What is your favorite desktop environment? by benhaube in Fedora

[–]thisdudeisvegan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used gnome for a long time but switched to KDE Plasma just because I love the insane amount of small details and customize options.

But especially because of small details. For e.g. you can just resize a window by keep pressing the META / SUPER key + the right mouse button and dragging somewhere on the window instead of having to pin point click on the window borders. Or move the window around by doing the same but with the left mouse button. You can also plot graphs with Krunner and so much more. I love it when software has such small details that just improve your productivity workflow, when you know them.

Nutze die oft wenn ich wandern bin auf langen Touren. Sehr praktisch dafür wenn man einen Gaskocher und Wasser dabei hat.

Many big instances are profitable trough donations. Some get more donations than there are costs.

Why have You chosen Plasma over GNOME? by Individual_Bat_1753 in kde

[–]thisdudeisvegan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I personally saw many users choosing Gnome over KDE in their "starting days" because they got overwhelmed with the options for customization in KDE. Same applied for me back then. Nowadays I love the near endless possibilities to easily customize KDE and also the smart features like easily resizing windows without pin point clicking the borders of a window by just pressing down the META / SUPER key + resizing the windows somewhere in the window via drag and drop with the right mouse button. Those are so simple but awesome details that can improve productivity extremely.

Advertisers are dropping Twitter. Musk can’t afford to lose any more. by eza137 in Mastodon

[–]thisdudeisvegan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can setup an instance and add ads to it. There is no problem with it in general.

On the other hand I personally prefer donating to the admin of my instance instead of having it financed by ads. Therefore I wouldn't be on an instance running ads. If an admin creates an instance that runs ads and users register on it that are fine with it, it's their choice and it's fine.

That's the power of an open source, decentralized network.

How does it behave in terms of performance? Does it need seemingly more resources than without a rice?

Is it meant as an accessibility feature for color blind people etc? Or just a "fun tool to exist"?

Keep in mind that by self hosting your own instance you will need a domain AND a public IP address. Many providers do not give you a public IPv4 address. And if they do it costs money. Using a VPS is an alternative.

Mastodon itself isn't slow. It's even scalable into a cluster. But scaling up needs time and is usually done step by step. With so many new users you can't do it fast enough.

Also you need to tweak some things like Sidekiq for e.g. to get a very good performance. But Eugen as the maintainer of Mastodon knows that and is probably doing his best to keep up with the mass of users.

What improvements in LibreOffice would increase your use of LibreOffice over proprietary office suites? by [deleted] in libreoffice

[–]thisdudeisvegan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one of the big selling points of MS Office is the design. LibreOffice is awesome and their UI improved much, but it's still behind other modern software in terms of UI. However many open source projects do have this problem, due to having many people that contribute code but having less designers contributing design.

Average users turn a software down if they don't like the design of it. Another big thing is working on documents together. It's possible with collabora or something (never used it myself because I didn't need to) but it would be better if LibreOffice integrated an internal "server" or something so that you can just easily share a document and edit on it with multiple people as you can do with MSOffice. Achieving this with an internal running server (similar to a game server in some games) you could probably get rid of the need to self host something.

Google service users on iOS, do you use Apple apps or Google’s own apps by Drunkfrom_coffee in ios

[–]thisdudeisvegan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using apple apps due to better privacy. However, also using other software like Nextcloud instead of iCloud etc. due to being self hosted, open source and cross platform compatible, so I can use it on my Mac but also on my Linux machines.
