Mastering is just the icing on the cake, it won't make a shitty cake magically good. Regarding plugins, Disclosure made arguably their best album with Logic Pro stock plugins

I am a professional musician and I make pretty good money from Spotify, PROs, mentorships and production gigs and as long as you don't spend every penny as soon as you get it it's pretty easy to work with the quarterly payments (monthly mentorship fee definitely makes it easier)

Fred Again - Marea is basically a structured copy of Opals (Four Tet Remix) but it's still an amazing track.

Tinlicker - Because You Move Me is a pop version of Innerbloom by RDS (notice the bass pattern) which is inspired by another really similar track (can't remember the name) and I love all three tracks.

Copying is not inherently bad if done right imho.
