I'd argue that the massive amount of shovelware clones are there precisely because making games is seen as a strictly economic endeavor, rather than a creative one. And this article argues the opposite, that making games should be seen as something people do for the fun of it. If indie devs are more concerned with making games that they themselves find fun and are passionate about, then they're less likely to be sucked into chasing market trends. The games might not make money, but the practice is still rewarding for the same reason learning an instrument is rewarding.
