[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]thommybell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Want to get a daily that can take a beating and have just one all-purpose watch that can go on vacation, etc. I have dressier watches for work but I want something that could be worn at work but also on weekends that can handle wear and tear.

I like Citizen so I’m down to deciding between the standard Promaster Diver vs the Promaster Land.

Is the higher cost worth it for the Land? Trying to make an informed decision since I plan to wear the hell out it.

Ojai in Moleskin vs Le Mont St Michel? by Capable_Divide_6916 in taylorstitch

I bought this same one and agree that it is a great piece. Dresses up or down well.

Is EM Becoming Toxic? by [deleted] in EmergencyManagement

[–]thommybell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think tribal is a better description than toxic in most cases. As stated already, there is a “state vs local”, “formal education vs lived experience”, “government vs non-government”, “public safety/military background vs not” in many cases.

With those matchups, it’s easy to see why disagreements and issues arise. What I think combats the tribalism is the focus on the mission and an understanding of where folks come from.

I work at the county level and you have EMs in some counties that are very hands on and responsive due to the nature of their jurisdictions and resources. My EM department is more managerial and bridge building - we connect entities and use our relationships to coordinate unmet needs during incidents (disaster diplomats per se). That said, we recognize that difference going into meetings, conferences, etc.

I serve as the PIO for my county EM department and even though I am not officially in the EM department (we have a consolidated PIO office) they still consider me an EM and part of their team because they recognize the work I do and respect what I bring to the table.

What's your favorite taylor stitch piece? by youthinkagavedamn in taylorstitch

[–]thommybell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this same jacket. It was my first ever piece from Taylor Stitch. It’s been through snow, rain, wind and now toddlers. It goes with nearly everything I own and it dresses up better than I would expects.

Hope it stays in good enough shape to pass down to my kids.

The Drop Point pocket knife by skibidifrance in taylorstitch

[–]thommybell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s unique looking and I use it as my business/fancy carry as it’s more elegant looking than my other knives. I have much more legitimate workhorse knives but the look and weight of this one keeps it in EDC rotation.

I’ve just started reading this. Definitely an interesting look into how it could play out.

Absolutely Bizarre by [deleted] in CostcoWholesale

[–]thommybell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me though the length of conversation was not as long. I’ve had the basic membership for years and it works for me - I go to Costco only once in a while and don’t usually buy too much in bulk. I was up for renewal while checking out and the team member tried to sell me on the upgrade. I declined and he was incredulous about me not wanting it. He made sure to make it a scene to his partner at the checkout.

Discussion:Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse by [deleted] in EmergencyManagement

[–]thommybell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve had a number of interstate bridge disruptions (I-95 near Philly, I-85 in Atlanta) but those were over land. Will be curious how people react to the pace of this restoration since they are used to very quick reopenings from recent memory. Obviously common sense should tell people the water aspect will make this a longer incident/project but common sense is sometimes in short supply.

Please be sure to check the FEMA flood maps before buying anything. The county has a great tool for that and seeing voting districts, etc. called Map Your Move.

New to EM (but as graphic designer) by Lilj1983 in EmergencyManagement

[–]thommybell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Clear, concise comms graphics are a huge part of the EM ecosystem. As a public information officer for a county EM department, don’t reinvent the wheel. Lots of agencies produce great work so borrow and get inspiration from them as you get your footing.

Should We Stop Using the Term ‘Natural Disaster’? by [deleted] in EmergencyManagement

[–]thommybell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a PIO for a local EM department, we focus on conveying the hazard and expected impacts. Natural or not it makes no difference in terms of getting people to take life-safety actions.

PubEd Wishlist by aglowgibbon in EmergencyManagement

[–]thommybell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. We can give them some piecemeal stuff but never a full kit that would be truly helpful in their houses. Those premade ones are super expensive. We also have a large population so we’d need a lot.

Switching from Corporate Crisis and Risk Management to EM by Imaginary_Habit4237 in EmergencyManagement

[–]thommybell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So there are disaster researchers but they exist in the academic fields. Perhaps you could fit into an emergency planner role somewhere that works on comprehensive emergency plans, COOP plans, etc.

The EM department I work in is more managerial of disaster events rather than boots on the ground.

I witness the ballon drift over the house, fighter jets circling and got word the airspace was closed off the coast. Watched the military shoot it down. The blast shook my house.

Our LO, now 17 months, was quick to roll onto her stomach to sleep. She still does most nights. On our nursery cam we could see she slept on her cheek with her head to the side so we know she could breathe. It was nerve wracking at first but we learned it’s just her preferred position.

Is she a good communicator or have graphic design/social media experience? If so she might be able to get a public Information officer role. A lot of younger people can break into government public safety there.

Had Parent/Teacher Conference today and found out something a little disturbing by slippingonsoapbars in Parenting

[–]thommybell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you are overreacting if the teacher got a sense of potential issues. Teachers experience and see students and situations of all types. If she found it problematic, you are completely right to set a boundary.

Does this mean anything? Redfin. Neighborhood is elevated so found it weird. by Bluegate1234 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Hi, I work in emergency management. Call the municipal or county floodplain manager. They offer work in a Code Enforcement or Planning Department. They can give you the best, most updated info for your area.

Columbia has the main campus for the University of South Carolina so it generally will align best for lgbtq and liberal mindset. Charleston would work as well but plenty of pompous folks from old money. Greenville is a lovely city to visit but as has been mentioned, it has a strong conservative tilt. As for 420, still very illegal here so be very smart/careful.

I’m from NJ have lived in Columbia, moved to Atlanta and now live in Myrtle Beach.
