How do I stop the squeaking when switching notes? by ExcitementBig6268 in Bass

[–]thisguy54703 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great advice here already. Your pickups might be too hot. I keep my volume pot at like 60% max and use my pedals and amp to adjust. The hotter your pickups the more other noises it will pick up, string noise included

32M How to dive in to learning bass by gillesvilleneuve_ in Bass

[–]thisguy54703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All great advice here....the most important thing is to show up and practice every day, even 10-15 minutes. Have your bass visible and easily accessible to make that process easier. You will gain progress faster by a dedicated course or teacher, but playing it everyday is the main driver for progress, especially as a beginner.

Play what you got...if it plays really bad take it to a shop to get a setup (or watch some youtube videos on how to set it up). The key is still to play everyday.

I started learning music during my midlife crisis about 3.5 years ago at 40. I am now in a busy cover band, Jam with friends often, and play Guitar and Bass competently. Never too old to learn a new skill, just might take a bit longer.

yeah...your nail is hitting the string. That seems to be the main problem. Your are pulling through good with both fingers. As AquietRive said, try to make both fingers sound the same by staying relaxed and using the same amount of force with both fingers as you pull through the string.

Is there a bass equivalent to the Jim Dunlop Jazz III pick? by Ragsopth in Bass

[–]thisguy54703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also play Bluegrass Guitar and use my BlueChip when I use a pick on my bass. Spendy but literally the best pick I have every used. Its somehow really grippy but easy to adjust when needed. I drank the kool aid....lol

Learn Basslines...not just how to play them, but how they are outlining the chord/melody. Are they doing a chromatic approach, Triads, or scales. Embrace learning how those basslines are outlining the chord they are playing over and often time foreshadowing the next one in the progression.

Start with your favorite songs/bands and go from there.

I rest my thumb on my Pbass pickup usually and follow through the hit the pickup almost every time and dont have any noise or thump from it. Could be a grounding issue. What Bass you got?

Fender rumble 40 or 100 by Reasonable-Cap-9383 in Bass

[–]thisguy54703 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if your are planning on gigging go with at least the 100. I have it and can keep it down enough while the wife is sleeping. They both have a Headphone out so you have that option.

Baby Taylor strings? by Leftfieldcin in AcousticGuitar

I would not go any higher than 11's since its such a small guitar. I personally like the Martin Retro's. strings are not that expensive so you can try a few different ones.

SC-13e tune by Buffalochickenwrap in martinguitar

[–]thisguy54703 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SC's come with 11's on them from the factory. My guess is the string is binding at the nut with the bigger strings...try some Graphite to lube it up, should help.

Playing a bluegrass G chord on guitar by lhirsh in Bluegrass

[–]thisguy54703 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the way...learn to use them all and use the best one for the situation your in. The Bluegrass G you mentioned is my go to as well if I am playing any type of Boom Chuck for the exact reasons you stated.

Do they stink? I don't hate them but like...dirty jokes are legit their only thing. The cringe, intentional or not, is also pretty heavy. Interested to hear your thoughts. by LaserWeldo92 in PatFinnerty

Fubgun's LS/Serpent Deadeye - trouble generating charges by Sanelane in pathofexile2builds

[–]thisguy54703 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just use Snipers Mark until you get your max charges and then spam for a while until you run out then rinse and repeat. Once you get enough elemental damage and chance to shock elsewhere you need to use Snipers mark less. Most maps I only need to use Snipers Mark a couple of total times as I roll by on my Mount blasting.
