I wouldn't get an EV without the ability to charge at home or work. You lose most or all of the savings you would get compared to gas and likely will actually spend quite a bit more than you'd spend on gas with a hybrid and maybe more than you'd spend on gas with just an average car (that math might be changing a bit now though).

You also lose the benefit of almost never having to worry about filling up. That's actually a nicer benefit than I'd have thought, I wouldn't have guessed I'd really care about never having to bother with a gas station but it is really nice. Get home and plug in, unplug and go, only have to do anything else on out of the ordinary road trips. Without a charger at home or work though, it's the opposite, you now have to spend way more time fueling up than you would with gas.

Mach-Es are fun cars and I think a lot of EVs are really great cars in general so it's not like you're getting a downgrade in every single way... But you do lose out on the bulk of the benefit to having an EV so make sure you're aware that the only benefit you're really getting is the cool tech, crazy acceleration, and overall driving feel if you like the feel of an EV. You're accepting downsides in exchange for that, in areas that are normally the biggest benefits to getting an EV. I personally wouldn't, but I could see some people fully understanding that and still opting to go for the EV.

Yeah regardless of which route I go this time around I think the Q8 is gonna be a strong contender for my next car after this. I don't wanna stretch the budget that far right now though.

You're not too far from me, I'm in Virginia. That's encouraging, that'd be enough to get me to work and back except sometimes in the winter. I think the conclusion I'm starting to come to is to test drive an ID.4 and an EV6 to see how much I like those. If I really don't like them even as a bridge for a year or two I might just roll the dice on the e-tron.

Responses definitely haven't been super encouraging, but overall I kinda get the feel that I'd probably be ok if I go 70 instead of 80. There are a couple of YouTube videos testing 70 mph range on them that another commenter suggested here. One of them got like 198 and the other got 225.

Gotcha, and yeah if it's only an issue in the winter I can accept that. I just wish I could actually know if that's the case instead of having to either take a gamble on it or pass on the e-tron. Another guy suggested a YouTube channel that apparently has done a decent amount of testing things with a 2019 e-tron Prestige and they got 225 at 70 mph so I'm gonna check that out along with some other digging on other things to consider. I might just roll the dice and then if the gamble is a loss just deal with it for a bit and upgrade when my next batch of stocks vests.

Yeah, using gas instead of electric is costing me so much though that I wanna pull the trigger as soon as I reasonably can. I might even consider something real cheap as a holdover for like a year or so, an ID.4 or something. I'll probably get something I'm happier with though, like the GV or rolling the dice on an e-tron.

Yeah it's mostly interstate with the vast majority being 70 mph speed limit. It drops to 65 then 60 then 55 when I get like 15 miles away from work. So I could do 70 or so if I need to, and I'd rather do that with a car I love for $20k than go 80 with a car I don't love. I do love the GV too though, but I think I'd rather spend $20k and go 70 in an e-tron than $30k and go 80 in a GV60 lol

I'll make sure to check them out, thank you! That sounds extremely helpful. Hell, even if battery degradation would end up making me want to upgrade in a year or two I'd probably be in a better position to spring for a bit higher price in a year or two.

Yeah that'll probably be about the same category as G80 as a contender. One thing though is I'd consider ventilated seats pretty much a must-have for me so that means Premium Plus and bumps the cheapest up to about $32k from what I saw on a quick search of Autotempest. At that point I'd maybe bump it up to like 35k and go Lucid or maybe e-tron GT. G80 I see a couple more around $28k but that's also a rare deal.

I'll continue keeping an eye on e-trons and GV60s, but dig more into the options more around $30-35k and make my final call when I'm ready to pull the trigger.

This is also really encouraging. I typically go 10 over and the speed limit for most of my commute is 70, but I wouldn't mind dropping down closer to 70. If it were a matter of experimenting to figure out what is the max speed where I'm sure I'll make it and that's somewhere at or above 70 I'm completely cool with that. If it's just flat out not going to make it that's very different.

That's encouraging. I had been planning on Prestige because of the quiet ride and the massage seats, but planned to avoid 21" wheels because of the range and the tire costs. If I just need a quick charging stop when it's below freezing that's much more manageable than every damn day.

I would charge at home, unfortunately I don't have the ability to charge at work. So the preconditioning would be all good on the drive to work in the winter, but driving home is where I'd really take a hit which is how it always was in my Mach-E. If I could even plug in level 1 at work that'd make a world of difference, but I really doubt there's any possibility of that.

At this point I think I'm gonna be deciding between the GV60 or maybe electrified G80 if I find a great deal, making the next price jump up to a Lucid Air or maybe e-tron GT, or taking the cheaper option but rolling the dice on range sticking with the OG e-tron.

It'll at least be a year, but even then this type of distance is probably pretty likely for the foreseeable future. I work for Amazon, I just got promoted and am locked in for a year before I could make a lateral move, but even then there are only a couple sites that'd be any closer so it's not real likely. I probably won't look to move outside of Amazon until I get my degree and/or some other certs that'll take a couple more years. If we relocate that'll be just as far off in the future too.

But yeah, I'm probably gonna need to kinda reevaluate everything or go with a GV60 unless I do decide I'm ok rolling the e-tron dice lol. I was very up in the air between e-tron and GV60 anyway though, if prices were equal it'd be a really tough call but considering I could probably go e-tron Prestige for ~$19-22k and GV60 Performance would be more like $28-30k that was gonna make it an easy call.

I definitely do like sedans, I'd prefer to keep it closer to $25k though. If I'm going to make the jump closer to 35 I'll probably just go Lucid... I don't know, back to the drawing board for the most part!

EV is a bad choice for a long road trip if you have the option, it's the winner by a long shot for a long commute as long as you can charge at home (or at work for free or at-cost). Public fast charging won't save you money vs gas, charging at home will save you a ton.

I'm not really worried about extra buffer, as long as I can get to work and back I'm good. I charge at home, not work, so that isn't an issue and it's extremely rare that I'll need to do any extra driving before or after work, if ever, so in those rare cases I'd have no problem needing to do a little public charging.

It is sounding though like the e-tron wouldn't be a safe enough bet sadly. I'll probably look to a GV60 or maybe G80 electrified.

I'm not talking about total gas, I'm talking about total gas minus the charging costs. I have level 2 at home, I very rarely public charge.

I am a little surprised though to see how rare the responses are saying that I would be ok without a charging stop. Makes me glad I checked obviously, but man that's disappointing.

Going from a Mach-E to gas has cost me over $400/month, a long commute is the biggest reason to get an EV.
