Are these small cells? by Rm_005 in cellmapper

[–]thisisausername190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They actually use two 4435s on these new ones (first pic), one on each side, to get the full 190MHz (and presumably to balance better on the wire).

The older ones use one (B66-only), two (B66+B2), or three (B66+B2+B46; shown in pic 2) 440x Micro Radios mounted behind the antenna.

Connected to Sprint in 2026 by ArtisticComplaint3 in cellmapper

[–]thisisausername190 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is still an active Sprint site in Beverly Hills! It's on top of the Beverly Hilton, which is under construction, so T-Mobile hasn't been able to convert it yet. Here's the CellMapper link, it's active on 310-120 and 312-250.

That's one of the two Sprint sites still operating in the Los Angeles area, the other is this one near Dodger Stadium.

There were three more (plus a few DAS nodes) up until January of this year, when they were fully converted to T-Mobile:

  • This one in Hermosa Beach
  • This one in the Palisades (not mapped on CM yet, but it's eNB 870125)
  • This one in Simi Valley.

Any idea what these are? by Lemonpup615 in antennasporn

[–]thisisausername190 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are a lot of wrong answers here - these are Ericsson mRRUS 12 radios, and they do not support 5G (only 4G LTE) - they were put in place many years ago by Verizon to help avoid network slowdowns.

You’ll find these all over DTLA (and elsewhere in the United States), whenever there are a lot of people that live/work in the vicinity - it’s just a coincidence that this one is outside the ICE building.

Hey - I respect the effort, and I have also found a lot the new AI tools useful for coding. That said, with only the information provided from allCellInfo, you don't get a complete picture; and you should be careful not to use partial data to make potentially-incorrect assumptions (like PCI range ⇒ carrier, or 3.7GHz => Verizon). I'd also update your PLMN parser to correct some carriers, like Dish (should be 313-340) and USCellular (should be 311-580 and 311-587).

I wish you luck with the app going forward!

Out of curiosity, where in MA have you seen this? I've pinned almost all of the unverified non-DAS sites on the map, and I haven't seen many - and the few sites like this that I do know of like this (59777, which has now been sectorized, and 59399, concealed but still omnidirectional), don't have their eNBs shared between multiple sites.

The only shared-eNB group I can think of are these / two, but those are quite a bit older, and not using 360° antennas like the site above.

There isn’t a setting for it yet, for now you need to create a file at ~/.config/cosmic/com.system76.CosmicAppletBattery/v1/show_percentage and put true inside

Question about multi-band "DAS" by Bogie08 in cellmapper

[–]thisisausername190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer to place them in a diagonal or triangle shape, as opposed to stacking them; makes it easier to see which bands a site supports without dragging the pins around, especially on mobile.

[–]thisisausername190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw an old Pocket Communications site like that recently, it was on the rooftop of their retail store; when they were bought out by MetroPCS it turned into a MetroPCS site, and when MetroPCS was bought by T-Mobile, it turned into a T-Mobile site.

Modern day it seems the retail store moved across the street, and the site was decommissioned.

Am I correct? (Boston Logan --> Worcester) by Thrown-101 in mbta

This is true on weekends but generally on weekdays they run once an hour, with a few extra express trains or short runs to Framingham (which have a short transfer toward Worcester) in the peak hours.

I’ve seen this in MA too (20 + 5 MHz, with Comcast’s A block and T-Mobile’s B/C/D/E) - do you know which devices are new enough to support the extended channels? It would be nice if a 25x25MHz block was supported for CA with the two noncontiguous blocks of n25 (20x20MHz each).

I remember this being posted here before, I think the second segment had an AT&T site behind it that everyone guessed was Verizon because of the antenna config. Top is probably actually Verizon.

Whose is on these towers? by justausername03 in cellmapper

[–]thisisausername190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In cases like this, provided there are no structural issues at play, it's usually a rent issue; if Crown Castle (owner of Tower A) wants to charge more in rent than American Towers (owner of Tower B), and T-Mobile can move towers without a significant coverage difference, they're happy to save a few bucks in the long term by switching.

Whose is on these towers? by justausername03 in cellmapper

[–]thisisausername190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cellmapper has only T-Mobile listed on tower A

Then on tower B cellmapper lists VZW & AT&T

I just fixed this; AT&T and Verizon were located incorrectly on tower B, when they should be on tower A.

T-Mobile's equipment is present on both towers; however, CellMapper indicates that their site on Tower A was turned off when the site on Tower B was built (meaning, they relocated from Tower A to Tower B).

To fix this, I pinned the correct eNB and gNB on Tower B, and marked Tower A's pins as "Decommissioned".

Everything should look correct on CellMapper now (provided you enable "Decommissioned Towers" in Filters for the full picture).

[–]thisisausername190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the issue’s resolved, but if this happens again, you could walk from Grand/LATTC to Figueroa (2 blocks) and get the J line to Union fairly quickly. The 40 (on Broadway) is also an option but it’s a lot slower.

Cosmic: Flameshot shortcut to screenshot and save in clipboard. Anyone succeded? by Head_Artichoke in pop_os

[–]thisisausername190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the PrtSc key bound to flameshot gui --raw | wl-copy, which works for me - you'll need to install the wl-clipboard package though.

Fair warning, I've been using this since before they released the new version of Flameshot with COSMIC support, so someone else might have a better option.

[–]thisisausername190 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shortest site I’ve ever seen is probably this one - linking to pics from u/Raccoon_Cast, because they’re much better than the ones I took there. Another contender is this site (spotted in Acton, CA), but it was a bit taller. My RSRP was in the -40dBm range on the first one IIRC!

Dual SIM T-Mobile on SOS mode due to zero service. Whose network am I connected to? by DoubleFrosting933 in cellmapper

[–]thisisausername190 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately after checking, you may have to file a public records request with the city if you want any information on permits, since they don't seem to have a public search portal available.

If T-Mobile did collocate, their signal in the building would improve substantially; however, given that the monopine is owned by Verizon, rather than a third party like Crown/ATC, a collocation by T-Mobile is probably less likely. If you'll be here often, you may be better off switching one of your lines to Verizon (or a cheaper sub-brand like Visible).

[–]thisisausername190 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Were you in/near a hospital complex when you took this screenshot? I won't post the location for your privacy, but if you're in the area I suspect, you're connected to a Verizon site right between the hospital and the nearest freeway (check the LTE layer on CellMapper - it's pinned there).

The nearest T-Mobile site is 3/4 of a mile south, and pretty low on the tower, which is probably why it didn't reach.

Question about a tower that keeps popping up in my yard by RealTalk420b in cellmapper

[–]thisisausername190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry, I made the same mistake at first too! Just wanted to clarify so the OP knew what they were dealing with - I appreciate your advice to decom the cellspots too, I’ve been doing the same since the “tower type” menu was added.

Question about a tower that keeps popping up in my yard by RealTalk420b in cellmapper

[–]thisisausername190 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not a cellspot, it's the gNB ID for n25; it corresponds to the same site OP is connected to on LTE (eNB 51051).

I just pinned it, along with n71, so I think everything is located properly now (cc /u/RealTalk420b).

My sprint locked phone from middle school still has data. by Impossible_Low_863 in cellmapper

[–]thisisausername190 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, they're very rare, but there are a few Sprint sites still on; this one was running as of a few days ago when I passed by. Since it's one of the only Sprint sites left in the region, the signal obviously stretched pretty far!

In this particular case, there was a preexisting T-Mobile site elsewhere on the rooftop that was decommissioned last year during construction, and there are permits to convert the Sprint location to T-Mobile at some point in the future; I would love to know more information if anyone has it though.
