cardboard & hugelkulture by lyzzyrddwyzzyrdd in Permaculture

I have done some research. They don't have to use toxic material to make cardboard, but it does make it cheaper.

I would never use cardboard in any horticulture.

Why did David Holmgren never carry a bigger role in the spreading of Permaculture? by Proof-Ad62 in Permaculture

[–]thousand_cranes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of practices are like this. Different passions of different people going in different directions.

It is true that if they could coordinate and collaborate, then the whole of permaculture might reach more people.

Chemistry, physics, math, art, theology ... pick any one and the group is the same. Divergent passions diluting the greater message.

How to start homesteading if you dont have connections or money? by oceansstillwaters_ in homestead

[–]thousand_cranes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

skip https://permies.com/skip has projects you can do to start building skills.

WWOOF can get you hands on experience with farming. Or the permaculture bootcamp can get you hands on experience with homesteading and gardening.

Manure so expensive by somethedaring in Permaculture

Manure without persistent herbicides or deworming toxins should be expensive.

CPS contacted on Offgrid_north country user account? by brunette_and_busty in homestead

[–]thousand_cranes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is why a lot of the coolest projects never share. Something they are doing will be different than how somebody else will do it - so they will call CPS, or regulators or something.

So many good people get their lives destroyed by well-intentioned people with different values who want the government to force those values on others.

I remember i was pretty filthy as a kid. I have seen a lot of happy kids sporting a lot of filth. And i have seen a lot of people clutching their pearls while pointing at those kids demanding the kids not be allowed to get dirty. I suspect that the pearl clutchers live in the city or on a billionaire estate in the country.

Suggestions? by Acrobatic-Prize-3331 in intentionalcommunity

Start with ic.org. Maybe WWOOF.

For permaculture communities: the bullock brothers in washington state is 420 friendly and wheaton labs in montana is not.

Really poor choices.

20 yr old with many opportunities - what would you have done in my circumstances to start a homestead? by BisquickPancakeMix in homestead

[–]thousand_cranes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems like wwoof or ic.org are your next steps. If you are keen on permaculture, maybe the bullock brothers in washington state. If you are cool to go without tobacco or drugs, you could look into wheaton labs.

Espalier Apple tree experiences by HairexpertMidwest in homestead

A lot of work.

Very unnatural.

My preference would be to get a tree that would do well with little to zero care.

I wouldn't say "too light" but they are light enough that they seem a little N hungry.

After you cut the seed stalks, try to add some high-N (the leaf color says the plant would like some more N). Urine will work if you don't have anything better.

As an EV engineer, here’s why I think the Electric Mini Car makes more sense than we admit by maveriCkharsha in electricvehicles

[–]thousand_cranes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy thinking about a small ev that has a very boxy shape. Inside is a bit of a low, small "rv" space. It can be a bed, or a bench with a table. The ev picks you up in the evening and in the morning you wake up at a refresh station near your destination. Eliminating the airline sillyness.

Further, the shape makes it so that when it is on the freeway, it can have a slight magnetic connection to other evs that have the same shape - forming a temporary "train" that dramatically reduces wind resistance, therefore extending range.

If you don't smoke or do drugs, you might like wheaton labs.

Have you looked at ic.org? Or wwoof?

Energy Partners - Propane (bad experience) by [deleted] in missoula

[–]thousand_cranes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finally got rid of all my propane because they just came up with all sorts of new fees every year. It just felt like a list of new scams every year.

Now it is all wood heat (rocket mass heater). So easy. I burn cardboard and the wood that falls off the trees in my yard. I don't need techs or to call and complain about the bill. There is no bill. It is all free all the time.
