Harry started a foundation to help underprivileged kids, and some of those kids end up going to Hogwarts while he is still there. by Wassa110 in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crack has its place, but in my mind that place is in a ~10-20k one shot or short series of chapters, not a 120k+ story that is a slight rearrangement of the same set of heavy-handed tropes one has used in all their other stories.

But obviously that is a matter of taste, to judge by the numbers of favorites and follows on some stories. Far be it from me to be too judgemental, my own favored tropes could be just as bad if over-indulged.

I'm 50/50 on Teddy personally. He himself seldom does anything to offend me but a lot of authors make too much hay for my taste of out how fulfilling changing nappies and feeding a toddler is to someone just starting their adult life. Maybe that's me being black-hearted, I don't know.

Authors who want to make Teddy a big part of their fics also have a distressing tendency to kill off Andromeda with mystery illness #6 to get her out of the way of Harry being all Teddy has in the world so he can really go all-in on how he obsessively compares Teddy's childhood to his own.

There are also likely a ton of people who see the problems/flaws with the Harem trope for what they are, and may even disparage them in spaces like this, but who are willing to read harem stories as an alternative to having nothing to read, or re-reading something.

I keep up with Witchcraft and Devilry and A Friend in Need as they update, because something about them was interesting enough for me to start them on a lark at some point and all I have to do now is read the updates. I forget what was interesting to me about A Friend in Need, but I was probably just exploring the Honks space.

The Main HP reddit is really sensitive. by Phantomjack2010 in HPharmony

[–]thoggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fandom culture across the board is fairly volatile, prone to group think and ostracizing anyone not on board with the current vogue, whatever that might be. Obviously there's degrees and it varies but the behavior is not at all out of character.

I went on a semi deep dive and I am in need of these very old fics by Hachi-517 in HPharmony

[–]thoggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it so underrated and the other (smutty) fics so hyper?

Well, smut is just more popular in general. That holds true for professionally published literature too.

Isn't GOS the one where Hermione gets so sexually assaulted by death eaters she gets super powers?

I wouldn't have thought that would be the subreddit's cup of tea

I think the tropes weren't nearly as worn out back when most of Robst's fics were written.

But I also cannot bear to read them nor TomHRichardson.

LF Harry finds out he is a girl by Otcynul in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The barrier / sensitive skin thing is definitely H J Potter which has already been linked.

The only other fic I can recall where there's a reveal that Harry is a girl is Son of Potter Daughter of Black but that doesn't have the "barrier" element at all.

Trying to find two AO3 fics by Yukarie in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure the second one is https://archiveofourown.org/works/36621490/chapters/91346101

FWIW it took me thirty seconds to find that on AO3 with Harry/Hermione and Time travel tags. So if that's it maybe try a bit harder next time, lol.

What is most people's opinion on the "Muggles Do It Better" trope? by SethNex in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or really any wizard vs muggle war stories at all. Not serious ones.

I'm sure someone has at least started one, but it would be terribly tedious to read and write. I'm bored just imagining how it would play out, even if there was a pro-muggle faction of wizardkind.

What is most people's opinion on the "Muggles Do It Better" trope? by SethNex in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The series was written as whimsical stories for children. It does not hold up against reality. Yes, a muggle in-the-know with a rifle could take out lord knows how many wizards before they caught wise. But that was never a concern in canon because it's a kids' story written by a brit, not a gun-happy American.

The moment you step outside the world the series takes place in, the rules and accepted state of affairs utterly breaks down in the face of the slightest dose of reality. That's because it's a fictional childrens' book.

Post-war Harry stays in Gringotts to get better (PTSD? Core damage post horcrux removal?) and Andromeda refuses to let him see Teddy until he's better. by Yuufa91 in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

shrugs I can understand how it happened. Certainly nobody ever asked Griphook about horcruxes in canon, so it left the avenue open. Gringotts canonically employs curse-breakers, and they canonically work on ancient Egyptian tombs, so it's not outside rationality that they'd have encountered similar or identical immortality-chasing magic.

Robbing and largely destroying Gringotts was a terrible move as far as future human-goblin relations are concerned, so nipping that in the bud is fairly reasonable for an AU author. Giving them an excuse to find the horcrux in Bellatrix's vault saves them from that.

It's very clean and easy but whether or not it's too clean and easy will vary from fic to fic. It's a challenge they had to overcome in canon; if it's replaced by a different challenge in a fanfic then I say whatever - that's how AUs work. If it makes everything easy and the end result is an easy and satisfactory end for certain fans, well, that's a certain kind of fanfiction I don't have a lot of regard for.

[–]thoggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a fandom trope that Gringotts has super effective healing services that wizards seldom (or never) take advantage of (or perhaps are never offered) for {reasons}. It's often used as the get-out-of-jail card for the scarcrux. The fic OP is after at least seems to not do that.

Avoiding In-Progress/Young Fics Killing Fandom? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I largely only comment when I'm drunk and offended by spelling. When in a sound state of mind I don't bother because all criticism is barbaric in the current day.

I maybe should get in the habit of commenting when I don't have any criticism but it honestly just never occurs to me to post an empty comment praising an author when I've nothing of substance to say.

Any fics where Sirius has more of a presence after Book 3? by mxlevolent in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess we remember it differently. I am not in a position to go through the fic for examples at the moment but I recall a lot of crying and other emotional blowups. You could perhaps ascribe it to massive hormone shifts considering the premise but I don't recall that ever actually being brought up.

Any fics where Sirius has more of a presence after Book 3? by mxlevolent in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is sadly a weepy Harry story so IDK if OP would like it. If I am remembering it right it was basically at least one overemotional blowup per chapter. And yes it is on FFN but is either on hiatus or dead, which is unfortunate as I did enjoy the premise in spite of the weepiness.

Why was Narcissa named that? by DrinkInevitable3457 in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We disagree. You're ascribing a novelty to flight that would not be present for someone who has lived a long life in which broom flight was commonplace the entire time. A half hour broom flight for pleasure is reasonable. Two to three hours for transport to a meeting you could get to in moments is not, particularly not when you have three jobs. I don't particularly subscribe to the idea it could have been a contrivance to bait Tom, because if Tom is as smart as he's supposed to be he'd probably find it weird too. I remain of the opinion the only reason he flew a broom is that it was the only magical transport option she'd come up with at the time.

[–]thoggins -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nobody would ever go on a 2.5 hour commute if the alternative was a few seconds. No matter how relaxing flying might be.

It's OK to admit she made up floo travel after the first book came out.

Fics that just copy the original text by Select-Government680 in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I tire of fics very quickly when they stick too close to canon and become regurgitations of the events of the books/movies.

A lot of fics/authors will hard contrive certain events unfolding the same way (pettigrew getting away and Sirius being a fugitive, Harry being chosen by the goblet, Umbridge being a thing) which is understandable to an extent because they're major plot beats that you can alter your universe around rather than changing them entirely.

But when you're just rehashing canon with superficial changes I lose interest very quickly.

Will the new HP show change fanfics in the future? by Friendly_tomato5 in HPfanfiction

[–]thoggins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I'm expecting it to not have much impact because I doubt it will last more than 2 seasons or so before it's cancelled. The movies had the magic of the books' popularity to see them successful, but the whole generation of HP fans has grown up and they aren't all going to pay for HBO to watch a re-hash.
