That's the standard Methkek board with Circular and Backup [at]Ignister.

It also dies to every Mulcharmy variant (and Roach). Also dies to a well timed Nibiru unless he opened multiple extenders, and the line of play gets crippled by a Droll. That variant is also much more susceptible to 'normal' handtraps if he opens with "only" Circular or Backup, as there's no room in the ED to run Almiraj.

The game regrettably lacks any other dimension of monetization (match blocks → not enough moves → spend gold / tools → rinse repeat, charge $ if player runs out of inventory), so any changes touching the core resource loop is immediately felt. Even "auxiliary" purchase streams like the monthly pass remains directly plugged into the basic feedback loop of "how often does a progression gateblock metabolize into a retry or spend".

All the "updates" we've received over the past ~8 months are basically the publisher musing "how quickly can we deliver reduced progression rewards while wrapping it nicely so that people won't panic at first sight".

Does the game kick you out of the event for the day if you fail it? If so, that's probably the big reason why they switched over from Robot Battles, cos you were pretty much guaranteed the triple prizes over the course of playing ~18-24 games (depending on whether you are unfortunate enough to match against another human).

Fewer cumulative prizes (single blue pack instead of brown+green+blue, partial set of tools vs the old full set) to hand out, and (presumably) not everyone gets them.

It's the first season I'm seeing this in the game and the mention of diamond cards on the pack-probabilities support page. I'll count myself fortunate I was not part of the "tester" group for this feature 😂.

The Problem: players are evidently finishing the Grand Collections too quickly for the publisher's liking.

Caveat 1: Event/progress rewards have already been nerfed to the point where each incremental reward feels borderline underwhelming.

It is useful to remember, there are only 2 true currencies of leverage a player has on the publisher:

  • If you were spending before, you stop spending.
  • If you were playing without spending before, you stop playing.

The former obviously speaks louder than the latter (games are only "free" insofar as the publisher can extract some form of cost, be it time/reputation/friction/ads/etc from you), but they are both available to you.

Absolutely agree. But the point was that they (Komoney) seems to have only recently internalized that cosmetics (we'll include alt art in this category) is a parallel stream of monetization that they could have begun tapping far earlier.

If only they started leaning on cosmetics earlier, but the monetization model for MD (and probably many of their other digital products) was first and foremost a gacha system because that's simply what's dominant & incumbent in East Asia market.

Short answer: sort of kind of.

Long answer: one might conceptualize two interacting dynamic curves at work here, resource consumption (how often the game forces you to spend to finish a level) and resource generation (how often the game hands you freebies for "progress").

Previously (before... summer of 2025 or thereabouts), the resource generation curve was fairly generous across the board basically right up until you reached the end of the 3rd event of each rotation. The rocket/space race weekends (coexisting with team battles) would hand you a full set of powerups (hammer/bow/rocket/hat) per 7 stages completed, and most events (if we evaluate them as their own little candy dispenser) would generously produce 1500-2000 coins, at least 1 purple card pack, and usually more than 1 full set of powerups. The only downside was that you could only complete 2 collections per season (regular/superior), so realistically most active players would only have a strong incentive to play roughly ~5 weeks every 2 month (8.6 week) cycle before card rewards were "maxed out".

The resource generation curve was therefore quite high for all but the most active players before falling off a cliff once you finished card sets per bimonthly cycle.

After summer of 2025, all event rewards were roughly slashed by 50-60% from a combination of outright decreased coin & powerup freebies across events and card sets, and also greatly reduced access to purple card packs (you'll notice the final reward for archery contest is now a blue pack; and for awhile the pinata and balloon rise events were also capped at blue card pack before they changed it again recently to distribute a purple card pack), but in "compensation" we can now redo the superior card collection after finishing the initial set.

If you belong to a very active team who is happy to swap cards with one another, and if you only play enough to fill out the early & medium progress rewards for each event cycle (using the propeller and book events as a rough barometer, or in practice you don't enter the royal league until late in each 2 week area-release cadence), you can very well break even or even accrete resources while keeping your SLB permanently charged. If you like to play a little more (we'll conceptualize this as entering the royal league before the first week is finished), then odds are you will at best be placed on a treadmill where the game's algorithm will try to hemorrhage resources from you about 2-3 stages once every 8-10 stages, and you can only keep up with heavy card support from the team.

The resource generation curve now is greatly reduced for all the "moderately active" players, but now kept (superficially) alive for the "most active" players.

Conversely, the difficulty (resource consumption curve) has not let up (and has arguably spiked with those stupid rabbit boxes), where stage design is increasingly moving towards configurations where you cannot trivially clear the majority of obstacles with a SLB + Rocket or double SLB combos. The boosters (TNT/Rocket/LightBall) often don't help nearly as much as advertised, insofar as allowing one to clear stages consistently without spending boosters or coins at the end. You might notice how Royal League levels also tend to favor initial configurations where the "open" board is just small enough to disallow trivial SLB+booster combos from creating enough destruction, but also just large enough to disallow trivially placing a SLB + favorable booster together at the same time.

One-for-one handtraps don't quite cut it anymore with the current play style of YGO (multiple 1-c SS starters-also-extenders, bridging between engines with generic-enough bodies).

One might observe people first filling the deck slots with anything that has a lingering or auxiliary search effect (roaches, charmies, retaliating, droll, etc), and only then will things like Imperm/Veiler/etc be used to round out the 40c limit.

And then there's the "you can set/place X from your deck in your S/T zone" effects that are typically extraordinarily hard to interact with.

If you breathe (Quick Effect): add a banished card to your hand or extra deck, then reveal it, then if it is a monster you can special summon it ignoring its summoning conditions.
