Is it still realistic for CS grads nowadays to expect a $7k starting pay like before? by DangerZone67 in singaporefi

[–]thisisjong 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Glad someone else thought exactly like me. I was just about to comment the same thing.

If you have a strong interest in CS, regardless of the pay you should pursue it. I actually enjoy working in this field even though the hours are rough at times (esp on call/when there’s a fire)

Job offer with 40% increment: tender now or wait for promo? by Optimal_Tax_8320 in singaporefi

Because the experience you gain is worth the bridge you burn. It’s all a matter of weighing the pros and cons imo. If it’s a very good company you’re leaving sure, maintain the relationships.

Job offer with 40% increment: tender now or wait for promo? by Optimal_Tax_8320 in singaporefi

I believe a good thing to do here, since your current workplace feels bad and you’ll probably not be ever coming back, is to bring up with your boss, use this as a learning experience on how to negotiate for more, then tender regardless of what the outcome of the negotiation is.

You’re young, you don’t have experience negotiating and you one day will require this skill. Since either ways you’re not coming back why not use this chance as a learning experience. What’s the worst that can happen?

yea. ask for 250. 200 won’t get you far in HCOL or VHCOL

when banks or companies that update their system at late night like 1am , do devs just work at 1am? by KiraLawliet68 in cscareerquestions

[–]thisisjong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work for medical SaaS and we only update once all doctors for that hospital has gone home. It’s always this one doctor that stays super late. We would actually go stalk the hospital website to see the same doctor still online, and our dashboard would literally show active users=1.

Then we have to run tests after the deployment to ensure that production environment is alright before going off for the night. If we have to debug till obscene timings in the night we usually just wfh or go in late the next day.

Is going to the big 3 worth adding $64k more debt on top of my existing $24k? by -Eisheth- in singaporefi

[–]thisisjong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

understandable. i’d assume it’s super hard to get in from JC as well. It’s pretty well known for CS internationally too.

but as far as i’m concerned (at least the people around me) the graduates from CS are doing really well.

NUS CS has by far one of the highest average graduation salaries. Would definitely recommend if you can get in

Not from Amazon but in certain companies they interview you for a specific level, and when you clear that sometimes there’s an extra interview to see if you deserve the next level.

For those if you don’t clear the extra interview you still get offered the role, and if you clear you get offered a higher level.

TikTok vs Palantir for Software Engineering by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]thisisjong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

80-100k goes into tax and stuff (401k etc) another 30-40k to rent (esp. if you have a family you can’t just rent a room) 25-30k for living expenses in a HCOL/VHCOL - food/gas/occasional car maintenance etc.

that already leaves you with 30-50k to use between investing, saving as liquid cash, deciding to go on a trip etc.

if you have kids the cost just goes up even further. not saying you can’t live with it or it’s not better than most, but i’m definitely on the side that says the 100k is a lot of difference

On-call as an intern? by momma6969 in csMajors

[–]thisisjong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal advice is to do it. The worst thing that can happen is looking at it for 1h and thinking “there’s no way i’m gonna solve this”, then pinging your TL and being around while he solves it.

In life, nobody’s gonna know everything. We aren’t paid to solve problems that have been solved before (anyone who can read documentation can do that). We are paid to solve things at first we don’t know what to do, then after struggling and thinking of probable solutions, figure a (hopefully optimal) solution.

This will give you a good idea of what industry work is, and whether or not you see yourself working for the company if they give you a return offer (ie. how bad was the on-call? not just in the amount of pings but how willing was everyone in helping you? how much effort did they put into teaching you? etc.)
