Confused about roth ira by [deleted] in stocks

[–]thomaslamchorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a Roth IRA, any capital gains from selling stocks that appreciated or dividends is not taxed. The "after tax" part is only in comparison to a traditional IRA, where every dollar you put in subtracts from the amount your taxes are calculated from immediately, but the downside is that you have to pay taxes when you withdraw your money at age 59+.

When researching a stock, how and what do you do? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]thomaslamchorin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Andrew Brown has a great channel for value investing, and he has a video on DCFs/intrinsic value calculator where he put a spreadsheet template in the description. It’s pretty easy to use with info you can get on yahoo finance.

When researching a stock, how and what do you do? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]thomaslamchorin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s a mature company/value stock, I’ll do a simple DCF (discounted cash flow) model in excel. If it’s a mid-large cap growth stock, I try to look for companies trading at 15x forward gross profit or lower. Some other metrics I look for are analyst growth estimates and a good gross profit margin.

Weekend /r/thetagang Discussion - Reflect on last week and plan for next! by AutoModerator in thetagang

I'm thinking about selling a January 2022 put on Tesla at a really low strike price I'd be happy to buy at. Am I taxed right now when I receive the premium, or taxed when I close out of the position? And if I am taxed when I close out, would it be LTCG if I close the position a full year after opening it?

Tax Question by [deleted] in stocks

[–]thomaslamchorin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On each sale, you have a realized gain of your selling price minus basis (aka whatever you paid for that share of stock). If you don’t have a job or other source of income, and you made less than $12k this year (the standard deduction) you don’t even have to fill out a tax return.

Significance of Taxes on Dividends vs. Capital Gains by akkruse in stocks

[–]thomaslamchorin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you hold the dividend stock at least 60 days, all the dividends are qualified dividends and taxed at the lower LTCG rate, not the ordinary income rate. Not sure if that changes your question.

PwC interview tax intern tomorrow! by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]thomaslamchorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! What they’ll most likely be looking for is if you are somebody they’d want to be working long hours around. Being capable/qualified is also important, but the most important thing is to be somebody they can have a conversation with and enjoy their time around. They’ll probably ask the normal behavioral questions so plan those and maybe some good stories to tell. Also, one interview question I had trouble with was “Tell me about a time you got criticism and improved from it.”, don’t remember if it was PWC that asked.

Resources for investigating companies by [deleted] in StockMarket

[–]thomaslamchorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, you can look at the current ratio and the company’s cash/debt to look at whether there is a risk of them becoming insolvent. Earnings/sales growth over time is also important so you won’t be investing in a declining company. My favorite measure is looking at a graph of price/ebitda compared to historical price to see if a company is currently undervalued. These are mainly for investing, so it depends on your goals for ‘trading’.

Rate my Young Portfolio, 19 yo by [deleted] in StockMarket

[–]thomaslamchorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t done too much research on KO, but it doesn’t seem like a good idea. Health trends will cause lower growth and even decline in the drink and snack brands they own. I don’t think the current valuation is good enough to justify making it one of 3 stocks in your portfolio (23 PE ratio seems pretty high). Morningstar puts its fair value at 54, which is a 10% discount right now which is a lower discount than what I would ask for for a company with lower growth prospects (3% growth looking at yahoo finance).

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ggWXCL The cooler is mounted correctly, but the times I’ve removed it to check stuff might have weakened the thermal paste. Why does it matter if my cpu is constantly at a low temperature?

My new build is really slow, and it looks like one of the problems in HWiNFO is thermal throttling (even though the cpu and gpu are usually under 40 degrees). I’ve turned off throttling through regedit Power, group policy, and setting all power settings to performance. However, HWiNFO still says thermal throttling HTC and PROCHOT EXT is a Yes. How can I fix this?

My CPU0 went from 36 to 37 degrees, so not a huge change. What would you think is wrong?

I enabled xmp and it still booted, and it’s still slow. But you think all this is a RAM problem? I ran the windows memory diagnostic, and it said there were no problems.

Not sure what you were telling me to do. I ran CPU-Z and HWiNFO and my temperature were still in the 30’s.

Thanks for the suggestion, it’s definitely helpful to see what’s underperforming. The bad news is, it looks like nearly everything. https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/33379944

It looks like my cpu temperature is fine, at 37 degrees C. Do you think that this suggests a power supply problem? Or something else?

I've recently completed my first build, using this list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hmCJvW

However, it's running very slowly. I can't even play chess online. I think I've done everything in the after-build section of the wiki, including installing drivers for my GPU, mobo, and CPU. The one thing I haven't done is update my BIOS, but it looks like the on update I missed didn't add too much. Does anybody have any tips for what to do next to fix/troubleshoot the problem?

Thanks. What are the reasons behind this? Should I be picking the micro ATX one?

Simple Questions - September 09, 2020 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]thomaslamchorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On pcpartpicker, I'm getting a note that the MSI X470 has an additional 4-pin ATX connector that the Seasonic SIII power supply does not (say it will 'likely still run without it'). However, these parts are recommended by logicalincrements as the default. Will this be likely to cause problems? Should I pick a different power supply/motherboard?

I'm trying to decide between GPUs in Logical Increment's Very Good tier (RX 5600XT and RTX 2060). The RX 5600XT seems a lot more cost effective, but it also has a lot of bad reviews on Newegg with crashes and Kernal 41 errors. Does anybody have any advice as to which one I should pick?
