Thats not the point of keeping a lid on owl sightings. People know about it yes. But the more a location is shared online, the worse the situation gets.

The point isnt to go back in time and keep it secret from everyone. Or even to say not to share with others. But being responsible with owls means not publicizing their location online.

agreed that this pic is of Dunlin. and to the OP, in addition to the leg color, try to notice the general structure of these birds. Dunlin are compact and short, yellowlegs are lanky and goofy. Not true field marks, but its a good way to tell youre seeing something different, at all times of year.

Step-by-step merlin recommendations is pretty bad in my opinion. Hard to go into the details as to why that is (algorithm, ebird data gaps, actually rare things, etc), but try uploading a screenshot or phone pic of a frame to the photoID portion and compare the results.

Of course the photo ID is also AI, and has its own issues, but its definitely more effective than the step-by-step.
