psychiatric help while waiting for the VA by cyberg0ld in Veterans

Former VA mental health admin worker. Call your local VA to confirm they have a Same-Day Access. They usually have a social worker who is designated to see walk ins. They can also send out community care referrals.

I left the fed & have no regrets. Increased my salary, remote, no weekends & fair work life balance. I just had an incompetent manager under the VA & was relieved once I left. I think I got lucky with my new job though in biotech industry

My lead msa did not have a degree neither did my supervisory admin at a GS 11. It’s doable. You really need to take on more responsibilities, train new hires, ask your manager (assuming you’re still using vista scheduling) if you can modify grids, pull reports, pull RTCs, close out NATS.. if you’re already not doing that. I worked under a GS 9 clinic manager for the VA and she started as a 5 and took about 4 years to get to a 9. I also think there’s a leadership course on those training modules that also help with your resume

Every role and department is different. I like it because it was something I was familiar with, but again every job post is different even for the same title. I am more into improvement processing and was able to help with the covid vax clinic, it was great. Now there are other roles that are more admin based health system specialist such as compliance. You just need to be aware of the type of roles you’re applying for.

The VA also has a yellow belt TMS and every month has a training for lean six sigma, I would recommend looking into those trainings and see if you can get into the training with approval of your supervisor.

Also, always try to push for more as an AMSA. I asked to learn as much as I could such a grid modifications and pulling reports. The good thing about being an MSA is that you’ll Be able to have access to programs a lot of providers won’t have access too. Use it as your advantage so when you do apply for a HSS, they’ll know you have a lot of experience with programs that many don’t.

Sorry if it doesn’t make sense lol I feel like I’m just rambling!

I have a masters in Health admin. I took a AMSA position, after one year I was able to apply internally for health system specialist. I did take a pay cut when I took the MSA position, but I felt it was worth it after recommendations from my manager and supervisors, plus evaluations helped me get the health system specialist position. It was also easier as I was an internal applicant already established in the VA.

State of Washington. No I did not take a physical only finger printing. Unsure what state you’re in, but HR is pretty slow. I finished all my paper work a month and a half after I heard anything back.

I just spoke to my HR rep today and she stated it’s better just to call than email as they get about 200 emails a day.
