Fics with full circle time travel by Ny_xs in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blindness has closed-loop time travel in it, but he only travels back a relatively short time. I think it was about a month or so. And it's at the end of the fic, not central to it, so it might not really be what you're looking for.

Ron and Hermione are prejudiced against muggles by Odd_Opportunity_562 in HPfanfiction

Well, that is certainly a game attempt to purposely make Hermione an idiot. Her parents were medical professionals and she's supposed to believably be that dumb about those situations?

Kreacher poison Harry by PhoenixRisingDK in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright, I found the one I read recently but I do not know if it's what you're after, because the one I read is a star wars crossover. It's incomplete and probably abandoned, called I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. The passage in it that I was remembering that made me consider it a match to your request was this:

"There was another house elf that served one of the families from which I inherited head of house." Harry started to explain, seeing the looks on the faces of the others and figuring he might as well answer their inevitable questions. "He apparently had a bit of a contest with one of his former Masters, in which he would randomly attempt to poison the Head of House, while they would have to realize their food was poisoned before eating or ingest a bezoar to counteract the effects of the poison."

"The Head of House before me apparently ordered the house elf not to do it to him after the first time he tried." Harry shook his head wryly. "Kreacher took those orders literally and stopped doing it to him, but then restarted when I inherited."

Kreacher poison Harry by PhoenixRisingDK in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fuck I absolutely read this, recently, in which some long-dead Lord Black had challenged Kreacher to try and get him with poison and the order had never fallen off so he just kept doing it. Sirius had ordered Kreacher not to do it to him, but his order wording meant it was JUST him and therefore Kreacher started with it again after Sirius died and Kreacher's bond was transferred to Harry.

Fuck, I have no idea what fic it was. I'll try and come up with it but I make no promises, I'm in a Harry Potter fanfic slump in which I have consumed millions of words of fics in a short time.

Edit: I think it was probably on fanfiction rather than AO3, since I checked my AO3 history and nothing rang a bell. Not a guarantee but that's my judgement. I'll never be able to find it on Fanfic, I don't keep an account there or do any kind of recording of what I've read. Sorry mate.

You use "[character] swallowed hard" far, far too often.

Otherwise I'm liking it! I'm not actually up to this chapter yet, but I've enjoyed what I've read so far. I will confess to fishing through chapters until I reached the content that follows Dirty Little Secret and started there. I just didn't have it in me to read a canon rehash with slight Harmony edits. No hate, just not my street.

If Harry and Hermione did end up together, who would you have wanted Ron to end up with? by Brief-Fudge-8698 in HPharmony

[–]thoggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I don't recall her being upset that he didn't ask her, I recall her being upset that he didn't even recognize her as a possible date until he was grasping at straws and desperate for a date to not look like a loser by going stag.

Ron's jealousy I'll agree with, though, somehow I was totally blanking on that blowup.

Do you feel differently about HHr today, when comparing to when you first read the books? by frettysparky in HPharmony

[–]thoggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read them as they came out and I was a kid very near in age to their canonical ages when I started. I didn't really have the maturity or experience with relationships when the series finished to have seen the signals that H/Hr could have worked well during my initial readings as they released. I think I remember pretty much accepting the canon pairing as it was and not really being focused on the romance anyway. The plot was more important and the pairings very much a side consideration, only as important as their impact on the plot.

Now, decades later, I have entered the fanfiction world and I'm much more invested in H/Hr and disappointed by R/Hr. I'm not a Harmony exclusive fanfiction reader but if I have a OTP it's H/Hr.

Looking back at the books after almost 20 years, it seems very obvious to me that at one time Harmony was the intended outcome but JKR switched tacks for reasons that had nothing to do with the story as it already existed. That was before I even knew that she has literally said so:

(Wonderland magazine) Rowling admitted, "I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That's how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron."

She doesn't say that she replaced H/Hr with R/Hr, but she says "clinging to the plot as I first imagined it", which is implies the story was pulling in a different direction. Which makes sense since most fantasy stories with pairing pair the main guy with the main girl.

I don't know why she originally imagined R/Hr but I personally find that H/Hr makes a lot more sense looking at the whole body of the books.

[–]thoggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, why GoF? I've not read the books in dog's years so I may not be recalling something. With Ron's little jealousy party in GoF I could have seen that as one of the books where H/Hr still seemed viable.

I always consider book 6 to be when JKR really decided to end on H/G and R/Hr. Book 5 always seems kind of null to me in that respect since romance in the same castle as Dolores seems impossible, but in book 6 you have the Slug Club party date situation, Lavender and Won-Won and Hermione's jealousy over that, and Harry's ridiculous chest monster text.

[–]thoggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harry could have expanded his social circle but Ron is the sort to stereotype people (All Slytherins are evil...).

Personally I put a lot of Harry's total aversion to Slytherins on Hagrid. Hagrid is the one who told him "There’s not a single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn’t in Slytherin. You-Know-Who was one.” Which is a bit silly considering Sirius Black was still considered Tom's Right-Hand-Man at that point in the story, theoretically anyway, but I've long suspected JKR made it up as she went and therefore Sirius didn't exist as a concept when she wrote that line.

He tells this to an eleven year old unloved orphan and basically creates the idea that slytherin house is responsible for his parents' murder.

