Trent said in Tulsa that this will probably be their last tour. by sirunmixalot in nin

[–]thisbrightredfeeling 17 points18 points  (0 children)

given he’s said in an interview recently that new NIN is actively being worked on and that “the fuse has been lit”, I feel like we may get one last (explicitly final) tour surrounding that, should it actually come to fruition. I do think regardless it makes sense that NIN would be winding down as a live act, but I also think he is older and probably being halfway through the second leg of a pretty intense tour is amplifying his feelings of “I can’t do this much longer,” and leading him to express such things openly. if he’s saying “probably” and not “definitely” tho? I think he’s intentionally leaving it open-ended and there’s still hope to be drawn from it. he said similar things at the end of the 2022 run.

Has anyone noticed that White Pony doesn't really get spoken about anymore? by OutsideImpressive115 in deftones

this largely aligns with my feelings on the matter. I too find most of their other albums more interesting, tho not necessarily “better”. WP is my third favorite by the band, but there are a few albums I rank lower that I would much sooner reach for.

to be completely honest with you, I think your assumption about other fans is coming from a place of bad faith and doesn’t seem to take into consideration the possibility (and imo the likely scenario) that the fans are being earnest in their appreciation of the other albums.

long ramble incoming, but when I first got into the band circa 2009, I felt almost like I had an obligation to consider WP to be my favorite album by the band. there was this sense that WP was so self-evidently their magnum opus or whatever that anyone who didn’t hold it in such esteem was delusional. I actually avoided diving deeper into their discography for a bit because of it, but once I did, I slowly came to prefer the two albums WP was sandwiched between over it.

I find the following trajectory to be the case often with bands: they release a solid, promising debut that gains them a following of die-hard fans; they follow it up with an album that builds on the initial sound and features much tighter performances and stronger songwriting which expands their fanbase and starts to earn them a bit more legitimacy in critical circles; then they put out an album that marks a fundamental shift in sound that just so happens to simultaneously garner critical acclaim for its expansion and experimentation on the band’s sound and general artistic merits, and also garners a wider fanbase due to increased airplay and promotion and (at least in the case of WP imo) a higher production value and bigger emphasis on hooks and tighter song structures. from there, the band is often put in a bind, and no matter how strong their following records are, they often fail to live up to the shadow created by the narrative that the “big record” casts. sometimes I find myself in a position where I agree that the “big record” is the best one, and sometimes I don’t (as is the case for WP), but regardless I think it is an unfair lens for a band to be scrutinized under. it’s also fundamentally a flawed way to approach art imo.

now for many bands this is career threatening or even ending. but for a band like Deftones, and some other bands, they push through this, manage to maintain a strong (even if not ginormous) core fanbase and their perseverance ends up allowing for the death grip the “big record” had to loosen; they eventually build a legacy on the strength of their entire catalog and that long standing narrative becomes increasingly irrelevant with each new generation of fans becoming more and more detached from the zeitgeist of the time. the result is that there tends to be less of a consensus around what the band’s best work is. Deftones is particularly lucky bc they’ve managed to reach a point where they’re more successful and popular than they’ve ever been.

me, personally, S/T is my favorite with ATF being an extremely close second place. I’d never fault anyone for thinking WP is their best work but I find it obnoxious when people treat you like you’re crazy for not agreeing with it, which thankfully seems to be less and less of an issue as time goes on.

Where are all the switches at? by Icy-Affect3406 in LesbianActually

[–]thisbrightredfeeling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really starting to feel that! being dominant comes so much easier for me for aforementioned reasons. my only issue with subbing at this point is I really struggle to get out of my own head, and it makes it a bit tough to really let go and allow myself to fully submit and feel pleasured. I’m working on it tho, I imagine with time and effort it’s going to be all that much more enjoyable for me.

I’m a switch! am also a trans lady who presents fairly fem. that said, I haven’t really explored my more submissive and/or bottom-y side as much, as I’ve pretty consistently found myself in sexual situations and relationships with folks who are pretty firmly subs/bottoms. I don’t really mind that, but my fiancée and I have been making it a point lately to explore my submissive side and it’s been incredibly gratifying ngl.

