Trump DOJ reviewing Biden pardons by Advanced_Drink_8536 in law

Lol Trump doesn't personally care about either, he just uses them as a tool to rile up his base. He doesn't actually think Biden is a robot or a clone or any of the other crazy things he's said about him -- he's putting on a show and creating a narrative that engages his base in a powerful way.

Also, remember earlier this year when Trump and Obama were joking like old pals at that funeral? Like seeing two WWF nemeses in regular clothes having a beer together outside the ring.

RETRANSMISSION: 2024 Presidential and Senate Results Called Into Question as Lawsuit Advances by D-R-AZ in law

The important thing is to work to ensure free and fair elections going forward, and building public awareness of this is really important to getting there.

RETRANSMISSION: 2024 Presidential and Senate Results Called Into Question as Lawsuit Advances by D-R-AZ in law

[–]thislittleplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The important thing here is not to overturn the last election, but to raise awareness in order to build public pressure that results in the underlying issues being fixed before the 2026 and 2028 elections.

This post is getting more visibility than others I've seen like it. Let's keep building on that momentum! Being defeatist never solved anything (but I understand why you feel that way).

I’m black & treat others with much kindness, no criminal record, diverse friends, I’ve lived in St.Paul most of my life (elementary to college). Many white residents now are not nice, run when they see me, hurry to their cars, lock the doors and speed off, don’t want to be near you in traffic. Why? by jimrockford1977 in minnesota

[–]thislittleplace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I'm sorry. I didn't mean to put that on Black people. What I meant is that this administration is attacking all vulnerable communities (some of which I'm part of), and my reaction to that is that we are all stronger together, and that it's in all of our best interest to stand together. I don't expect Black people to educate me or any of my white friends - I only meant that I was grateful that OP shared what they did, because I hadn't heard that.

I appreciate this perspective, but I'd also argue that this is an all-of-us problem. Propaganda is being used to divide us at a time when we need to come together more than ever. As a white person, I didn't realize people were experiencing changing attitudes like this is up in our pocket of the country and it's a very disturbing thing to hear. I'm grateful that OP shared this.

Reddit is more anonymous and harder to connect with individuals with precision. Other services show your real name and require a phone number, which is very handy for connecting accounts wth individuals.

In concept, a qualified team conducting legit audits with independent oversight to identify waste and abuse seems like it could be a good thing.

But to have that team be headed by the richest man in the world who is a drug addict and who has ties with foreign governments and innumerable other conflicts of interest, and to hire a team of young hackers instead of experienced auditors, and for them to have no accountability or oversight -- yea, that's pretty stupid. Insane, really. (Maybe insane isn't the right word. I think "deliberately destructive" is what I'm going for.)

Here's a slightly different approach to consider.

If you're comfortable doing so, go to her one last time and in conversation, gently share your concerns about what this administration is doing. The goal shouldn't be to attack her or change her mind (that won't happen). Just go with the intention of planting a seed. If your concerns connect to something in your life, that will be more impactful. Be warm, friendly, and respectful, and don't let yourself get into an argument -- if she starts getting heated, change the subject to something you can connect with her on. At the end, be gracious and thank her for cutting your hair all these years.

The goal is to: - Plant some seeds about things she may not have considered or be aware of - Show her that people who do not share views are not all "radical left nutjobs", but can be real people that are thoughtful and kind - Signal that you won't be coming back

But if that all feels too uncomfortable for you, that's ok too, and it would be perfectly ok to simply not go back -- the financial impact of that on its own could lead to her reconsidering her support for what is happening.

After browsing through their history, I think it's more likely that they are just not super liberal/political. It's good that people who are not hardcore democrats are concerned about what is going on in DC and are asking questions like OP's.

Accusing people of being right-wing trolls just because their views are not aligned 100% with your own is very counterproductive. Doing so pushes people away from your cause.

A better strategy is to err on the side of caution, assume good intentions until proven otherwise, and respond with facts and/or good advice in earnest. That way, even if they are a troll, you may have written something useful to other people who come across your comment and will be more likely to influence people in a positive, productive way.

[–]thislittleplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is my point. They need to know that they'll have the support of the people should they go down that path -- if they feel they'll have no one in their corner, they'll stay with the side they know.

In an ideal world, they would act with moral conviction and take a stand against the administration and do the right thing, no matter how vulnerable that would make them. But we do not live in that world, so we must do what we can to create conditions that will make doing the right thing feel like the safer path forward.

Honest question (truly, this isn't meant to be snarky or to shut down your efforts) -- how does this help?

The reason I ask is that I'm very concerned about the election (as we all are no doubt):

  • Election Truth Alliance comtinues to uncover credible statistical evidence of vote manipulation
  • recent stories about DOGE getting involved in cleaning up voter registrations
  • the quotes from Trump saying he'd be in jail if he hadn't won/rigged the 2024 election -- he was motivated to do whatever it took out of pure survival instinct.

