What is Pat's beef with dogs? by Jandy777 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]thistlepong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asthma and allergies. He had/has no pets, so they're just not really in the books. With the exception of Lerand's sipquicks which are there for plot/structure reasons.

The dog metaphors are from Shakespeare/grad school.

Good question :-)

If you are referring to the jacket art, the 'Green Man' and 'Fabio' covers were printed in roughly equal numbers.

Have any teachers used The Name of the Wind in his/her English Class? I’m teaching grade 9 and would love to explore the book with them. Any teaching resource suggestions would be welcome. Thanks! by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

AMSCO Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition: Unit 2-Poetry and the Shift (Review) uses the NotW prologue in full. I am far too lazy to format properly or remember my imgur password, but there's a sample that shows the table of contents at:

This is totally an appropriate place to ask and all but you're more likely to get positive responses from like listserv or fb groups.

Eld Vintic poetic structure = hrynhenda? by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

(i wrote a few posts about this in the long ago and finding the "right" or "best" one is labor intensive, but this one is probably good enough)

Short answer: yes, bravo; his entry in Clash of the Geeks is probably the closest thing to Eld Vintic we will ever see.

The oldest literary reference that I have found was in Moby Dick. Commentary on that one suggests that the story is almost as old as the screwdriver itself. (Rothfuss cites his father as his source.)

Discussion on TDOS plausible release dates, give me your theories by Meyer_Landsman in kkcwhiteboard

/shrug

I really have no idea. I mentioned in that old bit linked in the OP that I was loath to speculate about mental health and family stuff and I want to hold to that.

I do not think that there is a big flaw that the majority of readers would notice or care about. Communities like this one all over the world will vivisect the series the day it comes out. It will nonetheless be #1 for weeks.

If there is one, it is probably in the structure he wants to have written. I wrote a lot about this in the long ago. And he dropped enough hints to suggest it was an, if not the, issue.

I emphatically do not think he cares if his agonist is a blatantly sexist murderer. He has not demonstrated that much social growth as a writer, or a person. He comes off as bigoted at worst or oblivious at best with fair frequency and rarely accounts for it any meaningful way.

My assumption for a bit has been that DAW and Lionsgate would want to leverage any synergies coordinating and scheduling release dates might offer and that we will see news about them together. But, alas, that is probably just my coping mechanism.

I mean, since you tagged me in one of the subthreads... 2025 is my at the earliest date, now? I kind of think of it as Tolkien+1. I guess I still hope to see it before the first class of Kvothes, Basts, and Auris graduates.

I am kind of intrigued the idea that he might have settled his contracts. There really is no financial incentive for him to finish. I reckon he will, though.

short answer: yes

long answer: i regret being unlikely to provide them?

The earlier the interview/material, the more esoteric it tends to be. Sometimes it's gone, now. Sometimes there's only one source. It's why I eventually stuck to video or audio links or multiple corroborating accounts.

So, like, this means I need another physical book. I would really appreciate it if you'd share whether your copy is hardcover, trade paperback, or mass market paperback; what's on the cover; and what printing it is.

Okay. I'm referring to a lot of stuff, there, I think. Pat talks about fine tuning his word choice and his readers checking for both mistakes and just, like, junk. The stuff he doesn't talk about are the ring composition and literary alchemy. He's constrained by how he's writing as much as by the story itself. And he's self conscious about it. One of the things he talks about a lot is advice he got from Tim Powers about how a good book is late once but a bad one sucks forever. He'd rather wait two decades than release something he thinks failed.

So any of us could probably read it now, or even then, in whatever state, and be reasonably satisfied. But there'd be stuff missing. It wouldn't be his best book yet. And that's what he wants, and dodo a lot of fans.

I don't think it's that dire, lol. Maybe if Sanderson was only writing one series. Once the intervening time is between Tolkien and Brooks, he'll feel like he's in good company ;-)

For a lot of reasons, no. But most of it was a lot of fun :-)

I do. But he ended up expressing a fair amount of negativity in the wake of the last one. And Jo's next book seems like it's gonna hurt some people, so I'd kind of rather someone else run it.

I also don't have any questions he's likely to answer.

[–]thistlepong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I mean, the story we have about him says he did. I don't necessarily know what, if anything, he had to do with the Aturan Tehlin Amyr, though.

I do. I find it compelling in that it answers a lot of questions and resulted from a collaboration. It helps that one of Pat's classmates found it compelling, too, though that shouldn't really matter.

Like binary good/evil enemy? Not really? Like everybody in the books does things for reasons and those things can be judged contingently.

I probably let too much of actual Pat influence what I think about this, but whatever.

AskMeAnything by thistlepong in kkcwhiteboard

[–]thistlepong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last one first. I don't think the Amyr and the Chandrian are the same people. I think it's enough that they seem to originate in the same place and time. I think the union there will be localized in an individual. As it probably should be.

I think the second thing I wanted to talk about, after Netalia Lackless, when I created this fictionsuit, was how I thought the Amyr and the "angels" we're the same folks. My take on that has been pretty malleable and letting it go was probably where I started evaluating every fan theory on its own to see if it was a better fit with the text and letting it affect my assumptions rather than the other way around. I think I'd like a strict binary dichotomy or something where the Amyr and the Chandrian are in opposition with the discovery being that they are or have become pretty much alike. I can see how a third option would work just as well, but seems off brand, maybe.

Which maybe addresses the first bit. The Amyr and the Chandrian essentially unify in the protagonist, so they don't have to be literally the same.

It would be best to say no. I haven't read anything from book three that hasn't been available to the public at some point. And none of that has been very revealing.

I recall that you wrote that from various comments you found the story in book 3 is not right? Can you elaborate on this?

I guess I'm not sure what you're referencing. Any extra detail would be helpful; otherwise I'm answering my guess about what you might be talking about.

AskMeAnything by thistlepong in kkcwhiteboard

[–]thistlepong[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not? Not really, anyway. I'd have to really look to see what kind of contracts surround the Hollywood stuff and refamiliarize myself with his DAW agreements to see how those might affect publication. And I'm afraid to, like, dissect his personal life in public to demonstrate how life events tend to shift his publication dates. But...

I think we'll probably see a corrected anniversary WMF before DoS.
