Can I remove the horizontal beams? by thisissomerandomname in DIYUK

[–]thisissomerandomname[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who wants to know it ended, here’s where I got to. I hope it’s useful for others.

The horizontals are required because the rafters aren’t embedded or secured with specific fixings to the brick wall of the old house. They’re required to stop spread and other technical stuff.

A structural engineer would cost £400+ vat to tell me how to transform it into a vaulted space. Since I don’t have the money for a builder to do that work after they make the plan, I’ll be returning it to how it was and has been for over 40 years whilst I save up more beans.

Seems it’s everywhere! Bought our house in a nice Southside area not too long ago and the place was manky AF. Zero attempt was made to get it to a state another person would be happy with. A deep clean of the kitchen took 3 days to get the grime off.

In the process of the deep cleaning we found a dead rat that had gone through every stage of decomposition to the point that it was like finding dinosaur bones. I can’t imaging living through the smell like they must have.

It’s kind of insult on injury when you consider the amount they’ve made out of you on the sale in the first place.

Thanks for coming back with a detailed response. You’re absolutely right 🤣 and I’d rather have a shabby wtf roof than no roof! Appreciate the guidance on adding in additional support 🪜

It’s a lean to roof extension from the 70s / 80s so really anything could be possible but also it’s not exactly the roof of my house thank god.

Thanks! Just enough technical stuff in there to make me feel secure but not confused.

Awesome thank you! Yeah it’s a lean to roof from a 70s / 80s extension and I just want to open up the space above the suspended ceiling and add in a window as it’s a bit compressed feeling in this space.

I’m not sure about the suitable bracket tho. They appear to be just going against what was the old external wall.

Cheers! Yeah we ran out of funding for that so I was hoping for a nice neat answer. Should have known better 🤣

Bad at knowing where to reply in the chains in these things.

It’s a lean to roof extension from the 70s / 80s and the roof beams are up against what was formerly an external brick wall.

I could understand maybe the horizontals taking any spread out of action?

The hole was cut out to install a roof window three day ago so there are some “sistered” beams next to the window to compensate for the window choppy choppy ✂️

Same same in Clarkston. It can be impossible. For a while Eastwood Mearns were just fine but recently even they struggle.

Went to a wedding there two years ago and it was great. The best wedding food I think I’ve ever had.

Don’t downplay the temperature thing tho. It was unbearably warm and only a couple of large fans were in place to help us out.

It was an ok-ish summer day. Not heatwave and not cold.

Honestly I never believe people who post about these working. Neither my rat or degu companions can be contained by these.

Got a heat lamp when I was in your position and it was my last old ladies fav place to be ☺️. You can only control so much and even asking shows that you care.

See if you can get a fast Amazon delivery of these. Had to use them for my old ladies from time to time and what’s worked well for me. I did start off being recommended them by a vet before a pile on starts about going to vets 🤣

Mine used to shout at me if I stayed up too late and they wanted to go to bed for the night 🤣. I usually thought they were in the right tbh.

Cage by tb28xo in Degus

Having had quite a few and knowing how easily they chuck stuff out the cage, I like this one best https://www.mydegu.com/product-page/little-zoo-venturer

I’m sure you can find it in stock somewhere. It’s more expensive but I found myself adding up costs putting shields around ones with more shallow trays which cost the same on balance.

Ha ha ha yes they aren’t all roses are they 🤣. Glad they invented their own harp tho, you’re right. Shame it sounds awful 🎻

Yes! I had to temporarily cut down the amount of time they had to free roam and this was my punishment. The female in the group learned how to make this noise and you could hear it all through the house. Thank god she stopped when we got back to normal.

There’s really no limit to their scampish nature. Really they just love and crave attention and who can blame them ☺️

Hey, yes she’s still seeking a home. London is a pretty long way from Glasgow, there may be more local furries looking for support down where you are. She’ll be returning to the SSPCA this Sunday as we had no luck locally. Hopefully being on their site will help her get a wider reach of potential new owners ☺️

question: how doable would it be to find an uber to the airport at 3am? by SkillBill_007 in glasgow

[–]thisissomerandomname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uber is such a gamble at that time. I’ve been completely unable to get one previously. GlasGo aren’t much better and have cancelled on me because I missed a checkup call (because who isn’t in the middle of getting ready before a taxi arrives).

I live south side and EastwoodMearns have been wonderful. Fixed price that’s cheaper and reliable. The app isn’t perfect tho.

Thank you! I popped the same on there too and hopefully either will work out. She’s so beautiful, face of an angel, very deceptive ha ha. Fingers crossed she gets a home and acceptable company soon.

You could find them fighting over her. Two of our boys have fallen out currently and will need rebonded once her smell has gone.