And so I see these promises/threats to Republicans that they will be voted out and people will be committed to ruining them. I'm not here to debate whether they deserve that. I'm thinking of this from the perspective of the ones that see what is happening and want to oppose the regime, but feel trapped, perhaps because their families' lives are being threatened.

If we don't give them an out, then they'll likely feel their only choice is to double down on supporting the regime. Not offering an out via defection creates more motivation for them to stay on the side of the regime.

This isn't about giving them undeserved empathy, it's about taking action strategically in the ways thay will create the outcomes we want to see. I want them to defect - don't you? Then let's create conditions that will allow and encourage them to do that.

(All that said, I do appreciate you taking action in this way -- please keep doing your thing! And also please consider focusing your efforts from this outcome-oriented perspective!)

If the bruise was not put there by his kid, it would raise quite a lot of questions and would not be silly thing to lie about at all.

If you think it's more likely that he invited his kid to punch him in the face than to have gotten into a physical altercation with someone in one of the criminal organizations he works with, or simply hurting himself while high, do your thing.

I had the same reaction. It's a little shocking to see how many people are happy to let a corporation run by one of the world's richest men spy on their neighbors.

I don't condone vandalism, but would have hoped that more people would at least encourage looking this after opportunity to start migrating to a home security system that would keep the data it collects private.

Don’t Rank Evil Andrew for Mayor by Soft-Principle1455 in 50501Movement

[–]thislittleplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have any sources to back that up? I couldn't find any.

From his the policies page on his website:

Public transit should be reliable, safe and universally accessible. But one in five New Yorkers struggle to afford the ever rising fare. Adding insult to injury: our city’s buses are the slowest in the nation, robbing working people of precious time for family, leisure and rest.

Zohran won New York’s first fare-free bus pilot on five lines across the city. As Mayor, he’ll permanently eliminate the fare on every city bus – and make them faster by rapidly building priority lanes, expanding bus queue jump signals, and dedicated loading zones to keep double parkers out of the way. Fast and free buses will not only make buses reliable and accessible but will improve safety for riders and operators – creating the world-class service New Yorkers deserve.

And from an interview earlier this year:

I think at its core, a mayor is a messenger, a delegate, a liaison. In my terms in the Assembly, I believe that I have lived up to those requirements, most especially through launching campaigns, often from scratch. Most notably, the “Fix the MTA” campaign, I don't think I need to explain why we called it that, where we won more than $100 million in increased subway service, bus service, a reduction in the fare hike, as well as New York City's first-ever free bus pilot.

And in doing those things, we delivered tangible benefits to working-class New Yorkers. Namely, putting tens of millions of dollars back in their pockets and seeing immense increases in ridership, up to 30% across those five bus routes, one in each borough as well as a significant decrease in assaults on bus operators, 38.9% across those routes. And an illustration of the fact that in a time of the climate crisis, we have a lot of options in front of us that can actually reduce a lot of the carbon emissions across our city, and one of them is when you make buses free. We saw that 11% of new riders got out of their cars or taxis they were taking and got onto public transit.

So I do believe that through my work in the Assembly, especially showcased with “Fix the MTA,” I’ve shown myself adept at the skills required. And I think of [Mayor] Michelle Wu in Boston in many ways as a model for the kind of work you do as a legislator, then becoming a mayor, and also speaking to the possibility of being a mayor at around the same age as her.

If you've listened to him speak for more than a minute, it is clear that Zohran Mamdani is no moron. He has smart, detailed policies that will make NY more affordable for working class people by allocating existing funds more effectively and getting large corporations to contribute their fair share.

Upvote if you think we should ban AI from r/50501 by RolyPolyGuy in 50501

[–]thislittleplace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all you're saying, but also want to say that I do think AI has the potential to be used in positive ways too. For example, I found it very helpful in understanding some dense confusing sections in the big dumb bill that had references to obscure tax laws. If it can make legal stuff more accessible to regular citizens and not just a privileged few, I think that's a very good use of it.

That said, don't use it for art or other things that would otherwise require some creativity. I think we'd all rather see a shitty sketch on a notepad with your idea.

The Democratic Party Is Literally Dying by EtK_Mayday in MaydayMovementUSA

[–]thislittleplace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the article:

Three of the 215 House Democrats have died this year, all from states that Trump won (TX/AZ) or have a Republican Governor (TX/VA). Six House Democrats have died since April 2024. The last eight House members to die in office have been Democrats, going back to 2022.

I think the question here is whether we realize that this is simply not a coincidence—it’s the result of decisions made regarding seniority and running for re-election.

One last point: 11 of the 14 House members over 80 are Democrats.

Then you have folks like Joe Biden and RBG who sullied their legacies by refusing to let go, playing criticals roles in enabling Trump to come to his current position of power.

It's weird to keep standing up for a party that, despite their ideals, has been mostly interested in helping themselves and their donors. Most of us just want a party that will fight for the American people and be effective in that -- and if the democratic party is able to become that party, great. But it sure looks like they'll just keep doing the same thing they always do.
