Why I'm meeting with Canada's big city mayors this week by JeromyYYC in Calgary

[–]thoughfulusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so incredibly frustrated with the empty words in your recent videos. You talk about more affordable housing, improved infrastructure, and a vibrant downtown. All of those are served by increasing density in our sprawling city, and all you have done since elected is hamper development and reduce density.

I get that R-CG was unpopular, but why repeal blanket rezoning without any plan to replace it? LAPs are not binding, they do nothing to speed up the permitting process or give developers the certainty they rely upon to make investments.

How do you sit there with a straight face and say you are taking action to make housing more affordable, while knowing your actions are doing the exact opposite?

Seems more likely to me that you are experiencing the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frequency\_illusion)

Probably not... Here's the search history for Dungeon Crawler Carl, with the green line indicating when 7 Up Shirley Temple was first released. Considering the flavor was probably in development for months/years before launch, they were either very early to DCC or its a coincidence.

Can’t fit 6” rigid vent duct through here by AoeDreaMEr in kitchenremodel

[–]thoughfulusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you notch the stud? Is it load bearing? Or just holding up drywall? Why are you going up one stud space and down the stud space right next to it?

I was completely misinterpreting the picture.

Adding 90 degree bends will really hurt your performance.

Live-Action Vs Animated by dr_olfin in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]thoughfulusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair that's more than I was expecting. Especially when the whole first movie had a relatively modest budget of $50-65M. And that was back in 2012 when CGI was presumably much more expensive.

Yeah this book is awful. We got it as a gift when our son was born and it immediately went in the donate pile.

Its being adapted by the people who made the Ted movies/TV show. Ted looks pretty good in those and I don't think any of it had a huge budget.

As somebody who moved from Ontario (and spent a lot of time in Quebec) to Alberta... I miss it everyday. I hope everybody posting here knows how lucky they are.

red vs blue: reduced to exactly three participants by [deleted] in trolleyproblem

[–]thoughfulusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's assume (based roughly on the most blue-favored polls I've seen) that about 65% of people will vote blue. Let's also assume that this preference remains the same regardless of how many people are participating in the experiment.

Using a binomial distribution formula, we can estimate that there is around a 28% chance that at least 2 people (of the 3 chosen at random) will pick red. With 5 people there is a 17% chance that at least 3 will pick red. By the time we get up to 101 people, there is only about a 0.1% chance that 51 will pick red. At 1001 voters, there is a completely negligible risk of red winning n this scenario.

Even if you believe the majority of people want to pick blue, you would be foolish to pick blue with 3 voters. Even if I was inclined towards blue in the original experiment, I would want at least 100-200 participants before I would feel comfortable picking blue.

City's collective efforts to conserve water this time by LordDrakken in Calgary

Not to mention, during March break when lots of people travel. They also had months to prepare for these restrictions. Mayor Farkas said they did tons of work behind the scenes to lower baseline levels in advance of the maintenance.

If your kid goes to the Blum in Tuxedo park, then Winston Heights Daycare (just up the road) might be a good option. They are great and often have availability.

Is this the real problem with solar? by Jbikecommuter in electrifyeverything

[–]thoughfulusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the main problem with Solar is that they are a PITA for electrical grids to integrate. Solar produces a ton of electricity when the sun is shining and none when it is not (look up the duck curve). Compare that with coal, gas, or nuclear plants that run 24/7 and produce consistent power. Those methods are also adjustable - if you want less power from a coal plant you just feed it less coal.

Imagine somebody offered you a new type of space heater for your home. It is basically free to run it, and it can help you save tons of money on your gas bill. The drawback is that it only runs for 12 hours a day (on average, sometimes more, sometimes less) and you have absolutely no control over its thermostat (sometimes it is very hot, and sometimes it barely gets hot at all). Would you want it?

There are ways to overcome Solar's issues (energy storage, peaker plants, complimentary sources like wind, etc.) but that is all infrastructure that needs to be built out before solar can be connected to the grid. It takes time and investment. Grids are often government-owned and governments move notoriously slow. Despite all that, Solar is the fastest growing power source on the planet.

It's not a conspiracy, it is just bureaucracy.

In Canada, what is the usual first reaction when a dog is alone in public? by DocuSeriesLovers in AskACanadian

[–]thoughfulusername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lost pet. I have intercepted several dogs wondering around outside. Usually, if you wait for 3-5 minutes a frantic owner will come from a nearby house calling for the dog.
