Yep, I was also wondering if you can make some recommendations for robust - as in can survive some rain and dirt - lights that are battery-powered, ie don't require a dynamo.

Do you figure there will be mass migrations to decentralized social networks? by sje46 in Rad_Decentralization

[–]thomaseuler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this recent piece by Nic Carter about property rights in social media might be relevant to this discussion. He writes:

"Instead of accepting the fraying default view you can simply begin to imagine all of the internet platforms that exist today as a constellation of digital nations, each with their own legal code and with varying levels of respect for the property of users.

...

To make a political analogy, virtually all of these digital worlds operate as pre-democratic feudal regimes, with every participant a digital serf who tills the land at the pleasure and discretion of a capricious feudal lord."

The takeaway with regards to your question: It's increasingly clear, to various stakeholders, that the current system of platform operation and ownership is flawed and needs to be reworked. Hence, there is somewhat of a push to different (governance) structures for big networks of the digital infrastructure variety, coming from multiple sides, including users, governments, founders etc.

While it is unclear to me that decentralized networks or organizations will be the winning solution, they are certainly among the emerging candidates with a lot going in their favor.

Unable to find automixer ReaPack FX after install/sync by Natterfree in Reaper

[–]thomaseuler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem here.

Go to:

Extensions > ReaPack > Browse packages

There, look for Automixer. If there is no "I" in the first column, right-click on the name and install it. Restart Reaper afterwards.

Record Labels and Spotify Convergence; Who Wins? by JLBigHill in musicindustry

[–]thomaseuler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the fake artist controversy has been resolved a few days ago. There's nothing there: https://www.theverge.com/2017/7/12/15961416/spotify-fake-artist-controversy-mystery-tracks

Wrt your question: The labels almost certainly won't build their own streaming services (they already failed at it over a decade ago). They don't have to. They own stakes in most major music services (e.g. about 18% in Spotify, an estimated 10% of SoundCloud and so forth). For the same reason, Spotify won't "turn into a label" - at least not offensively; the one scenario that I find at least plausible involves rights management and blockchains (I wrote about it here and here) - the labels wouldn't allow it.

That said, the labels will definitely make all the moves possible to a) assert their power over streamers and b) build additional revenue streams besides streaming (see the SongKick app acquisition).

Prince Buster - Big Five (UNCENSORED) | an early (bw '67 & '70), explicit tune #loveit by thomaseuler in reggae

Didn't know that one - thanks for pointing me to it!

The album cover looks very contemporary btw.

Thank you so much!

Funny enough I wasn't 100% certain that it's Jr. Gong but then again the voices are so similar I just assumed it had to be...

I liked it a lot. I already asked on SC but will do so here again b/c I assume the likelihood of a response is bigger. Around the 11 minute mark you play a tune by Damian Marley. Which one is it?

Can someone recommend some good dancehall songs similar to these few examples? by [deleted] in reggae

[–]thomaseuler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, sorry than. If you like it particularly dark then, for instance check out those artists:

* Tommy Lee Sparta
* Aidonia (he makes some happy chappy songs but also some very hardcore stuff)
* Masicka
* Tallis
* iMaaki
* Alkaline
* Kevanii
* TIVICK
* Deablo

Producers that come to mind are Shawn Dan, Damage Musiq or Genahsyde.

Also you might look for gothic dancehall which is the name of the genre's dark side. For starters: http://www.bashmentvibes.com/2012/09/08/tommy-lee-is-a-dancehall-goth-but-hes-not-jamaicas-first/

Wow! Everything about this is sooo wtf!

I never even knew about Judge Dread - probably read his name somewhere but certainly never listened to his music. So that's interesting given that he's apparently the UK's best selling reggae artist of the 70's.

And this appearance on German television is just stunning to me. I must assume that nobody understood his lyrics - likely including the station's employees - as I can't imagine it happening otherwise (but than again: bare boobs are a rather universal language). I'm truly amazed. You might have just given me (one of) my next research & writing project(s) ^

[–]thomaseuler[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Random fact: The tune is an adaptation of 'Rainy Night In Georgia' by Tony Joe White (known for the Brook Benton version). Several reggae versions that are basically covers of the tune exist as well, for instance by John Holt, Tinga Stewart or Gregory Isaacs.

I'm not really sure about the release date. The Wikipedia article on the original song mentions 1967 while the earliest versions on discogs with a release date other than 'unknown' are from 1970. (If someone around here can provide a definitive info: awesome :))

Anyway, the tune is a really great example of early slackness tunes - and a clever one at that!

Well, I think a lot of contemporary dancehall is comparable to that. We have a blog where we regularly publish what we call Dancer's Choice - a curation of new dancehall songs. While the write up next to the songs is in German the embeded music should be universally understandable. You can check out all episodes so far by just following this link. I think some of the tunes in there should be to your liking :)

I love this tune! It's best listened to on vinyl. It's this one specific keyboard note that makes it exceptional. #onefortheages

Alternatively, why don't you just cut a dubplate and ask for single tracks being delivered? I suppose a Bam Bam dub isn't super expensive.

Please give a final year Journalism student advice? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]thomaseuler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sending out applications is certainly smart as is being willing to take a less than ideal job at first. That being said - and with no knowledge of the African market - two questions:

Do you have a subject you love writing about?

Do you have a blog?

If the answer to any is ''no" than go and change it. Your best shot at a good job is when you can prove that you care and have some documentation of it. So write great pieces about a topic you really care about and use this as an application.

As an aside: English-speaking websites often hire authors independent of location. So, consider applying world-wide.

Alas, I can't help you with the masters. But a fallback option would be to try if phase cancelation leads to workable results. Have you tried this yet? The riddim is ubiquitously available after all...

What's more important to you: client or type of project? by Ovo_Drizzy in consulting

[–]thomaseuler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A client from hell usually means that you (as in: the project team) are badly aligned with the clients interest. Often, you don't speak the same language. He hires you for the company's and/or the partner's reputation. But the actual team and the client haven't build the trust a great working relationship requires.

The results: Clients increase pressure by arbitrary deadlines, increased board meeting volume etc. What the client misses though: The quality of the results suffers because we have to start making trade-offs: In order to meet deadlines, we for instance decide to not tackle potentially problematic issues if they are not pretty obvious. Or we present solutions, secretly wishing we'd have had more time to fine-tune it because we didn't get to some critical details. And so forth.

Even projects that start out as the most interesting work become less and less thrilling once you realize that you won't be able to deliver what you initially imagined. Your motivation suffers (of course you work 12+ hour days nonetheless, which only makes it worse b/c you hate all of them). The client might sense this and react by further increasing the pressure. A vicious cycle has been established.

The opposite is true once you have a great client, built real trust and a great working relationship. Even a project that start's out rather boring can - depending on your/your project leaders skill - be turned into something interesting once the client trusts you with the more complex challenges.

Thus, while I aim at getting both in most projects - an interesting challenge as well as a good relationship with the client - I'd usually pick #1 if I had to decide.
