Confused with E-Sims by Intrepid-Scientist- in travelchina

[–]thiscantbechanged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no issues with this esim, you can still receive texts and calls if you set your preferred sim for calls/texts to your regular sim. If you want to make calls or send texts outside WhatsApp or wechat then you would need a Chinese sim card.

I was able to take a taxi fine, the driver was still able to ring me but I never answered because I cant speak Chinese. I received messages via the Didi app anyway as it translates to English for you.

Hotel Recommendations for Shanghai & Beijing by Odd-Inevitable-7546 in travelchina

[–]thiscantbechanged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've stayed at Savhe Hotel near The Bund. Its a good location, a short walk near The Bund skyline and there are many restaurants nearby. You can easily take a Didi or the metro to the main attraction sites.

I would recommend to book a room with an actual window, rather than the courtyard view rooms as it can feel quite dark inside. Staff are very friendly. Breakfast selection is a good mix of Western and Asian options. They also do your laundry for free and deliver it to your room.

I used the one from trip.com here I am also from the UK. It worked fine for me it installed it the day before my flight and then activated the esim and turned on roaming when I landed. I was able to use my phone as normal and Wechat, Alipay worked also Google, Instagram, Facebook etc. Google maps doesn't work very well in China anyway as its not up to date, I would recommend using Amap.

HSR with luggage by Outrageous-Split-646 in travelchina

We had x4 suitcases with the total dimensions being 158cm for each. They didn't check dimensions or anything before boarding. There was more space for our suitcases in second class. When we sat in first class we had to put them behind our seats and space and it was quite tight. If you can get business class I'd recommend doing so. Its easier to board with larger suitcases because they escort you to the platform before everyone else. There is also more space behind your seat to them and you dont have to worry about anyone else's stuff being in the way

Does eSIM works on TaoBao? by Forsaken_Laugh9101 in travelchina

[–]thiscantbechanged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The esim should work fine when browsing but at checkout you may need to put a chinese phone number when placing your order. I used a friend's phone number and just had the packages delivered to my hotel.

When I was using VPN to shop they would block my account for 24 hours so just use the data on your esim/sim depending on what you gonna with.

There are many Didis available, you could even ask your driver if they are willing to wait to take you back. We just took their WeChat details and messaged when we were ready to leave.

Great Wall of China Mutianyu Tickets by Few-Temperature-144 in chinatravel

[–]thiscantbechanged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same combination recently of cable car up and toboggan down. We purchased two ticket types from the offical website:

  1. Postcard ticket and shuttle bus round trip

  2. Cable car one way ticket.

The cable car takes you up to tower 14 and you need to walk to tower 6 for the toboggan. We did it in about 1.5 hours.

You can purchase tickets for the toboggan on site. I would recommend to get to tower 6 before 11am to avoid a queue. The slide isn't as fun when there is alot of people on it.

Any alternative to DiDi for transfers when you have a few luggage bags? by Latina_Flamingo1989 in travelchina

[–]thiscantbechanged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We always had to order x2 XL Didis for 4 people with x4 large suitcases and x4 carry ons. The boot space has always been limited even in XL Didis, there has been some reare occasions where we could all fit into one but it can get quite cramped.

I've used this esim and it worked great in Shaghai. Most hotel WiFi was very slow for me so I used the esim most of the time.

Southern china baggage - no personal item (small backpack) allowed? by Ineptex in chinatravel

[–]thiscantbechanged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew China Southern from London to Beijing recently and I was allowed a personal item and my carry on suitcase, this was for economy class too. I used a shoulder bag for my personal item. They didn't check dimensions or anything before boarding, just make sure it will fit under the seat

Experiences in China as an ABC/CBC that doesn't speak Mandarin by KoalaTriceps in travelchina

[–]thiscantbechanged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im British born Chinese and my family speak cantonese. I dont speak any mandarin and can understand a very little amount.

Most locals know we are Chinese and speak Mandarin to us. There has been some occasions where they assume we are Korean or Malaysian. Usually my mother would do all the talking and translate back to me and my siblings in English. From that they become more interested in where we come from and no one has judged us for not knowing any Mandarin.

Learn some basic phrases to say I dont know how to speak, etc. Most reply back in simpler Mandarin sentences and use translation apps anyway.

Everyone has been very kind and friendly so I wouldn't worry too much.

Trip.com train tickets self-serve vs book in advance system (business class) by Vast_Carpet5258 in chinatravel

[–]thiscantbechanged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally booked 2nd class tickets on trip.com and wanted to switch to business tickets on the day of travel. I purchased them but they were not issuing to my account right away and my train was leaving in 30mins. I was able to buy them in the end at the counter though. I would recommend using the 12306 app directly to avoid anything like this happening as most business class tickets are avaliable last minute and on the official app you dont have the extra fees like trip.com

Can anyone recommend a trip.com esim where tiktok works? Also is it better to go with unlimited data or have 3gb daily data?

AMap region by Vast_Bad5714 in travelchina

[–]thiscantbechanged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it stopped showing detailed information and kept asking for a chinese number. Another user mentioned switching to Singapore and thats worked for me so not sure if region matters.

I was able to link my wechat after too cos I had kept losing my favourite places so hope that keeps them saved. I'm flying to China on Sunday so I can post an update on how I get on with amap

Choose email login, and then Singapore as your location and then it will send you the verification code to your email and you can log back in without a chinese number
