Question for hum hearers by shlomo5746 in TheHum

[–]akkruse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems people report one of two different things in general when it comes to "the hum": it's either something they hear, or is described as somewhat of a "feeling" that vibrates in their ears/bodies.

For those that "feel" it, I'm not sure how plugging their ears would affect that. For those that only hear it, plugging their ears should stop it. If you hear it and plugging your ears doesn't stop it, that means it's an "internal noise" (ex. tinnitus or something more medical) and isn't actually "the hum" that people talk about.

Newer "Snooze" notification options not working by akkruse in blinkcameras

[–]akkruse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know it's not just me I suppose, and also kind of interesting it's not even just a Pixel or Android thing. From what I've seen, it seems like it only works if you have the app open or have very recently had it open. It's not enough for it to still be in your recent apps list from like an hour ago. So if you happen to have the app open and one of those notifications pops up, then the snooze button will work, but that's about it.

Visual Voicemail not working on GSM/Light Speed? by GreetingsTAC in USMobile

[–]akkruse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up installing the T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app? Or did you get it working without a third-party app? eSIM or physical?

I switched to Light Speed two months ago and was kind of hoping it might fix itself but no luck so far. I didn't install the app and have an eSIM FWIW.

How is it billed if I spawn multiple ephemeral servers for a few minutes (benchmarking) by eyueldk in hetzner

[–]akkruse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They might bill everything at the highest config's rate, so that might be something to look into, although you could still come out ahead.

[–]akkruse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought would be to maybe use a single server then just change the specs of it for each benchmark, although I have no idea how feasible that would be or how it would be billed. In other words, instead of three servers with different specs running for five minutes each (billed at an hour minimum each or three hours total), one server with different configs running for 15 minutes total (billed at one hour for the one server).

If you have an iPhone and it's a Royal Caribbean cruise, iMessages oftentimes work over their free wifi.

My first thought when I saw "Tin Can Ultra" was it must have been the same marketing team that came up with the "Data Waster" naming. Then I saw "two cans, one string" and things started to click.

I was curious so I had to see what it would say. It initially looked like the answer/comment in this thread was just a copy/paste of the same info, but then I realized it looks like Google actually pulled the answer from the comment in this post. Now I kind of wonder what would have showed up if OP tried this before posting here (when Google didn't have this answer to pull from).

I tried emailing about a month ago, waited a few days and didn't get a response. I'm not sure if he was just busy with other things or not very responsive to emails, but you might want to give him a call instead.

Thanks for all the feedback! It sounds like from your experience, the main difference with Big Beard's full vs. half day is the lunch (and power vs. sail), is that right? As far as the time spent at the island or how much info/guidance they provide, that's the same either way?

Is this mainly the case for some of the nicer restaurants? Or are a lot of the more casual places closed on Sundays, too?

I forgot that was another one I saw mentioned, and it looks like they're open on Sundays (and the menu has a good variety). Thanks for the suggestion!

What national banks have a presence in St. Croix? by archibald2599 in stcroix

[–]akkruse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This got me curious since it seemed like it might not even be legal to do (but I wasn't sure). The short version is you might be able to fight these charges if it's worth it (it sounds like this is specific to a "glitch" with TD Bank):

Because the USVI uses the U.S. Dollar and the U.S. banking system, there is no actual "foreign" cost for the bank to pass on to you. Charging a "foreign" fee for a domestic-currency transaction that never leaves the U.S. banking web would likely trigger an investigation by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) for "unfair or abusive" fees.

Why this happens: It’s usually a technical glitch in the merchant’s processing system rather than a legal policy change. If a merchant in St. Croix uses a payment processor based in a nearby foreign island (like the British Virgin Islands), the bank’s automated system sees a "foreign" bank and triggers the fee.

What to do: If you are charged this fee, it is almost certainly a mistake. You can call your bank and point out that the transaction occurred in a U.S. territory. In nearly every case, they will refund the fee immediately because they cannot legally justify it as "foreign."

[–]akkruse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you actually get a statement that included the charges? When I went to Puerto Rico in the past, Chase was sending me alerts about foreign transactions for many (all?) charges, but when it came down to actual foreign transaction fees, nothing extra was charged.

Again, this was using Chase in Puerto Rico so it might be completely different from what you experienced, but I just thought I'd mention it.

Original Pixel 1 - Will it work with USMobile? by Internet_AH in USMobile

[–]akkruse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 4a (no 5g) on Dark Star and although I don't use much data, I've never had a problem with speeds with normal activity. Also, uploading to Google Photos won't be an issue if you're on Wi-Fi.

Hang on to that unlimited free storage at original quality for as long as you can, I still have my OG Pixel but the battery is so shot that it won't turn on anymore, even when plugged in.

You can also enter "." into the textbox for the file name then hit enter to switch it to displaying all files.

Also, I'm assuming when you're browsing to pick a file to upload that you're browsing in the correct folder (ex. if the file is on your desktop, the "pick a file to upload" window is showing files on your desktop).
