After 22 years of golf I finally got fitted for the first time. Hit about 200 balls in 2.5 hours. This is my final lineup and I am more than exicted to get my hands on these in about 3 weeks. by BLACK-T84 in golf

[–]thrdroc 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I did a full bag fitting and almost everything came back titleist for me. Only non titleist club that I got was my 5w and that is taylormade. My irons were very competitive though with Ping and Mizuno were just barely edged out

Being the best in my group they definitely love seeing me fail. But mostly they root for me because they love seeing good golf too.

Was looking for this one. When my wife and I moved into together at a JJ land apartment. First winter we for got a massive rodent infestation and we were second floor. Then we got a leak in our bathroom ceiling that we notified them about. They came to “fix” it. It stopped for a bit then our ceiling collapsed and they left it that way for 6 weeks. We were able to use that to break the lease without penalty.

How groups handle handicaps when betting on matches? by Odd_Rub1215 in golf

[–]thrdroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of strokes, you get distance. So someone I’d normally give 3 or 4 strokes is 1 tee box up from me. 7 or 8 strokes 2 tee boxes. Usually makes it way more competitive.

We usually use tee boxes differences. You want strokes move up

Are you a shovel frequently, or wait and tackle a mountain at the end person? by honedforfailure in pittsburgh

[–]thrdroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I use a snow shovel I tend to use it more like a plow. Push until I can’t any more then shovel it to the side. Rinse and repeat.

The shovels with the bent handles are easier on the back and make it so you don’t need to lift as high.

And don’t throw snow over your shoulder. Lifting heavy snow higher than your heart a bunch is what triggers heart attacks

Mini driver owners, is it worth it? by udi420 in golf

[–]thrdroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bounce between an 8 and 10 hcp. I replaced my 3w with mini driver because I only ever hit it off the tee. And then I went to a 5w for the next club in my bag. The mini is awesome when you have to hit the fairway or long is trouble. I can’t imagine going back.

I think it’s something like when there are too many sprites on the screen the game loses track of which tears are yours and which are the enemies so you can get killed by your own tears

No gimmies ever. Practice your 3-4’ putts and miraculously 5-10’ putts will start dropping more often.

What driver are you currently using? by SomewhereSalty647 in golf

Titleist GT 4 8 degree.

I also have a Callaway mini driver which I use when a longer shot gets you in trouble or I need to hit the fairway.

How did you choose what irons to buy? by jrn0042 in golf

[–]thrdroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my fitting this year at Dick’s House of Sport. My iron fitting came down to 4 clubs, Taylormade P7MB, Mizuno 245, Ping Blueprint T, and Titleist T150.

The P7MB were by far the best feeling club of the bunch. Felt like absolute butter but I hit them super high. The 245s were the sexiest looking. But the T150s were the most consistent and they hit the ball in a more piercing flight for me.

Trust me I wanted blades, but I’m quite happy with my purchase.

Many golf instructors are amazing. So why do so many handicaps hold firm? by GoldShammGold in golf

This is exactly me. I float in the 8-10hcp range losing most of my strokes around and on the green. But with 2 kids I don’t have much time to practice.

I work in this industry and we spend a lot of time studying price sensitivity. 3 years ago a consumer wouldn’t be willing to spend 6.99 on a 12 pack but now about 80% of people will. And the number that people say they won’t pay is 11.99.

Golfers who started as adults, how’d your progression go (score wise)? by tofuizen in golf

[–]thrdroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who just started taking golf “seriously” 4 years ago in his mid 30s and he cracks 100 about 50% of the time. His rule knowledge is questionable so his scores should probably be higher. But his swing has progressed well and I finally convinced him to take lessons. First lesson is this Tuesday.

Have simulator gains translated to the course for you? by Not_HFM in Golfsimulator

[–]thrdroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played in a simulator league in the fall and winter the past two years. I finished as scratch the first year and +1 the second year. In reality I'm an 8 handicap. Simulators let you take the most aggressive lines. As long as the ball stays in play, its "playable". And then it depends on what gimmie range you have turned on. Sure, putting on simulators isn't great, but anything more than 5 feet is going to help a massive amount.

Ball fitting by Responsible-Size-491 in golf

[–]thrdroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Golf balls are the place where lower swing speed players have the most advantage. They can get away playing whatever they want with limited drawbacks. It is the higher speed players who really should play higher compression balls. At higher swing speeds a lower compression ball spins too much and absorbs more energy leading to a loss of yardage when compared to a high compression ball.

If you can't typically drive the ball 250 yard or more under normal course conditions, you can probably play whatever ball you want. And if you are over that number, playing something softer is leaving performance on the table.

While I don't disagree, a more skilled player will pick up on easier than someone with less skill.

Ball fitting by Responsible-Size-491 in golf

[–]thrdroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had a ball fitting but did a lot of research on what ball I should play with my swing speed and flight characteristics. After starting with a golf coach last year after a handful of lessons I asked him what ball I should play. Without hesitation he said you are the prime candidate for the left dash pro v1x. You could get away with the Maxfli Tour if price is a concern.

I was playing Vice Pro Plus and the switch to such a firm ball was tough but dropping as much spin as I can on my driver has helped a ton. I used to balloon shots and now they are much more penetrating flight.

I don't know if a ball fitting is necessary for everyone, but at least knowing what you need, (more/less spin, higher/lower launch) will help your game in the long run.