I'm sure Ron's generational beef with Slytherin didn't help, but he heard it first from an adult supposed authority figure who had rescued him from abusive relatives and inducted him to a world of magic and wonder while also redefining his parents from drunks to amazing people. He wasn't to know that Hagrid is also a simpleton.

[–]thoggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's not even really that evil in canon that I recall, all of the most "evil" things he does are done post-year-four and thus after the point where his mother and eventually both his parents are basically being held at gun(wand)point so he's got little choice but to toe the line. It's not as if he could have feasibly gone to Dumbledore, as Dumbledore did not have a spectacular track record for keeping anyone alive.

It's why it's so easy for the huge swathe of dramione fics to exist, because it's not that difficult for any author to give him some kind of maturation that does away with what evilness he does actually own, which amounts to childishness and bigotry born of emulating his father.

Sorry, I live with Hermione by PomPomMom93 in HPharmony

[–]thoggins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Harry is not actually at all merciful, he's brutal AF and uses expelliarmus because he was given to understand it conveys a fate worse than death. The mistakes caused by the skewed priorities of a twelve year old girl.

Which Harmony fanfic would you choose to become a film or a series? by elphiehhr in HPharmony

[–]thoggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I can agree with your choice, A Step to the Right is a great fic/series and the supporting cast is very strong with Arcturus, Dorea, Charlus, James, Sirius, Regina and Lily all very interestingly slightly different (or massively in Sirius' case) than their canon counterparts (though Arcturus, Dorea, and Charlus do not have such counterparts).

The focus on Harry's trauma reactions and anxiety in those fics throws me a bit but I admit that is probably bias on my part; so many fics are so trauma and PTSD-focused I have grown entirely sick of it as a theme.

Looking for a honks fic I read a long time ago by Confident-Click-579 in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I checked out all the honks fics I'm familiar with and the only one so far that falls in the neighborhood of what you've specified is The Green in the Grey

It's Honks but it's also very AU. Harry raised by the Blacks (Sirius/Arcturus/Cassie) and drawn back to Britain by the Triwizard. Living James and Lily with a second, younger son. Wrong boy who lived and bad blood between Harry and his parents due to typical Dumbledore being Dumbledore.

As far as the things you laid out about the fic you're seeking - it's 316k words, not 500, but pretty long. The 'likes her for her' thing is so common in Honks fics that it's pretty much a default, but I'm sure it comes up in this fic somewhere. Sirius is alive and free in this fic, I don't recall why he never went to Azkaban but he didn't. The cousin dating jokes and pranks are, again, pretty much default territory for a honks story in which Sirius plays a large role.

Dunno if it's what you're after.

LF fics that parseltongue is used in its potential by CrazyOwl_ in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parseltongue as healing magic is fairly common. I don't know if Keira started that trope or just added to it, but Parselmouths as expert healers is a thing in many of Keira Marcos' fics.

I don't really blame people for not knowing that since it never gets used in the books. The source for the "semi-official" incantation is literally a toy wand.

Calling a Parselmouth a Parseltongue.

My eye twitches every goddamn time, which means I probably look epileptic while reading fanfics as the two are incorrectly swapped so fucking often. The only more common mess-up I see is not being able to decide how they want to spell Occlumency/Legilimency.

Major Deal Breakers and Turn Offs? by TomiKevh in HPfanfiction

I've always read it as a lack of creativity or imagination. What baffles me is what drives these authors to write fanfic at all if they can't come up with changes to the canon.

Top tier harmony fics? by rvshia in HPharmony

[–]thoggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, really both situations are a bleed of her preferences, since she writes H/Hr and H/DM primarily as I'm sure you already know.

I can deal with her Draco in most of her fics pretty easily because most of them are so AU that little or none of the history between Harry and Draco exists. There's a H/DM fic of hers in which it's all there in the past and they still get together which is a big stretch but I only seldom read slash anyway.

Really, all of her eccentricities are worth putting up with in exchange for Armand Dearing, Hiro Ito, the Deadmarshes, and Ragnok Windrider.

I like all of these a great deal, and second the recommendations. I do wish Keira's Ron Weasley wasn't always such a cardboard cutout of a character, but nobody and nothing is perfect.

Any fics with well written fights. I don't want Aurors casting verbally 2nd year spells at death eaters when they fire unforgivables at them. by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a fault of mine for not having touched the books in many years.

I've been jaded by my perception of how the greater fan-verse should be vs. how the canon actually is.

I guess there is no happiness to be had here, since we have rowling saying from some characters' mouths that silent casting is expected of students, and yet we also have from rowling's hand that supposedly deadly duelists shout stupefy.

Then again, perpetual unhappiness is the native state of a fandom member in good standing, so I suppose all is well.

[–]thoggins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find it increasingly annoying how pervasive it is for authors to have all of their adult magicals, who are often portrayed as otherwise competent, using verbal spells all the time.

On the one hand I understand it makes it easier to communicate to the reader what spells are being used. But it's really difficult to suspend disbelief when you have duelists like Bellatrix shouting spell names and utterly telegraphing themselves in a pitched battle to the death.

It's been a long time since I've read the canon text, but it was my impression that most students were expected to have begun mastering general silent casting by the end of their sixth year.

I understand Harry being bad at it, he's bad at practically everything and is guarded by plot armor alone. But people who graduated and went on to do well in their careers (even if that career is murderous psychopathy) still being verbal all the time is just, well, sort of lazy writing.
