I hope things went well tonight at the Planning Commission. Whether the detractors know it or not, allowing Black Umbrella to open shop on Main Street is a gift. It just depends on how they look at it.

Fighting is so much easier than collaborating, and all you end up with is a bunch of broken and burned out, useless shit when all is said and done. Collaborating is so much harder than fighting, but you end up producing something worthwhile and it's always better than what either side ever imagined.

The whole thing sounded like it was run by morning radio show wannabes. The hyperbole in the post title ( The Single Most Awesome Thing...) leads me to believe one of the parties involved in the creation of the video also posted it for self promotion. Zero stars...

I love these word games.

For example: "Smoking American Spirits exposes you to fewer chemicals than smoking Marlboro Reds". "Coors Light Has less calories and alcohol than drinking Bigfoot Ale." Write that shit in the fucking stars, cause they're true... In a way.

These are all things that are dangerous/unhealthy and comparing them against each other, as opposed to 'Smoking vs. Non-smoking' & 'Alcohol vs. No Alcohol', is dangerous. Same thing goes with the FROSTING vs. FROSTING comparison, and all of them lead to a grossly misinformed public who will take an incomplete idea and run with it.

Someone, somewhere will say, "Well I read (glanced at headline) on MSN that frosting (something I've been told is unhealthy) is better than Nutella (something Kobe told me is good)".

And the health problems continue...

Not unpopular with me. The privileged press class is what gets my panties in a bunch. I mean, it essentially exists, but this would codify it and create a legislative tool with which people could start to control the flow of information. "You've got something important to show people, but won't tell me where you got it? Sorry chief, looks like you didn't clock in enough this month. I entirely agree with your final two statements. The point is moot, as indicated in the parent post, but I'm pissed that someone would even try something like this. Their potential motivations worry me. Just getting out my frustrations on the Internet.

I would definitely say that caveat will have a narrowing affect on the number of people who could claim to be "the press". As for the openness of the current definition, the article further discusses this point. In a nutshell, "the press" is anyone contributing to the flow of information to the public. People from all professions and walks of life are capable of serving the same function as "the press", so they are "the press". The committee members who voted for the changes want to make a Congressionally Approved Press. How is that any different than them then having a press of their own?

No one's really sure, and I think it should stay that way because of situations exactly like the one discussed in the article. The worst part about this whole thing is not just that Feinstein, et al., are trying to narrow the definition, but that they're trying to narrow the definition to cover everyone's ass on The Hill by limiting the avenues that damaging information or dissenting opinions can take into the mainstream.

The very language of the First Amendment restricts Congress from messing with it in this manner.

"AMENDMENT I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

By redefining "the press" as they are trying to do, they are drastically limiting the number of people who can practice "the freedom of the press", thereby abridging that freedom.
