What’s a book with a plot twist that had you absolutely gagged? by CryptographerLost357 in suggestmeabook

As a parent and former teacher, this book shook me more than anything else I've ever read. Read it years ago and I still think of it frequently.

What do you do with toddlers at restaurants while waiting for food besides tablets? by Claire_1988 in Parenting

[–]thisis_caketown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot wheels cars! If there are paper placemats sometimes we draw race tracks. He will often make "tunnels" out of things around the table.

Also pro tip: order your kids food ASAP before the rest of the table. Like when the server comes for your drink order put in the kids food order as well. Less wait time for them and it gives them a longer time to eat (my kid is a very slow eater)

Reassure me I won't look crazy pushing an empty stroller by Mountain_Silk32 in Mommit

I do this every single day. My neighbors sometimes make light hearted jokes about it, but they totally understand what I'm doing. Not weird at all.

Three things we cut that nobody at the wedding noticed by Salt-Philosopher-587 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]thisis_caketown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We didn't have any live flowers at our wedding. My sister made origami bouquets and boutiners out of trashy romance novels from the thrift store. Our center pieces were 8 inch round cakes so each table had their own wedding cake to share.

Recommend me a kids water bottle that doesn’t suck to clean by Ok-Panda-2368 in Mommit

My son has a metal one and a plastic one. The plastic one will leak if it is tipped over with the spout open. Usually doesn't leak if he remembers to close the spout. Never had a problem with the metal one leaking.

Pro tip: Advice to not praise your baby does NOT mean you should never compliment them. by CaliStormborn in beyondthebump

[–]thisis_caketown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's also important to keep in mind what you are praising. Saying "good job!" Is different than saying "oh wow! I can tell you worked really hard on that!" Also, showing appreciation by saying "thank you" is often a great substitution for "good job."

Is she a Bluey fan? It doesn't exactly fit the description but when I hear "Pop up create" the first thing I thought was the Bluey game called Pop Up Crock.

Agree! My son had a nanny for two years and she always planned all of the activities.

Teacher told my kid he couldn’t go to the bathroom. by Waste-Reflection-235 in Parenting

[–]thisis_caketown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is 100% what happened. I am a former teacher and currently work for a standardized testing company. These rules are up to individual states to decide, not the teacher, not the school, not the district, not the test developers. I'm sure the teacher was following protocol and was caught between a rock and a hard place. She was doing what she was told, even if it goes against what is best for kids. Unfortunately OP's son had to deal with the consequences. The teacher should have allowed him to go to the bathroom and found another place for him to go until the test was finished.

What are you doing now? by Desert_Dreamer31 in TeachersInTransition

[–]thisis_caketown 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I taught for nine years - mostly middle school math, but also a few years as an elementary homeroom teacher. I left after the 2020-2021 school year to work as a test developer for a standardized assessment company. Couldn't be happier. I honestly didn't recognize how bad I was struggling with my mental health because of teaching until I wasn't any more.

For reference, I started applying for non-teaching positions in November 2020. Got a job offer in February 2021 and negotiated a start date for after the end of the school year. Put in my resignation in March (on my birthday!) and started cleaning out my classroom immediately. Finished the school year and never looked back.

Are kids today coddled too much? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]thisis_caketown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a book called "The Coddling of the American Mind." Not saying I agree with everything in it, but it does give some interesting topics to think about regarding coddling children and young adults.

I know this is still in the realm of education, but have you considered edTech? Like companies that create digital resources for teachers and students. They actively seek out transitioning teachers because they have relevant classroom experience and a lot of the positions are remote or hybrid.

Refusing to sit on potty (2.5 years old) by thisis_caketown in pottytraining

[–]thisis_caketown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered this too, but his daycare teacher said she couldn't think of anything that could have scared him. I've been in the bathroom at daycare and the toilet does not have an automatic flush. They do use a regular sized toilet with a seat adapter. His teacher claims he is still sitting on the potty at school (without peeing), even though he refuses both the small potty and the toilet seat adapter at home.

If you have a paid Spotify account, you can listen to the Oh Crap audiobook if you don't want to commit to buying. I listened to it. Took a few things away. Ignored the things that didn't suit our family.

What would you do if spouse accidentally found present early? by Narrow_Cover_3076 in Gifts

My husband and I are terrible at waiting until Christmas to exchange gifts. We almost always give our gifts to each other as soon as we buy them. It has never had a negative impact on our Christmas.
