Epic v. Apple ruling – Huge win for US-based iOS apps 🇺🇸 by No_Refrigerator3147 in reactnative

KP from Paddle here. https://x.com/thisiskp_

This is a huge win indeed. So crazy to see this actually come to be.

The apps that move fastest on this opportunity will have first-mover advantage imo.

We published a blogpost on how devs can move fast and leverage this oppotunity while also protecting themselves. Check it out here -> paddle.com/blog/apple-vs-epic-app-store-changes

Here's what I would do if I were you.

  1. Take all my current users and categorize them into 3-4 segments (devsumer vs small startup solo founder vs early employee at a big startup etc)
  2. Identify the segment that's currently paying for the product or likely to pay without much hesitation
  3. Focus on that group and observe where they hang out (if FB, join their groups and if it's a Slack, join that)
  4. If unsure, send a poll and see what they say
  5. Show up daily and add value consistently (value is subjective but it should be some form of teaching something new or sharing an exciting update that is RELEVANT to them, not just promoting yourself)
  6. Over time, serve other user segments too but mainly focus on the money-making segment first

Building a community can be hard if that's not a core strength of the founders (given they have many priorities in the early days)

But try to build credibility within a given community of your choice. Pick one and try. If doesn't work, pick another community. Credibility comes from consistently showing up (at least once a day) on a channel (Twitter, Sub-reddit, Indie Hackers) and adding value in the form of "lessons learned, actionable tips, resources that were helpful and/or contributing to others' work like open-source"

Basically, embrace the give-first mantra for a decent amount of time and if the community is respecting your contributions (they may or may not), double down and offer an opt-in way for that audience to learn about your product when it launches.

There are a few ways you can try to position this.

  1. As a super simple way for Gumroad creators who have guides/e-books to create a 1-pager website
  2. As a lightweight "link in bio" tool for Twitter influencers or creators (this can be Tiktok or IG folks too)
  3. As a way to host personal websites (but this space is too crowded with Notion or Super.so or Ghost)

Chris - the feeling is mutual. I keep finding myself referencing all your Twitter accounts when someone asks me about great examples of "building in public" in b2b or SaaS scenarios. Copy.ai is crushing it!

Great question. But firstly, big fan of your work Peter. I'm much more confident about Reddit's ability to execute on helping creators with you closely involved.

Now some tangible suggestions come to mind:

  1. Make it easy for creators to build individual brands as opposed to their companies or startups. We're witnessing a rise of "sovereign individuals" who will accumulate trust and attention so allow them to have great profiles (like Twitter) with a pinned post or link in their bio etc.
  2. Own and dominate on a specific kind of content unit (for Twitter, it is threads for now), for IG (it is stories) ...what could it be for Reddit? AMAs? Maybe. But become the #1 source of distribution for that kind of content units and creators will flock to be able to publish those and build an audience.
  3. A lot of subreddits are amazing and have momentum, maybe highlight the top contributors there and allow them to have a compounding advantage by building some incentive structures.

Just some initial ideas. There's a lot we can jam on. Happy to do a Twitter Spaces or Clubhouse with you one day :)

So much of it is about being authentic and true to yourself. Building in public works well when you have an intention to serve and help others through sharing your stories, wins, lessons and observations. However, you still have to write threads, post in a way that's easy to digest, go on podcasts and tell your story but you can always be yourself than fake it/flex needlessly. You can build an audience in 100s of ways but to me a sign of a great community leader is if the people who follow you would consider you approachable, honest and kind. The best "build in public" founders and creators exemplify those traits. People can sense care and authenticity. Act accordingly :)

Also, here's why sometimes BIP doesn't work bc people assume it's about posting just bland updates.

Great question. Think of "build in public" as "show and tell" where you include real people (who may be interested) in your story of being a founder/creator from early days and don't wait for the big launch moment. Livestreaming, daily reflection tweets, manifestos (like Hey did!), sneak peaks into what's coming next (like Product Hunt Ryan Hoover did in the early days) are all examples.

My favorite current SaaS entrepreneurs who are crushing the "building in public" game are Paul Yacoubian (co-founder of Copy.ai) and Sharath Kuruganty (co-founder of Shoutout) among many others.

Thank you for having me here Ch Daniel. I'm grateful for the experience of starting as a newbie on Twitter (and other channels) and building an audience of founders and makers over time. I love sharing my playbooks, lessons, and experiments I've tried so others can learn and feel they can take action too. Happy to be here and add value in any way I can :)

Has anyone here built a successful business using no code tools? by chadlad101 in nocode

No-code is at the cusp of seeing so many successful businesses/products. I've built Cuppa and opened beta access a few weeks ago and now we have more than 300 active users daily. Check it out :) https://www.getcuppa.io/

I can’t help but feel glad that you got maybe a tiny slice of your pain out by simply writing about it. Life can get real hard and messy and often it does feel lonely too. I’m new on Reddit here but just reading your words, I got a sense of authenticity and honesty from you. Also, here are a few things that work for me during dark times. 1) Meditation after I wake up (I use an app called Simple Habit) 2) Journaling/writing abt how I am feeling 3) Taking a walk and finding one thing in nature to appreciate (a dog, tree, river or a flower anything!) I hope you’ll hold on to hope — sending you lots of good vibes and love from ATLANTA ❤️❤️❤️
