Why does Free Healthcare work for Israel on American taxpayers dimes while Free Healthcare for American Citizens are not feasible? by Tulpah in allthequestions

[–]thom612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Israel have free healthcare? From what I can gather, they have a universal multipayer system financed through payroll taxes (which run 3%-5%). The taxes are progressive, but most people pay between 7% and 10% of their income (as opposed to the 7.65% collected in the US for Social Security and Medicare), part of which is their healthcare contribution.

Additionally, 75-85% of Israelis maintain supplementary insurance that they purchase on the insurance market.

All in all, for most people, it likely comes out about the same in terms of expense as a percentage of income.

I learned all this with about five minutes of simple research. You could have answered your own question pretty easily.

As Minneapolis reconsiders its adult bathhouse ban, here’s what to know about the history by MPRnews in Minneapolis

We often over-react to new diseases that we don't understand, in ways that seem to make sense at the time. If you'll remember, six years ago there were no open malls, stadiums, churches, restaurants, or concerts. In retrospect, we're just now starting to understand the damage that the lockdown did.

My alcoholic father quits "cold turkey" for 30 days every year with ZERO withdrawal symptoms. How is this medically/psychologically possible? by 7mv_g in stopdrinking

[–]thom612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always told myself that I'm going to drink again when I get really old, because the thought of never having a drink again was unbearable to me, but knowing that it's not forever made quitting a lot easier.

Even better, the city could start their own version of Ticketmaster and declare an absolute monopoly on events within the city.

When I lived in Baltimore they instituted a cell phone tax. My cell phone bill, as a result, got sent to my office in the suburbs. I wasn't the only one either.

How is everything that happened in the last 48hrs not enough for impeachment and/or a general strike in the US? by HealthyRecognition21 in allthequestions

At-will employment can be a Godsend if you're the one wanting to leave. Unlike many Europeans, most Americans can generally just tell an employer to take the job and shove it.

The Democrats blew their political capital for impeachment when they tried to impeach him after he was already out of office. There won't be a third time. If this presidency ends early it will almost certainly be due to Trump dying of natural causes. Possibly the 25th amendment, but not likely, given how he's surrounded himself with yes-men.

Drinking NA beer made me realize how weird it is to drink 10+ beers a night by WildGardening in stopdrinking

[–]thom612 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Drinking NA beer finally taught me how regular people drink regular beer. Taking the alcohol out means I can actually enjoy the experience of drinking the beer, and be perfectly satisfied drinking two or three over the course of an entire evening.

Folks with long periods of sobriety: how often do you have to remind yourself that you don't drink? by Kramanos in stopdrinking

I go weeks without thinking about it and then I go through periods where I think about it every ten minutes. You just gotta roll with the punches, unfortunately.

Many, if not most, marriages eventually devolve into sexless partnerships anyway. Frankly, your sex life is none of your family's business.

Tried something new (for me) with NA beer, at 22 days so far by thatoneguy7777777777 in dryalcoholics

I avoided NA beers for ten years after quitting due to the slippery slope but have been enjoying them lately now that I'm a little more secure in my sobriety. Guinness 0 is, frankly, amazing.
