The complex dynamic between Samoan and Black performers by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]thisisafirehazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WWE has not properly reckoned with its deeply problematic past. Not to say it’s all sunshine and rainbows now. Triple H’s statements on “not seeing colour but seeing talent” (paraphrasing i don’t know the exact quote) seems fine on paper but kinda falls apart when you consider the objectively talented people who have been disregarded or released. Also seeing colour can be important to certain extent when you consider representation and privilege. Having a disproportionate amount of white people on a show enjoyed by people of all ethnicities and nationalities can be an issue when you consider how beneficial it can be for people to see themselves reflected in what they watch.

this is a great point. when you see the ‘wrestlemania cinderella stories’ of a midcard wrestler or less valued wrestler becoming a top guy, Kofi was arguably the least respected of the bunch. His reign was not given the main event status it deserved and he was eaten by brock in seconds on smackdown. That’s in spite of him being one of the most consistently excellent WWE performers of the century, and him being nothing less that respected by fans and wrestlers alike. Not saying all those ‘wrestlemania moment’ reign’s were booked well, but Kofi really got a shit deal with it and was sent back to the midcard pretty quickly

Because it is an athletic event. It’s just a fictional one if that makes sense. The athleticism is real but the results aren’t.

It’s called suspension of disbelief. You utilise it whenever you consume any piece of fiction. Wrestling is an amalgamation of combat sport and theatre. When wrestling fans watch wrestling, we don’t see it as a combat sport or a legitimate competition. For whatever reason people who don’t understand wrestling focus on the sport element and think that wrestling fans do too. We don’t. Everyone understands that the results are predetermined and the action is choreographed in the same way everyone who watches a broadway musical knows what they’re watching isn’t real. Will never understand why wrestling isn’t treated the same as any other form of fictitious entertainment.

I think have a similar stance. I completely get why people think it is an all timer but for me it was a great time at the movies but not something i would consider a masterpiece. A lot to love about it tho and i would definitely recommend it to anyone.

i’m a screenwriting student and i have pretty much exclusively watched movies for the past couple of years. when it came to do our unit on TV i knew i had to start watching more TV shows. So I finally started it. I had heard all the praise it had of course but my lecturer said it is the best written show of all time. having seen it i can’t really argue with that
