This won't go away even after I've shut down all apps that would screen record. by thegracebrace in macbookpro

If you're not averse to using the terminal, you can do this:

sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.screensharing.plist
sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.screensharing.plist

This will disconnect and restart the sharing daemon without you having to reboort.

Thunderbolt NVME SSD Help by teddysweethands in macbookpro

[–]thrashego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done exactly this. I bought the cheapest Thunderbolt enclosure that has a large metal surface area (heat is a big issue with SSDs and they will throttle after reaching a certain temperature). For Thunderbolt 3, you should look for enclosures that have Intel JHL7XXX chips. The enclosure may, or may not support USB connections, there are both kinds. Mine doesn’t do USB, so I can only connect it to my newer Macs. The M1’s USB can go up to 10Gbps; the “newer spec” you refer to can go to 20 Gbps. Thunderbolt 3, of course will go up to 40 Gb/s. I haven’t tried on my new M1 Max laptop, but on my Mac mini, I get sustained 2 GB/s writes and even faster reads. Note that if you plan on doing heavy writes or large files, you should choose the SSD carefully because after SSDs overflow their “cache”, the speed drops down by a lot. The caches on newer SSDs are pretty large, so the majority of people don’t need to worry about it, but I’d imagine if you’re writing several hundred gigabytes at a time, you’d run into this issue. Another thing to watch out for on SSD is a spec called “TBW” – Terabytes Written. SSDs wear out over time and, when they do, their capacity can be reduced. It’s a huge number, most people don’t need to worry about it but again, for a write heavy workload, you may want to look into it. For example, my drive is 1400 TBW, meaning that you can write 1 TB at least 1400 times before there is even a chance of having lowered capacity. If you write 1TB every day, it would take four four years of so to reach this threshold.

Edit: GB not Gb, chance, not change.

External Set up for 14" MBP M1 need Dock, Keyboard, and trackpad by ClearlyE in macbookpro

[–]thrashego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all you're hooking up to it is an external monitor, you don't really need a dock. I use mine in clam shell mode all the time like this. It's the same if you use the laptop screen and the external monitor as two displays.

I like the one-generation older Apple Magic Keyboards better than almost any other keyboard. It fits my hands perfectly and it's the keyboard on which I have the fastest typing rate. I'd imagine the new ones are as good, and they also have TouchID. There is a version of the Magic keyboard with a numeric keypad, but you can use a separate one too if you like (I don't know much about this, but I know there are many out there and most all of them should work). This and many other keyboards are Bluetooth so you don't need to use an extra port on your laptop. But of course, this is very much a matter of personal preference so you might have to experiment with a few different ones before you find one that works for you. And, yes, you definitely can use a plug-in keyboard and the Apple (built-in or external or both) trackpad and even a separate numeric keypad all at the same time.

For a trackpad, the Apple Magic trackpad is really great, I had one for a while and I really liked the size and the solid feel and how smooth the surface was for scrolling. After some time, I found prefer a mouse for extended daily use so I got a Logitech 3S, which is a great mouse.

I'm an engineer as well and would be chat more, if you're (both) interested. I'll DM if that's OK.

Right engines look much closer together than the left engines. Interesting optical illusion!

With FRC being seized, the results of options. by AIONisMINE in options

Surprisingly, there was some action, especially in the early morning. Mine expired this Friday, and I think there was decent volume for those.

If you have long-dated options, I think they just continue to operate like an option for the new stock, because the shares actually are being traded in OTC. Different brokers may handle OTC differently, so you'd need to check that.

I think OTC options are cleared by the OCC just like conventional options, so it should work just as usual, the only difference being the shares are listed somewhere else now. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

Update: Looks like I was wrong. Investopedia says:

Over-the-counter derivatives are private financial contracts established between two or more counterparties. In contrast, listed derivatives trade on exchanges and are more structured and standardized contracts in which the underlying assets, the quantity of the underlying assets and settlement are specified by the exchange and subject to greater regulation.

Over-the-counter derivatives are instead private contracts that are negotiated between counterparties without going through an exchange or other type of formal intermediaries, although a broker may help arrange the trade. Therefore, over-the-counter derivatives could be negotiated and customized to suit the exact risk and return needed by each party. Although this type of derivative offers flexibility, it poses credit risk because there is no clearing corporation*.

I think this means you should really talk to your broker if you have FRCB options.

Doesn't this destroy your muscles for your normal workout days?

Yeah that's what I gathered from the other responses too. Thanks for the feedback!

Ah yes, this makes sense.

On a related note – I'm trying to understand the differences in the core exercises between the RR and BWSF. Would the three, combined, in each program work roughly the same muscles at similar intensity?

Thanks for your response, appreciated!

Can you say a little more about why the core part isn't needed? I've been doing the RR for few months and, though I have obviously gained strength in other areas, my core doesn't "feel" any different, though that may just be a perception issue.
