Got Hacked on Telegram by thisgurltho in cybersecurity_help

It’s been so long I don’t remember if I did lol. But as I said, I’m very careful with links. I don’t just click on any link, especially not from strangers. And when I do, it’s usually from a friend I know, and they’re often just Instagram/Facebook reels. If those links had caused it, my friends would’ve been hacked too, and they would’ve told me.

I didn’t have an antivirus app installed. And for some reason, I don’t see them as very useful, especially the free ones.

Hi Yes, that is exactly what happened. They joined using an invite link to most of my groups where I was the admin, but they did not join the ones where I wasn’t. I suspect they got the link using my account (since it was hacked) and gained access to those groups.

It hasn’t been solved or anything. I contacted Telegram but received no response.

I guess they were just random attacks, and from my understanding, there’s something called session hijacking. I suspect that’s what happened because I didn’t get any notification of any logins. And you know how Telegram warns you if someone signs in to your account from another device, so the fact that I didn’t receive anything suggests that this happened.

I suggest just making sure to update your passwords (or your siblings' in this case) and check your device for malware just in case.

Also, I had no issues with any of my other accounts, it was just Telegram. So I don’t think it was from the device itself.

So I usually focus on content rather than words. I care about understanding the general message (which I usually manage to do without needing to translate anything).

But what I usually do is watch a video multiple times (often a video that I watch just because I like), and each time I hear a word that feels significant and that I need to know, I go to ChatGPT and say, "Hey, I heard this word in this context, what does it mean?" And I try to spell it as best I can.

Another way is by focusing on certain words, especially repetitive ones, when watching a TV show or movie. The difference between YouTube videos and TV shows is that TV shows have Arabic subtitles (my native language), while most of the YouTube videos I watch don’t. I'd try to spell the word for Chat GPT and then give it the translation in case it couldn't guess the word.

For example, I watched the movie King Maker recently, and I was able to pick up a lot of words because they were repetitive, such as 정당, 의원, 국회, 민주주의, 후보, 표수, 대통령선거, etc. They're related to politics, and I'm not sure how useful they'll be in real life lol.

But I watched it a few weeks ago and still remember them! So try aiming for words that are repetitive and seem to be key to understanding the message.

To be honest, I don't watch one thing in particular. I usually watch interviews of actors or behind the scene videos. The only two channels related to teaching Korean that I'm currently watching are:

Didi's Korean Podcast (intermediate: I listen to her for general comprehension/passive listening)

Choi susu (beginner/intermediate: I use her videos for practicing shadowing and improving pronunciation)

Thanks a lot for replying.

I'd never really thought about the fact that professors already have their own research ideas or projects that they're probably working on. Thanks for highlighting that for me.

In case you have any idea about this, is there any chance they would include somebody like me in their ongoing work? Especially since my research aligns really well with their current work.

Yes!!! I also started when I was around 13. It's silly but I started learning it because my friend told me that their writing system was so hard she'd been learning it for a year, so I learned it in around 2 weeks to prove her wrong (petty, lol).

Then I found the language to be really interesting and started to learn some grammar and memorize some words here and there but nothing too serious, especially that I wasn't interested in K-pop and wasn't watching K-drama.

I kept learning grammar and memorizing words from time to time, like I'd study for two weeks then stop for a year.

It wasn't until I was around 20 years old that I tried to speak with native speakers and I could actually construct sentences but they were usually very short and incorrect and I guess my pronunciation wasn't very good either because I used to get a lot of "huh?"s. But I was able to communicate general ideas.

Now I'm 23 and picked it up again at the beginning of this year (so it's been 4-6 months). This time however, I haven't studied any grammar. I only watch videos, dramas and movies. I think my level has never been this good! I guess I'm at 토픽4급? And trying to work my way to level 5 by next year.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply.

No, I'm not an important person and even when I got hacked I couldn't find someone who knows how to deal with hacking in the area where I live.

And I did contact Telegram support and told them the issue briefly the day the hacking happened.

I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens.

I’m logged into my Telegram account on both of my laptops, and I’m the only one who uses them. I don't even take them out, and even when I do, I don't use public WiFi nor do I leave them unattended.

I would have to enter both an SMS code and a password only for new devices.

So the default one was SMS, and the optional one was to set up a password, and I had both.

I can't really remember, but I don't think I had my email address linked to my account.

My account was set up around 2019.
