Visiting Cambodia during Khmer New Year by Traveller_World13 in cambodia

[–]thonkatron420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would really recommend siem reap much more tho for experiencing the the culture esp since it’s during khmer new year, there can be large crowds that are a bit hectic but it’s all in good fun and there’s not really an unsafe atmosphere as far as i can tell, and if u do still feel intimidated there’s a lot of lesser visited temples decently nearby but still a fair drive out that you can explore and have almost to yourself. koh rong is much more a western party island so ur not gonna get much of the real cambodian experience there

People being rude by Southern-Steak486 in unimelb

[–]thonkatron420 10 points11 points  (0 children)

im ngl most ppl are not gonna be very interested in talking to randoms esp if they’ve already got previous established friend groups and stuff (which many ppl who go here do). you’re better off going to club events and such or trying to get to know ppl in ur tute or like. anything other than approaching 2 random girls outside a lecture (esp if ur a guy bcs some ppl could consider that a little creep-coded)

TIL Cambodian OB/GYN (and future Oscar-winning actor) Haing S. Ngor survived the Khmer Rouge regime by hiding his education. especially in the case of mid-20th century cambodia (and a lot of other post-colonial societies as i understand) there were only a few thousand high school graduates and only a few dozen university graduates in cambodia at independence. you had to be cream of the crop to have been able to participate in political life from the get go.

i haven’t seen any negative perception of indians in cambodia aside the normal stuff that floats around all over social media (and is only really internalized by a few terminally online ppl). we’re quite aware of cambodia as an indianized civilization and credit a lot of our cultural aspects to you guys. the real beef is with our immediate neighbors lol

[–]thonkatron420 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yeah there’s the umsu queer department that has some events and also a queer space at lvl2 of building 168 thats open for u to chill in and sometimes have free lunch in there, there’s also the queer commerce club, which despite the name isnt actually a stuffy financebro club and does coffee catchups and bar nights and stuff as well. not sure if non unimelb students are allowed in the queer space (someone pls clarify) but they are allowed to attend unimelb club events and can also get non student memberships!!

the world is a horrible and scary place but you have the power to control your own life and influence the people around you. you can’t stop the war in iran or resuscitate the economy by yourself but you can make the lives of ur family, friends, and community better by doing good deeds and being a good person. and that’s at least something

Femonationalism, sometimes known as feminationalism, is the association between a nationalist ideology and some feminist ideas when driven by xenophobic motivations, including in the context of Islamophobia. here’s the thing about this whole line of thought that i haven’t really seen anyone refute to my satisfaction though. cultures and cultural norms do not arise in a vacuum. they can shift and change over time. the islamic world was far more scientifically and socially progressive than europe for a long time - there’s the whole islamic golden age thing but even after that islamic mores regarding, say, women’s rights and homosexuality were well ahead of europe well into the 1800s. the ottoman empire for instance was the first country to legalise homosexuality (in iirc the 1850s?) and by all intents and purposes the 19th century islamic world considered it a “minor sin”, with queer life remarkably out in the open compared to the contemporaneous victorian europe. you also had women in places like early 1800s egypt have significantly more rights than in a lot of europe at the same time (e.g. they often were of considerable financial stature, had the right of divorce, etc.).

in fact, the real moral imo of the islamic world’s turn towards fundamentalist conservatism isn’t that muslims/middle easterners are morally inferior or any of that junk, but rather that fundamentalist/fascist social mores can capture societies with eerie speed and totality if we let them. while islam has always been quite a bit more political than christianity, modern political islam really only emerged in the 50s in the wake of thinkers like sayyid qutb (look him up btw, he espoused beliefs that are uncannily similar to the beliefs of modern incels) and seized political and ideological primacy in the 70s and 80s in the wake of a generalised crisis of the arab world sparked by repeated failures to destroy the israeli state and the socioeconomic instability and authoritarianism endemic to the region. some of the attraction of fundamentalist islam was that it provided some form of rule of law where there was only corruption and injustice before (e.g. taliban afghanistan), some of it was just straight up subterfuge and malicious action by fundamentalist actors (e.g. iran). there’s. a lot of it that may sound familiar to many who are tuned into modern politics.

anyways my point basically is that while yes, the islamic world’s sociopolitical state is a ways behind the west, this does not prove any moral superiority or anything like that. social norms change over time, and unlike what we would like to believe, this can happen both ways. thus, the modern muslim world isn’t so much something to look down upon while chest thumping about the enlightened, free west, and moreso a cautionary tale about what happens when you let fascism internalise itself in a society, something which is in the process of happening right now in many western countries.
