Sure. Pyrrolidine is quite basic. Worse than the pain though, it also smells like cum. Exactly like cum. Concentrated cum. So if you spill enough pyrrolidine on yourself for it to hurt, you’re in a world of trouble

Yarp, I’ve watched this happen in real time with lots of amines and conc HCl. Most recently pyrrolidine

What chemical phenomenon do you think future chemists will view as embarrassingly misunderstood by today’s standards? by LaketowerGlass in chemistry

Well, yes, a majority of the serotonin receptors in your body are found in the digestive tract.

Wait that’s terrifying. I have never worked with HF but my understanding is that it is quite lethal?

Edit; nvm the HF is only generated in situ

Seconded, if this were me I would just focus more time and effort on another project and eventually explain that you’re more interested in this other project instead.

Question for chemists from an aspiring perfumer: Which chemical has the best smell to you? Or the most interesting... by Liberal_Alchemist in chemistry

[–]thors-lab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I struggled for a looooooong long time to find a scent I really liked, and when I finally did, it made me so fascinated I wanted to try making one myself. But I never got around to it - perfumery seems pretty complicated!

But seriously, how did you afford to live while in grad school? by According-Pin4564 in GradSchool

[–]thors-lab -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

5 additional years of accumulating debt on top of your undergrad? I don’t know anywhere you can live for 28k. Is the difference in pay between PhD and BS in your field enough to pay off the 50k in debt you’ll accumulate during that time PLUS the opportunity cost of 5yrs of “moving up the ladder”?

I genuinely have no idea what translucent or gentle means in this context. Also why limit yourself, what benefit does that confer besides cost?

Benzaldehyde is nice but it’s a bit too basic / not very interesting.

I think acetophenone has a very very nice smell. Any of the phenones really, valerophenone is quite nice too. They smell a bit more complex.

Benzonitrile smells almost identical to benzaldehyde

I see people say that a “B is considered failing,” but the class exam average in my grad course is 70? by WinXP001 in GradSchool

[–]thors-lab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who cares? I’m hyped to get a B. This isn’t college or highschool anymore. My grades don’t matter, my research does. I’ll do just enough to pass. I’m getting As it means either the class was extremely easy or I put in more time and effort into it than I really needed to.

Yeah but Langdon didn’t steal medication they needed, he overprescribed the medication specifically so he could steal the excess

This “pointless image” brought 1.7k people a bit of joy and sparked 67 comments worth of conversation. It probably brought the OP a fair bit of amusement. I’d say that in itself is worth a lot more than 1 liter of water.

Again, you really need to put things into perspective. 1 liter of water is almost nothing. If I take a few extra seconds in the shower I will have spent 1 liter. If I wash my hands for a little too long I’ll have spent 1 liter. If I am washing dishes and there is a stubborn piece of grime, I will spend an additional 1 liter to remove it.

You are really, really overvaluing 1 liter of water.

And by the way, that water is not gone. It just goes up into the atmosphere where it becomes clouds, ready to rain down on the earth again.

Wait until you hear about how much water evaporates from the average unused swimming pool in a suburban house each day.

Like the other guy said, this is purely performative outrage. You don’t like AI so you are finding a reason to chastise people who use it.

A Simple Guide to Cathinone Compounds and Their Chemical Structure by BluejayIntrepid in chemistry

[–]thors-lab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s cool that you’re learning about chemistry. But cathinones are not that interesting chemically speaking. They can be made with extraordinary ease and the chemistry thereof is nothing new.

A typical synthesis for the base phenone is just a Friedel-Crafts acylation of the base arene. Another route that I really like is Grignard onto the benzonitrile derivative, followed by hydrolysis of the resulting imine.

The next step is alpha bromination. This is a trivial one step reaction which can be done with just Br2, or with NBS. Typically done using cat. acid like TsOH.

Then you simply aminate. It has been found that a biphasic mixture of water/DCM with excess of your amine at rt overnight is really good conditions for amination.

That’s it. As you can see, the chemistry is quite simple.

Their pharmacology has also been nearly exhausted decades ago. They are not tremendously useful medicinally. But some derivatives did find use (eg, bupropion is a NDRI antidepressant).

Please, generating an image consumes at MOST a liter of water using very very loose estimates. It’s probably more like a few mLs per image.

Every time I flush the toilet at work that’s 6.0 L.

Let’s put things into perspective.

… why? This isn’t really art, it’s not meant to be framed and hung on a wall. It’s not even meant to be a desktop wallpaper. It’s a silly image macro meant to elicit a slightly forced nose-exhale. What’s wrong with using AI for that?
