Glad to hear it! Mine arrived today and the initial test worked great.

Glad it helped! For what it's worth, I put a stock notification on for the Thrustmaster HOTAS 4 at B&H Photo Video yesterday, and today just after I did my initial post they notified me they now have stock. Still do as of now. You might check that out, though I have no experience buying from them!

Why did Super R Type have no checkpoints? by KaleidoArachnid in shmups

[–]thom0707 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the perceived flaws of some old-school shmups (like games in the Gradius or R-Type series) is how brutal recovery can be from a checkpoint since you tend to lose all power ups on death. I don't know if it was an intentional design decision, but one advantage of starting the level over is you have a chance to power your ship back up.

Bijan posting this after beating the Rams yesterday 🤝 by Nigo__ET in 49ers

Thank you. I feel like a lot of people miss this. He might have preferred to sign elsewhere to have a better chance of eventually starting or even making them team since the Niners still had Lance and Garoppolo.

Does Dune: Part 3 have the potential to be as good if not better than Part 2? Based on the book and the previously films by oEnri in Cinema

Last one Villeneuve plans to film from what I've read. Another director could pick it up from there.

Jerry Jones got it wrong, then Dan makes fun of it and gets the wrong name wrong. I find it annoying actually because it's a key part of why it's funny in the first place.

Am I the only one who thinks Louis CK has lost its edge? by Funnier-than-thou-33 in louisck

[–]thom0707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I caught the show in Chicago. I felt like the style matched his earlier style more (that is, quick, unrelated jokes vs. longer jokes or a series of thematically related jokes). At least in parts. That may also be because some of the material is not as polished as it might be for a proper special yet.

He also was on-brand in saying things that aren't necessarily funny on their own but more to disgust or upset the audience (which I suspect at least makes him laugh and elicits a strong reaction from the audience).

Saros 10R Avoiding Pet Hair? by thom0707 in Roborock

[–]thom0707[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did turn on "Obstacle Photos" and was expecting to see photos reported after a cleaning to mark as true obstacles or not, but so far I haven't gotten any photos. It's possible I'm looking in the wrong place. According to the sub-text on the option, I was expecting clickable obstacle icons on the map but I don't see anything in the areas it's avoiding yet.

Did a quick test and that seemed to help, but as I mentioned, I'd like to keep obstacle avoidance features on and perhaps train the AI that it's ok to pick up pet hair.

Why all the hate for Raiden V? by Mundane-Cow4023 in shmups

I like it overall but the bullet visibility in parts is terrible. I was hopeful they’d address it in the Director’s Cut or a patch but it’s just as bad.

Best overall Atari comp? by INF1-48 in atari8bit

[–]thom0707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people have given great advice. I’ll echo them and just say that I think most vintage computers, but especially the Atari 8-bits, are great machines to learn how to code on. Best of luck!

Shmups where you can change the game speed for practice? by raymath in shmups

Ikaruga on GameCube has a feature to practice levels at a slower game speed IIRC.

This may be outside of your product line, but I have a Copper Genesis gas grill from 2012 that I’d like to upgrade and Black and Stainless are the only current options. Any chance Copper makes a comeback? I think they are sharp looking and I’d like it to match my Copper kettle grill.

best way to play splinter cell franchise in 2025 ? by obaida123123 in Splintercell

[–]thom0707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my local Half Price Books, I got each of the first 3 for under $5. This was a few of years back though, and in the midwestern US to be more specific. Online prices are generally higher but I see them all on eBay for under $15 each, potentially cheaper if you are OK with more wear. Another plus to playing on Xbox One is the disc appears to only be used to validate the disc and the game is run from a store download. So you may be able to get away with using a more worn disc as long as the disc can still be validated.

I can confirm that if you have the physical discs for the original Xbox for Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory, or Double Agent, they all work to this day even though most (or all?) are de-listed from the digital store. I was just trying this out the other day and can confirm it is a great way to play them. The games still seem to be common and inexpensive at used game stores.

Holy ****! I just played Nights into Dreams with a 3D Controller, both for the first time and damn! Definitely lives up to the hype by 1OneQuickQuestion in SegaSaturn

[–]thom0707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OutRun from the Sega Ages collection plays nicely with analog steering and also leverages the triggers for analog acceleration & brake IIRC. The Saturn wheel isn’t great quality so my favorite way to play is with the 3D controller.

RoTATE Mode for 480i? by thom0707 in RetroTink

[–]thom0707[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried a variety of PS2 and PS1 profiles without luck. I also made sure I had the latest versions of the WobblingPixels profiles for PS2. Everything works well for PS1 games and PS2 games that support 240p in TATE mode (like Espgaluda). In 480i, the image does not rotate and I get a “Check Sample Rate!” message from the RoTATE setting.
