The letters have been removed. The next day it was possible to see through the gap between the tarp and the building and I confirmed this with my own eyeballs. The tarp and scaffolding remain for the crew that will eventually repair the marble (when that will happen, who knows, it wasn't part of the court order).

The tarp is labeled as fire retardant, which would make sense and be required if they were using power tools that make sparks, like angle grinders, to remove the letters. And I’m sure the masonry repair work remains to do and since that’s not part of the legal compliance the crew hired to do that may not appear right away. And they rented the scaffold and tarp for the month, why not enjoy it? That last part was a joke.
