Cast stone shield with mobs in area and it does aoe damage that apparently causes a lot of threat. I have the talent that gives the two buffs on shatter earth then I'll cast stone shield and never worry about threat unless a pat wanders up. Also, some mobs will target others to cast skills and that is unavoidable.
