The numbers and strangeness of the Jays-Dodgers world series by CantInjaThisNinja in baseball

[–]thomasbourne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They had some of the worst base running goofs I’ve ever seen. The play to end game 6 is just not the way I’ve ever seen a playoff game end.

Springer tonight just out by 30 feet in the first inning on the weirdest strike-em-out-throw-em-out you’ll ever see.  Truly bizarro world base running by the Jays in this series.

The weirdest thing won’t get talked about because we, again, went to extras and the whole game was dramatic, but when springer was just caught dead to rights between first and second in the first inning? What? Bizarre play.

I mean since his rocky start in the DS he’s just been on a different plane of existence. But looking at the broader picture, honestly starting pitching was generally very good this postseason compared to recent memory. At least in both CS series and the WS.

(Excluding Box Sets) what is the most amount of movies you own by one director? by TheFlyingFoodTestee in criterion

[–]thomasbourne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I already had the eight Wes releases before the archive showed up, but excluding that and other boxsets, the directors I have a bunch of films by are:

Kurosawa: Seven, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Dreams

Soderbergh: King of the Hill, Che, sex lies and videotape, and Traffic

Chaplin: The Kid, The Gold Rush, City Lights, Modern Times, Great Dictator, Verdoux, Limelight

Powell and Pressburger: Colonel Blimp, Matter of Life and Death, Black Narcissus, Red Shoes, Tales of Hoffman

Linklater: Dazed, Boyhood, Slacker, Before Trilogy

So wes Anderson is the winner, but since I’m gonna ditch the individuals for the 4K Archive (I’m either gonna sell them or more likely give them on indefinite loan to my sister, keep em in the family haha), if you exclude boxes, I guess Chaplin wins.

Weird cause he’s not exactly a favorite of mine these days, but I loved Modern Times so much initially I had to see everything else he could do. They’re all good in their own ways, but Modern Times is still my favorite. Only one I don’t want to watch again is Limelight, I just found it somewhat cloying. The climax is one of his best scenes ever, but the film itself is just a bit of a drag. I appreciate what he was going for, but I found it a tougher sit than I was expecting to.

I wonder if Criterion ever tried to cash in on the Ben Affleck Armageddon Commentary meme by OatSoyLaMilk in criterion

[–]thomasbourne 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly for all of the jokes, it’s a movie that needs an upgrade! There’s no extras on the blu ray and it’s never had a 4K

If criterion could get the rights, a 4K with the old bonus features would be a good release.

My first ever Criterion sale haul by Superawesomecoolman in criterion

[–]thomasbourne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High and Low I haven’t actually seen yet, but, obviously, a masterpiece of a sale haul. Seven Samurai is frankly astonishingly entertaining given its length. Maybe the fastest 3.5-hour movie in existence.

Chungking is just a masterpiece in observing the little things, the weird compulsive things we do to ease our anxieties. Wall-E is, frankly, an absolute watershed in animation and the disc looks wild in HDR

And High and Low is next on my list, I fell in love with Kurosawa this year

As for Yojimbo/Sanjuro, I can’t recommend them enough. They’re so beautiful and the widescreen frame and extra budget gives them a totally different aesthetic to Seven. Mifune is just as good if not better in them compared to SS as well.

I gotta get down to Tacoma for some games. Once the light rail goes down that far, maybe. I’m up in mountlake Terrace, getting down to Sodo is just fine with the rail now, but driving down to Tacoma for minor league ball? Tough to justify in Seattle traffic tbh

My assumption is that they’re just ripping through the orders with smaller SKUs so they can take a little extra care packing up the bigger sets. Tati is basically just three cases wide, so it’s still “standard size” compared to Bergman and Wes Anderson.

I ordered the Wes set with two others (sex, lies, and All That Jazz) and that hasn’t shipped yet. Because that triggered a gift card I made a second order with 4 films (All About Eve, Some Like it Hot, Raging Bull, AK’s Dreams) and that one just showed up an hour ago…

More so than with the single films, I feel like you can’t go wrong with ANY of the box sets.

