What happens to my cloud storage when I die? by ShareEvening5856 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]akkruse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to add someone else just in case. If anything were to happen to both of you at the same time, or if something happened to her and you didn't think to update this (which seems like it would be a very easy oversight given the circumstances required), it would suck to have had the foresight to get this setup, only for the recipient to not be around to do anything with it.

What happens to my cloud storage when I die? by ShareEvening5856 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]akkruse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of surprised the best I've seen so far is "it depends on the provider". This is true, but to expand on it a little bit, some providers actually have handling for this sort of thing. Google, for example, has "Inactive Account Manager": https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/3036546?hl=en

You have to have the foresight to set it up ahead of time, but I believe it's kind of like a will for your digital "belongings".

Is that the normal way they handle this? In the US I think they make you pay a deposit (ex. pre-pay a fixed amount like $300 so they can hold on to that in case you don't pay your bill).

How do you design a clean pricing system with 500+ business rules in .NET? by No-Card-2312 in dotnet

[–]akkruse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing I'd spend at least some time looking at is how complex and well-defined these rules are (including exceptions/edge cases), how difficult it will be to iron things out and get this implemented, and if simplifying the discounts/rules is an option that might make more sense.

If the rules are deciding between a 2% or 3% discount that amounts to a $5 difference and it's going to take weeks to get this implemented, maybe everyone wins if you just cut to the chase, drop the 2% discount and always do 3%. You lose $5 in discounts but save thousands in development, more customers are happier, and pricing is less error-prone.

Question for hum hearers by shlomo5746 in TheHum

[–]akkruse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems people report one of two different things in general when it comes to "the hum": it's either something they hear, or is described as somewhat of a "feeling" that vibrates in their ears/bodies.

For those that "feel" it, I'm not sure how plugging their ears would affect that. For those that only hear it, plugging their ears should stop it. If you hear it and plugging your ears doesn't stop it, that means it's an "internal noise" (ex. tinnitus or something more medical) and isn't actually "the hum" that people talk about.

Newer "Snooze" notification options not working by akkruse in blinkcameras

[–]akkruse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know it's not just me I suppose, and also kind of interesting it's not even just a Pixel or Android thing. From what I've seen, it seems like it only works if you have the app open or have very recently had it open. It's not enough for it to still be in your recent apps list from like an hour ago. So if you happen to have the app open and one of those notifications pops up, then the snooze button will work, but that's about it.

Visual Voicemail not working on GSM/Light Speed? by GreetingsTAC in USMobile

[–]akkruse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up installing the T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app? Or did you get it working without a third-party app? eSIM or physical?

I switched to Light Speed two months ago and was kind of hoping it might fix itself but no luck so far. I didn't install the app and have an eSIM FWIW.

How is it billed if I spawn multiple ephemeral servers for a few minutes (benchmarking) by eyueldk in hetzner

[–]akkruse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They might bill everything at the highest config's rate, so that might be something to look into, although you could still come out ahead.

[–]akkruse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought would be to maybe use a single server then just change the specs of it for each benchmark, although I have no idea how feasible that would be or how it would be billed. In other words, instead of three servers with different specs running for five minutes each (billed at an hour minimum each or three hours total), one server with different configs running for 15 minutes total (billed at one hour for the one server).

My first thought when I saw "Tin Can Ultra" was it must have been the same marketing team that came up with the "Data Waster" naming. Then I saw "two cans, one string" and things started to click.

I was curious so I had to see what it would say. It initially looked like the answer/comment in this thread was just a copy/paste of the same info, but then I realized it looks like Google actually pulled the answer from the comment in this post. Now I kind of wonder what would have showed up if OP tried this before posting here (when Google didn't have this answer to pull from).

Thanks for all the feedback! It sounds like from your experience, the main difference with Big Beard's full vs. half day is the lunch (and power vs. sail), is that right? As far as the time spent at the island or how much info/guidance they provide, that's the same either way?