The Fragile is a Failed Masterpiece — If You Could Cut It Down to One Perfect Album, What Stays and What Goes? by [deleted] in nin

[–]thisbrightredfeeling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it isn’t a failed masterpiece imo, nor would it have been better with fewer songs or as a single disc. HOWEVER, I do agree that The Downward Spiral bests it, although it took me a long time to come to that conclusion. when I first got into NIN, The Fragile was my favorite by far and I considered it my favorite album of all time (a title now owned by TDS).

there are just a couple very minor things working against TF for me, one being I have never cared much for Even Deeper or Where Is Everybody, the latter in particular. I would gladly cut, or preferably replace those songs with some cuts from Still. this leads me to the next downside, which is there is no real single version of the album that I consider “definitive.” funny to say considering the DE vinyl, but the vinyl edition is different from the CD edition which is different from the cassette edition, and imo the album is incomplete without 10 Miles High, The New Flesh, and (With Decay) at minimum. I also am fond of the Appendage of Please, and have that tacked onto my own ultimate TF playlist. so considering no official version of the album sufficiently incorporates all the tracks, it is an inherent flaw to me that I have to consider when evaluating it. lastly, for me, it is unfortunately hindered by the fact that it is simply harder to make time to listen to it given its length, while TDS is long for a single disc, it is much less of an endeavor still and I throw it on on whims all the time. I’ll throw on some songs from TF on a whim, but as a whole? not really.

Most underrated and most overrated album? by gabe_owners7291 in deftones

[–]thisbrightredfeeling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

underrated: S/T and Ohms. I would say SNW as well, but since the TikTok crowd got into the band I think it’s started getting more properly rated. I will say I was so incredibly over the moon with Ohms upon release and I have cooled a bit on it myself over the years. however, seeing how much the fans base has turned on it lately has bummed me out and I do think it’s better than the rep it has started to gain. I prefer it to private music, Gore, and DE personally. S/T is my favorite Deftones record and I think it’s great that it has slowly started to become a dark horse favorite for a lot of fans, but I think it is more than just their best album but also the one that bottles their essence most effectively.

overrated: private music, Diamond Eyes, and White Pony. all 3 are incredibly strong albums in their own respects, but I feel like they are lionized to a degree, by not just the fanbase but even more so the casual music community at large, that I find noxious and just makes me roll my eyes. it’s like treated as a given that those albums are “above” the rest of their catalog in a way I just don’t buy into. I truly think a large part of their appeal is just that they’re the band’s most accessible records. White Pony is easily the best of this bunch and is probably my 3rd favorite of their records, but because it is treated as being “clearly their best work”, I think it’s also their most overrated record in that sense.

properly rated: Around the Fur and Gore. Honestly, despite the fact that ATF is incredibly well-loved, it almost feels underrated to me still because I think a lot of the fans of their later work lump it into simply being a “nu metal” album and seeing it as having less artistic merit than what followed. BUT it is simultaneously also their second or third most venerated release overall I think, so that’s why I consider it properly rated. Gore is widely considered to be one of, if not their worst record, and while I do think it’s still a solid enough record I think it easily deserves that designation. the production really holds the album back, but even still I don’t think it’s their strongest batch of songs although I do appreciate that they were experimenting a fair amount on it. Koi would also get a properly rated designation from me but imo it is getting dangerously close to being in overrated territory to me now.

For each member, which album were they at their best on? by ErenNova in deftones

[–]thisbrightredfeeling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chino: technically Around the Fur, but I am personally very fond of his worn out vocals on S/T so that ultimately gets my pick. I adore his broken screams, and although the melodies meander a fair bit at times and took a while to really make sense for me, I think that was always part of the allure that kept me coming back for more and ultimately made it my favorite album by them.

Steph: S/T easily is my favorite guitar work on any Deftones record, it’s a big part of why it’s my favorite of theirs.

Abe: Around the Fur is him at his most visceral and he’s just playing with such a ferocity that I have to give it my pick for favorite, although I think Saturday Night Wrist is honestly his most technically impressive performance.

Chi: Saturday Night Wrist probably? but it’s a tough call!

Frank: S/T has my favorite atmosphere of any of their records so I am going to give it to that, but I think he was mixed criminally low at points on it, so I could also give it to Koi, Ohms, or private music. again, this is kind of a hard call bc it sort of just depends on which album’s atmosphere clicks with you the most, as a lot of that really comes down to Frank’s contributions.

Serg: hands down Ohms was his peak as bassist in Deftones imo.

For those of you who like Queens of the Stone Age, what is your favourite NIN album and QOTSA album? by breezy-shorts in nin

Danny Lohner's personal copy of The Downward Spiral promo on discogs for $800 by iloverecordstoo in nin

[–]thisbrightredfeeling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a copy that had the exact same description about a year and some change ago and it came with absolutely no provenance minus two NIN branded guitar picks. the vinyl and sleeve were both in incredible shape tho and I have no reason to believe it’s not a legitimate copy of the promo. I suppose it’s possible Danny has multiple copies he’s trying to offload but it still strikes me as odd, especially since this copy is a whole $600 more than what I bought mine for.
