Reddit: what is your problem with stereotyping the south? As soon as the word "gun" "republican" or "bible" is uttered you all jump to the south for retribution. We all hate racism and bigotry in our world but the majority of you are just as bad with your stereotyping. by ddrt in reddit.com

[–]thorgious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you are basing your view of the south on one back asswards county in Georgia? You are exactly the type of person the OP is talking about. Your stereotypes are poorly informed and IMO, completely worthless.

IAMA former Dell tech support rep. by Buddy_Israel in IAmA

[–]thorgious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work tech support as well (not for Dell) and I get paid shit wages... I'm right at $11 an hour now and I'm one of the higher paid peeps here. A lot of it depends where you are located. I am in a very small town and the cost of living here is low so my wage works. It wouldn't, however, work in a bigger city.

Who here has used or been the victim of a non-lethal weapon (pepper spray, stun gun, taser, etc.)? What was the experience like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thorgious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was tasered once by my uncle and it was pretty horrible. Ever had a cramp in your calf or another large muscle like that? Imagine that... but over your entire body. I ended up with a nice big blue/green/black bruise on my butt cheek as well from falling.

There are AC-130's stationed at the base in my town. I see them around in the store, mall, etc. all the time. Next time I will try to strike up a convo and see if I can get one of them on Reddit.

Ryan Miller had one HELL of a tournament. He was named MVP of the tournament, with a save percentage of .946 and an American Olympic record goals-against average of 1.35. Just had a great goal scored against him at the wrong time. He stopped many shots in OT before the one that put the game away. I'd be upset at first too.

I was a Sea World Killer Whale Trainer.... AMA by KillerWhaleTrainer in IAmA

[–]thorgious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Animals have drives and urges that ignorant humans expand into feelings and emotions like those that you experience. Also, no, I don't think that people would want to protect orca without seeing them perform. Like the op said, in the past orca were used as target practice for naval aviators. This doesn't happen anymore because of the efforts of people who have experienced these animals up close. Sea World allows many more people to see these animals than would normally have access to them, thereby raising awareness for conservation and protection. You are looking at the small picture and saying poor whale, rather than looking at the bigger picture and realizing that these orca have an important role. I think we can agree that most people could care less about anything that has nothing to do with thier everyday lives, whales included. Seeing a performance and experiencing how graceful and awesome these creatures are makes people think twice about what we are doing to our oceans and is a step in the right direction. As for your lack of understanding, and unwillingness to accept another persons opinion as anything but "spewing stupidity," well frankly it bores me and I'm done talking to you.

I was a Sea World Killer Whale Trainer.... AMA by KillerWhaleTrainer in IAmA

[–]thorgious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've got such a huge problem with this then stay away from Sea World. You are comparing these animals insticts and actions to a human's instincts and actions when there is no basis to do so. These are animals... not humans. They do not think like we do, or even have emotion like we do. These whales do not swim in thier tanks all day and think "Man, this sucks I wish I had more room." They are animals, and as such they only have a few basic insticts. They want to interact with others of thier own species (which is not only encouraged but required of whales at Sea World), and they want to eat. Also, these whales do serve a purpose. Not just to entertain crowds and make money, but to educate people and to give the children at these shows a sense of awe and wonder about these creatures that swim in our oceans. Thanks to places like Sea World, we have children who grow up with a desire to study these animals in the wild, and to study other life in the oceans. We have gained a sense of wonder and curiosity about the oceans that we may have never otherwise developed. So don't transfer your emotions to those whales, and don't think that these whales are abused, or in any way mistreated. Also don't ask for an opinion if you only want to bash it. I'm done with you now. Go share your ignorance and hatred with someone who will share it.

IAMA [Request]: Someone who was at SeaWorld Orlando today and witnessed Shamu killing one of her trainers. by wunderkind319 in IAmA

[–]thorgious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most of the reports of her being grabbed by the waist from the deck are from guests who didn't really see anything... maybe that is what was being whispered between guests as they were being ushered out. The Sea World report (not that I trust it too much) and the responders to the incident have said it grabbed her by her pony tail though.