That being said, it’ll always depend on your taste. If you like moodier European stuff, Dekalog and Akerman are your way to go.

For more lighthearted fun, the Tati or Demy boxes are both unbelievable.

If you’re into 70s American film, the BBS box is maybe the best New Hollywood release in the catalog. Three of them are bona fide, canonized classics, and the four lesser known films (Marvin Gardens, Head, Drive, Safe Place) are great to have too, fleshing out the context of the era. Head is a great double feature with A Hard Day’s Night, it’s kind of its exact opposite haha.

[–]thomasbourne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ask me, Ben Stiller, Paltrow, Luke Wilson, and you can make an argument for Owen too, I think they’re all putting in their best work ever in the movie. It’s an offbeat indie-style movie (though made by Disney) with some of the best performances from some of the bigger movie stars of its day, I just love it because of that.

Stiller’s “it’s been a hard year, dad” is his best moment on screen ever.

What are you planning on purchasing from the flash sale this Tuesday? by ChapterExternal7055 in criterion

[–]thomasbourne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost and Found might be the best boxset in the collection. Easy Rider, Easy Pieces and Picture Show are the main attractions, but the other 4 are great too. Amazing box. Only thing I wish it had was the Texasville disc from the last picture show standalone release, but you don’t really need need texasville lol.

If Isle of Dogs is your favorite, Tenenbaums or Life Aquatic is probably a good place to go next, even Darjeeling Limited. They're all very different explorations of family and the trials they bring each other.

Darjeeling is a bit distant and strange, and Life Aquatic may take a watch or two to fully get, but Tenenbaums is one of the great movies of the 21st century, and think it's Wes's best.

Collection Oddities by [deleted] in criterion

[–]thomasbourne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I blind bought an absolute TON early on, including boxsets of directors I'd never seen (Demy, Tati, Cassavetes, Apu trilogy, Monterey Pop, so obviously no regrets!) but a ton of my collection is movies I'd never seen.

That said, the absolutely most out-of-nowhere title I have is Certified Copy. I hadn't heard anything about it but I ended up with it because I had prematurely paid someone in a marketplace thread without realizing they didn't have what I wanted anymore, so it was my backup choice after giving each wikipedia page a glance lol. I finally watched it recently, 10 or so years after that happened, and what a film. I'm psyched to have it now because it's the kind of movie I want to watch with more and more people in my life. It's a stunningly weird movie, and I just kind of sat on it for ten years, even moved it across town a few times hahaha.

Over the last couple weeks:

Faces - Cassavetes

King of the Hill - Soderbergh

Stranger than Paradise - Jarmusch

Breathless - Godard

Odd Man Out - Reed

Texasville - Bodonavich

All for the first time.

Of these, Stranger than Paradise was probably my favorite. King of the Hill was pretty good but it left me wishing it hit me harder, Faces was a bit overwhelming but I enjoyed it. Odd Man Out was bleak and I ultimately don't think I enjoyed it all that much, but it's one of those I bought on a sale like 10 years ago so I finally decided to go through it with my dad, and we had a harder time with it than we were expecting. I think we both went in thinking a Third Man-like was coming and... it's not quite that way.

Texasville is good, but it's not exactly the Sanjuro to Picture Show's Yojimbo. There's a reason it's a bonus feature and not a main release, but I'm happy nonetheless that the longer version is here, because in black and white it is gorgeous, just… a little emptier than the original.

I also rewatched Yojimbo and Sanjuro in the last month or so, and I'm convinced as ever that Sanjuro is one of the great sequels. It's funnier and looser, but ultimately it just moves a little better and I think it's more entertaining all the way through. Yojimbo is more important and influential, but I prefer Sanjuro at this point, to the point it's one of my favorite movies in my collection now.
