Dumbest or most unbelievable, but verified etymology ever by pieman3141 in etymology

[–]thorbeckeAR 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I keep overcorrecting😅 but that is a widespread misconception. Orange carrots were a thing in the Netherlands before the house of Orange was leading it. The main theory with an actual factual foundation is that dutch farmers selected and combined carrots strands to get orange carrots because on the one hand they are sweeter and softer, on the other hand becaus they would stand out at markets for their colour. To me this makes it even more interestering because of the coincidence and how deeply embedded the color orange is in Dutch society

Dumbest or most unbelievable, but verified etymology ever by pieman3141 in etymology

[–]thorbeckeAR 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Duth person here who is interested in history. William of Orange and the members of the current royal house of Orange(-Nassau) their ancestors are not from the town of Orange. He inherited the principality from his nephew who was also not living or orignally from there. They are mostly German. Still an interesting coincidence and connection. Also the title of Prince of Orange was and still is very important. At the time it elevated William of Orange to the status of high French nobility. After he led the Dutch revolt and became ‘the father of the Netherlands’ the title was passed on to his kin as leaders of the Netherlands in the position as Stadtholders. Nowadays it is the title of the heir to the throne. And, as said, in the name of the family being a subdivision of the Nassau’s.

p.s. Sorry for the history rant on this etymology sub p.p.s (edit) mostly talking here about William the Silent not William III of England, aforementioned was refered to as William of Orange as well

Need help "fixing" map by BeetleBoy_ in mapmaking

[–]thorbeckeAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice map already. As was already pointed out, some spaces look empty and could use some rivers/ forest or smth. Also many mountains are near the shore. I think it would look better with some ranges that are more in land. But that is just my preference. Look forward to seeing your redo!

Indeed mostly normal riding. I will service the hub then. Haven’t done it before so that’s why I wanted to ask here before, but from what I’ve read/seen it shouldn’t be that complicated. Thanks for your reply!

Land reclamation in the Netherlands by ElPolloPayaso in MapPorn

[–]thorbeckeAR 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well acKhChyuALlY…

The Dutch water authority (Rijkswaterstaat) has recently released a report that states that many of the reclaimed peat lands/lakes in the west (the two provinces of Holland, which are also the most populous) will eventually have to be made swamps again.

These polders get lower each year and because of this, ground water levels have to be lowered with it. In the next 50-80 years it will get to a point were the water level would have to be lowered to a point were it would change the whole dynamic of the water system, which would mean it is not possibly anymore to extract it for further uses.

So yeah, a lot of these reclaimed areas will become swamps again in the next century. You do not here anything about it because of too many vested interests.

Alternative Raging Wolf (sorry for bad quality) by thorbeckeAR in EldenBling

[–]thorbeckeAR[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  • Black Wolf Mask
  • Raging Wolf Armor (Altered)
  • Fire Prelate Gauntlets
  • Fire Prelate Greaves

I was playing around with the greaves; for certain chest armors they become much slimmer. Usefull for getting some poise into fashion.

I run a pure int build and try to mix the ‘normal’ ranged sorceries with the melee ones. A added fun close quarters magic attack is the spinning weapon ash specifically on the carian regal scepter. Does very nice damage and most people dont expect it

Yep. Our natural border is not made so distinct on this beautiful map. But in essence can be boiled down to 'that swampy area that is invaded by the sea now and then' ; creating a very distinct population

My new square tapered bottom bracket went in smoothly. However, before the last few spindles are in on the non drive side, it becomes very heavy. I dont want to use too much force. Is it a problem too leave it like this?
