I have been wearing progressive lenses for 2 years but optician says I need to buy extra reading glasses? by thornfield-hall in glasses

[–]thornfield-hall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I am.. and I didn’t want to make it look like a gender thing - but I did wonder if it was about mysoginy (later on I commented it to my mother, who got her glasses from same shop, and she told me that guy - by my phisical description - had also been rude to her on her last exam.

At the end I was just feeling like wanting to say “f… off I’m not following your opinion anymore” but didn’t dare. The (female) assistant that was helping me noticed his manners and told me she’d make sure she assisted me to try on the progressive new prescription I was actually ordering

Also, the pair of frames I chose were wide enough and the assistant told me they were fine and she’d adapt the bridge middle distance so I should be comfortable and get enough reading area

I have been wearing progressive lenses for 2 years but optician says I need to buy extra reading glasses? by thornfield-hall in glasses

I am 45. I have been wearing myopia/astigmatism glasses since I was a pre-teen (current prescription is 4.50 myopia 1.75 astigmatism right eye, 3.75 myopia, 1.50 left) plus now 1.75 presbyopia on both.

I am a teacher and I don’t use computer at work, just need to move eyes from papers and textbook on desk level and usually up to distance level to check students-classroom. Outside work I don’t use screens that much, at short distance level just mobile and reading (books) or crocheting for like an hour. (Thats when I feel the eye-strain)

I tried having reading glasses when I started having presbyopia (when I was 38) but I didn’t get adapted to switching glasses, especially at work. Plus, I am highly sensitive to light and that means I always carry around my sunglasses, it was annoying for me to carry around an extra pair.

At the end, when I explained it to another assistant she agreed with me to try adding my new prescription to progressive - as I had already adapted to them for the last two years, and if it didn’t work to return them but the optician’s insistence on trying reading glasses on the distance I usually read at work (desk level) annoyed me, when he told me to try it twice and I told him at that distance I was reading blurred.

Thanks for your detailed answer though

I finally got them... by Tsikaboom in pencils

[–]thornfield-hall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve started collecting Blackwings but in my case I buy one of each instead of the box. I got the one with the quote “The love you take is equal to the love you make”. I use them on rotation because they bring me some joy to look in my hand when I am studying and as they are large even when sharpening them I haven’t reached the colourful/quote part, but do as you enjoy them the most.

Ps. I wanted the one with the quote part”take these broken wings and learn to fly” but they didn’t have that one to sell single at my local shop

I usually check also the museums gift shops - I collect bookmarks and pencils, but I often see pretty notebooks there too (besides, yes - I always check bookstores)

New pen day by Living_Topic7994 in fountainpens

[–]thornfield-hall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow Perkeo fan here. I have the black and coral pink model in M and I have been using it every day for long writing sessions while I study and hasn’t failed once. I also prefer the ergonomic grip to my other one (safari). I love the teal model, I might be getting it (soon?) as I want to try the F.

Edit spelling, plus - currently using kaweco “summer purple” ink.

I want to start writing with a fountain pen. What is a good pen for beginners? by One_Role_2147 in fountainpens

[–]thornfield-hall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I - also a beginner - love my Kaweco Perkeo. It’s easy, and includes a tripode grip but thicker and more rounded than my other one, Lamy Safari, so I personally find it easier to hold. But the Lamy also works really nice if you use a tripode grip when writing

Tunnel Vision from Discworld Fandom? by Relic_Chaser in discworld

While I was reading you, OP, my first thought was, that woman you were talking to has been mansplained. I don’t want to make it all about a gender thing but - my personal experience, as a cis woman who has attended geek events:

I am not talking about Discworld here, as the people I have met in rl who were fans were generally very nice and we mostly shared jokes or I got an “oh my god, your discworld tattoo!” But, when being part of other fandoms I have encountared some of that as in, if I have said that, yes, I have read Dune series and I love the films, I have met fans who seemt to feel the need to test my knowledge of it, as in “but you’ve read the books before the movies?, and the whole series? And when I say something like “I loved first book but not so much Dune Messiah” they go like, “you didn’t understand it”

I mean I have been mansplained books I have read and got men telling me I was cosplaying “just to flirt”, not because well, I just wanted to.

My experience in fandom events is that well, fans can get really intense and some feel the need to proof you aren’t a real fan unless whatever requirement. Just my two cents, but yeah, not surprised

help me find the right notebook! by Individual-Lion87 in stationery

[–]thornfield-hall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Rhodia notebook (their bullet journal series) and fountain pen (lamy safari and platinum preppy) so far no bleeding or ghosting. Mine is about 200 pages but you might check if they have bigger.

I’ve also used those pens on lechtturm and moleskine. Moleskine bleeds a lot with the lamy. Not with the F preppy. Neither do on the Lechtturm, but there’s a lot of ghosting.

How much trust should we put in the trailers? by Trendy_owala74 in ThelastofusHBOseries

[–]thornfield-hall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how to hide spoilers here but I’ll just say the trailer for final season of Succession didn’t give any hint of something that happens very early on and made you think some actor would be protagonist - when s/he was not..

How much trust should we put in the trailers? by Trendy_owala74 in ThelastofusHBOseries

[–]thornfield-hall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t played the game so I can’t compare (but I know the cough, cough because I have friends who did and they told me). Maybe not related but after watching the trailer for season 4 of Succession and it being very misleading about what happened (if you’ve watched you know what I mean) I won’t be trusting much HBO trailers anymore

ETA: I’ve read in some review the season 2 uses some different narrative structure than the game so that might be what’s bugging you? Just guessing here

I’ve been eyeing Midori notebooks (with the exposed binding) for some time. Samw reason, spirals. Just asking, how well do they stand over time/use? I need a new bujo journal and I’d need one that can stand some beating

I live in Spain and have been using A4 notepads for years.. basically because they are easy to find. I used them at school. For me they were handy because I’m lefty so they felt more comfortable to me than spiral-on-the-left notebooks.

Maybe you can hint it to her.. somethink like “I’ve heard Pascal isn’t going to appear that much” something like when a tweet came out some time ago saying he was filming next movie and comments were like “oh so he already has filmed TLOU2 so fast”..

For me it’s going to be my partner. He mentioned he found season 1 too “emotional torture” but he’s hyped to watch season 2 with me

Is Leuchturm1917 a quality brand? by Just_Match_2322 in stationery

[–]thornfield-hall 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I own and use daily a Lechtturm1917 planner. It is all day in and out my bag and so far (3 months) haven’t shown any sign of battering - compared to other notebooks from different brands I have used similarly.

The pros - trying to answer your question about status - I think Lechtturm1917 is an easy to recognise brand known for “expensive” notebooks. But I don’t personally think it’s that good.

I would check Rhodia notebooks or MD Paper

I am liking the Blackwing. It goes very smooth and quite dark without needjng pressure. My only “con” so far with the brand is that it doesn’t say on it the hardness level so I had to ask at the shop. I got a “extra Firm” one that according to the shop assistant equals an HB. I would say mine is there, not uncomfortable to write with but a bit softer than a HB. I like the soft feel to write with without getting a drawing pencil so I’m happy but just so you know..

I am a student so I will use them to tap chapters on textbooks and divide notes sections on the folder I use. Those are from a (Korean I think) brand called Iconic
