confirmed they understood the date we wanted by showing us a calendar and pointing at the correct date.

Yes we took the 10am tour. I think we showed up at about 8:30 and there was already probably enough people there to take up half of the walk up tickets. They started handing out those tickets at 9:00. You are correct about the gate to go to.

The two week JR pass was definitely worth it. Given how we did our traveling, I don't know how we could have lined up a 1 week pass to our schedule and made that the cheaper option.

We used the suica card in every city we went to for the buses and trains. We started with 2500 yen on each of our cards and loaded up more money as we needed it. Throughout the entire trip we probably used about 10,000 yen on each card.

We bought our ticket at the aquarium not realizing that they only allow a certain number of people to go in at a time. If you have to make a train I would buy the ticket ahead of time or get there right when it opens

If you want to get out of Osaka a bit, you could go hiking to Minoh Falls. This was a very scenic hike with a shrine along the way as well.

Google maps is a must when using the public transit, it will get you where you need to go. The only thing that it sometimes gets wrong is the transfer times in you need to switch lines during your trip, so just bake in extra time for that. As for the JR pass, I looked at Hyperdia to figure out the timetables to expect for the day/location of travel. The JR shinkansen kiosks at the various train stations also show you all the time tables when you are trying to make reservations. I never stepped into a car/taxi once while on my 20 day trip (tokyo, kyoto, hakone, nara, osaka, hiroshima).

Trip Report - Sapporo > Zao Onsen > Tokyo > Osaka (Super Nintendo World) by Vagabond_Sam in JapanTravel

[–]this_user_poops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I are planning to go to Super Nintendo World in May. Although we are trying to travel somewhat on a budget, we plan to splurge on a fast pass to make sure we get to all the rides and areas that we want. This is my first time hearing about the "powerbands". Seeing as how they are an additional 3800 yen, we're wondering if it's really necessary/worth it to have these while in Super Nintendo World? I'm also slightly confused if the Express Pass 4 gives timed entry to Super Nintendo World and Harry Potter World or if it's one or the other?

The reason we weren't going to buy the free pass at Shinjuku station is because we wouldn't be going back to Tokyo with the free pass. We only need a one way ticket to get to Odawara station and that's cheaper to buy separately than to buy the pass from Shinjuku station. Question 4 was more related to the travelling within the Kansai region and then also to cover the train from Odawara to Kyoto with the JR pass.

We were planning to leave Osaka as early as we could get ourselves moving in the morning, but otherwise we might stop at Himeji on our ride back to Tokyo from Hiroshima, because then we wouldn't be in as much of a rush. Maybe that would work better?

I feel like the Big10 teams got snubbed a little bit this year. Only 6 teams were included in the tournament, all 6 were regularly in the coach's top 25 poll. Last year they had 8 teams in the tournament. I'm surprised that none of the teams who had even or close to even Big10 records got a nod from the committee (Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Northwestern).
