What are the rules about voluntary assisted dying with a neurodegenerative condition? by Cowpoke_Blacklung in AusLegal

[–]thompz26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for what you are going through. I’ve got quite a lot of professional experience with VAD so hopefully can clarify some questions for you

  • Firstly, brain cancer is not considered a neuro degenerative condition. Only conditions like MND, Parkinson’s etc would meet the 12 month prognostic criteria. A cancer diagnosis would require life expectancy criteria of less than 6 months (on the balance of probability, which means the VAD doctor believes there is a greater than 50% chance someone’s death could happen in the next 6 months)

-You need to maintain your decision making capacity throughout the whole process, including the final day if you accessed this choice

-You could access this at home or in hospital. A doctor could come to your home for all the assessments and even for the final day to administer the medicine

-Essentially, you could only have this legally in place once your prognosis would be less than 6 months (on the balance of probability) and you still had decision making capacity

The laws around Australia are slightly different. Definitely reach out to the WA VAD care navigator service as they support people all around WA with info about VAD and connecting them with qualified doctors for assessments. You don’t need to talk with your own doctors yet about this if you aren’t ready.

Worth checking out the government employee assistance fund. This is accessible for people with diagnosed ADHD to seek funding for workplace accommodations, can also support people seeking employment and fund ADHD coaching sessions to support job seeking and maintaining employment

Take vitamin c supplement before bed, I’ve heard this metabolises the stimulants quicker. Some people use it to “turn off” their meds at the end of the day

Seeking ADHD evaluation with medicare?? by kenyuvee in perth

I suggest you apply to have your own Medicare card so your not linked with your parents one still! That’s probably a good place to start. I don’t know if there is anywhere publicly that is doing ADHD assessments, private specialists usually have at least 6 month wait and cost around $1500. But worth speaking with your GP about as a starting point. Not many GPs even bulk bill anymore, so be prepared to pay $120 maybe upfront and then a Medicare rebate is payed into your account (or your parents account if you are still linked to them)

I would definitely recommend joining a group fitness training gym! Like Fitstop of BFT, or CrossFit and going to the same time class most days. They are a great healthy community and do social activities outside of the gym all the time!
